While we're on cars, if you were a manufacturer . With the chip shortage having gotten us this far into the year, would you attempt to produce anymore 2021's or just wait a few more weeks and call everything a 2022 ? I'd wait but their cash flows might demand otherwise.

If it were me, anything new off the line would be a 2022. Everything made to date and just waiting on chips would be 2021's. And since the backlog is projected to take until 2023 to clear, i'd rush the 2023's too...

I didn’t bump it; I was providing an update with new information on the original purpose of the thread (which had been a pretty popular thread when first started based on the fact that it had 100+ replies). Bumping is when you make a new post with no new comments or information just to bring it back to the first page.

I am in the market for a new car that’s being discontinued after 2021, and it’s been hell to find what I want. I’ve dealt with dealers from Baton Rouge to Charlotte. Supposedly the local dealer is going to work a dealer swap with a car that’s going to be delivered to a dealership in Arkansas. But I’m not sure I’ll really believe it until it’s done. If the car wasn’t going to be discontinued, no way I’d be in the market right now.

Serious question concerning the Tesla. You bought a 4+ year old car. How long does the batteries in a Tesla last? I assume they degrade a certain percentage per year until they essentially become unserviceable. How much will it cost to replace the batteries and how much to dispose of the old batteries?

From what I can tell, real world data is looking really good. Only 10% average degradation after 160,000 miles. His car should be warrantied for 8 years unlimited mileage.

I think I read somewhere else that the Tesla warranty is 120,000 miles (pro-rated, I’m sure). Finally, in another article, I seem to remember that it estimated replacement cost to be in the neighborhood of about $4,000-$5,000. I don’t know about disposal issues - I suppose that would be on Tesla but my understanding is that a lot of the material is recyclable.

Don’t hold me to any of that - I’ve been researching Teslas for a long time.

Useable battery life is over 500,000 miles. (Useable battery life is defined as 80% of the original capacity) You have the remainder of an 8 year unlimited mile warranty. ( newer cars are limited to 120,000 and it's not pro-rated)

Add in that the battery replacement cost is and has been decreasing.

Tesla Recycles the batteries to make new ones. They don't pay you for them, but as of now, they don't make you pay for disposal either.

Has anybody bought or driven a Jeep 4xe hybrid? I skipped out this year and bought the V6 for a number of reasons, but I could see trading for a 4xe in a couple of years if the technology proves reliable. I drive 3 miles a day unless I feel like getting out so most of my daily driving would be all electric. The HP and torque stats are legit too.

A wise person would put off buying any vehicle if all possible for at least another year. Side note: I believe the last stimulus bill set aside billions for someone or company that was willing to start a new company and build a new plant for the chips. Something along those lines. I remember reading it somewhere. This is what happens when you out source to other countries.

The shortages in chips for cars is not about outsourcing. It's about poor planning from the automakers. In Q2 of 2020 the auto manufacturers cancelled all of their orders with chip suppliers thinking they wouldn't sell any cars.

The chip manufacturers were happy to shift that production over to electronics that are higher margin. Now autos are in the back of the line. That would have happened if the fabs were here or anywhere.

Toyota has destroyed everyone else this year because after the tsunami in 2011, they started a plan to keep several months of critical components in inventory (like chips.) In Q2, Toyota topped all other manufacturers in US new vehicle sales. It was the first time since 1998 GM wasn't number 1.

If the auto manufacturers had planned better, it would still be tight, but hundreds of thousands of vehicles would not be sitting around near factories waiting for chips.

It's the same problem lumber faced, everyone likes to blame lumber mills for high prices and shortages, when in reality, 2020 lumber production in North America was 1% higher than 2019. It was the poor planning by lumberyards, dealers, and distributors that caused the lunacy we saw earlier this year.
