If he whiffs on this it will be the start of the end for him IMHO. He already missed on a ton of difference makers. We don’t have quite enough yet to really make a run IMHO. This whiff and another mediocre season and it’s over with his terrible recruiting record. This is huge for him and our season for sure.
It’s bigger than the Stokes thing. Getting MM erases that, IMO, because he’s a much better fit for this team than Stokes ever was. If he whiffs here, when literally everyone is just assuming that MM signs with UK, then that’s it.

Well, you started with "you dont seem to be well-rounded or well-informed" so the personal attack part is out the door.

I included May because its a hot name right now. It very well could be an upcoming coach, like an Otzelberger. Heck, it could even be something that *could* swing a Billy D or other NBA coaches, especially as college basketball slowly becomes a pro sports anyways, where a guy like Mike Malone starts to makes more sense.

Im very aware that UK is not positioned well in this NIL era. Lets be honest, its a middling state school in one of the poorest US states. There isnt a whole lot of "FU" money going around. Ive said as much for months.

That said, this is also an era where the programs have to WANT to spend what Kentucky is willing to spend. Duke and Michigan looks like they will. SJU (after Pitino), Texas, TTU? Im not so sure.

My point in all this is that we dont know how far this money will go that Pope is getting. And if the product he puts on the floor is garbage, than revenue is lost, so is interest. So I'm not entirely "in love" with giving Pope a $4mil hail mary, just to still be a 13 loss team.. or worse win enough to warrant year 4.
I reread my post today and, admittedly, yeah it seems a little snarky. I apologize for that.

Cal missed after that era, BEFORE NIL. Picking one successful era and acting like that is the history of UK is just wrong. Even the coach who created that era could not sustain it.

Recruiting today is nothing like it was before the portal and NIL. In fact, the word “recruiting” is not even appropriate for what happens in the portal. As mentioned on Leach’s show this morning, if you have a roster budget of $2 million for a guy like Freeman and then someone offers him $3 million, do you just throw an additional million at him? It’s a new world and a bunch of posters here, including you apparently, are stuck in the past trying to compare apples to oranges.

Your posting on Pope is inconsistent, as pointed out by others. Don’t give him a the money, as if there is some banking the money for the next coach, but expect him to win as if he had the money? It’s absurd. Do you want the Cats to win or do you want to claim you were right when Pope fails because we accepted your plan?

Cal still PROVED he was able to do what was needed to win with this program, whether it was recruiting, adjustments, motivation etc. He may have lost it (or just gave up), but he still proved he had a fast ball. Pope has not yet. It's not like Cal was getting $4 mil to go get recruits. Now granted, like you said, different era.. there was no buying players (at least not out in the open), but he still created a model that drew recruits in. Pope, with all that Kentucky is, the facilities, tons of NIL money, he STILL is struggling to draw in players. So now he wants $4mil for a 2nd-round caliber player? I don't know how I feel about that. I don't think he's proved he's the right guy for this job, and money is still finite. We've already heard donors are now skeptical of banking the Pope era and the money isnt flowing in as much as it was.

I think Pope is ultimately gone this time next year. Mom and this roster MAY save him one more year, but IMO he's not the right guy for the job from what I have seen, to date. So I don't want Kentucky to lose.. but I don't want them to waste resources so Pope can maybe buy himself more time.

I honestly think the most important goal next year is to really figure out what we are doing with Pope, more than winning. I know that sounds crazy, but we need to decide if this is the guy for the job or he isn't and move on. If kept BCG for one more year, we'd have never gotten Cal.

Truthfully it's fine. I don't care. I get snarky here, too. It was more of a "don't piss on my feet and tell me it's raining" kind of thing.

I think we all want the same thing here, for Kentucky to win games. Maybe I'm just a little more "out" on Pope than this board is.. but it sure feels like people are buying back in, forgetting what last year looked like. So I question if spending MORE millions than we already are, is the best idea for a coach who I think is gone in a year.

Fair.

Im not as out on Pope IF he can land Momcilovic. I think it would be a perfect lineup for Pope.

If he doesn’t land Momcilovic, yeah I think he’s as good as done here.

It does seem like Mom would be a big get. I liked that we got MM back. We seem to have a top25ish roster. I'm just very unclear on what Pope can do with that roster. Ideally, he kills it and proves last year was just a bad year, filled with injuries and just piss-poor player talents/mentalities.

I’m 100% with you. People are reading way too much into who follows who etc. some of our guys followed other recruits we didn’t get and still follow them. That’s deep in the tea leaves IMO. This isn’t middle school drama, it’s multi million dollar contracts.
So is the deal done or not? Not trolling, but you have said "it's done", most of the smoke agrees with that. But "done" is a definite vs your wording here where it's more a "feeling".

Not disagreeing at all. But we've heard from a self proclaimed "donor that knows all the big donors" right here on this very site that Pope has a blank check and infinite money. I wonder which is truly the case.

JQ 25 or whatever just said it could be announced within the hour that Milan is fulfilling past contracts and they are waiting on him to make the announcement.
I heard his call into KSR too. I checked MM's Instagram and he in fact posted some kind of advertisement or something an hour or so ago. So it does make some sense that he hasn't committed yet if he still has contractual obligations to fill.

I'm still a bit pessimistic about this whole thing so we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully something happens today.

I’m not disagreeing with you , but Pope has had just as much or more money than most every other school, and he’s still missing on pretty much all of the top players. Hopefully Momcilovic is going to fall to us, but had just one first round team gave him a contract, he would’ve stayed in the draft.

I agree it’s a different situation now and it’s pretty much buying guys by the year, but something isn’t working for us and we can’t continue getting beat for every single player we actually want. I want Mark to kill it here, for him and for us, but we have to get some top players if everyone is going to keep throwing money to the program.

I just want him to figure it out, but time is precious as the head man of Kentucky Basketball. Maybe the University should hire a real GM or a President of Basketball Operations over everything except coaching. I could be way off here, but I really want Mark to be great here and win big , he’s got to get these players first. Thanks Beatle.

I hear you. Everyone follows every one. It is weird with them unfollowing now though. I’m sure it’s nothing.

Let’s hope so. I have such a love/hate relationship with these type posts. On the One hand it’s so exciting thinking about getting him and having some news. On the other hand, if we don’t get him soon it feels like things are trending bad again.

The $6 million question remains… If UK has been “leading” this whole time, what is Momcilovic waiting for, for the race to be over?

You know, the race UK has apparently been leading the entire time?

I’ve seen this “leading” BS too many times to fall for the “Banana in the Tailpipe” trick again, by these grease ball agents!

I am only going to follow for a couple more hours. If a deal isn't reach by midday, then it will not be.

If we’re paying 7 million for a forward that was a 2nd round pick then you can’t turn around and tell me UK isn’t going to be able to recruit a great coach with a competent AD. I mean those are two completely hypocritical points. If Pope sputters out this year there just isn’t a reason for us to not be able to get an elite coach.

I really think Billy D would seriously consider the Kentucky job because his career started here. Look I hope Pope works out but there are major red flags everywhere.

I would lose my mind and make everyone around me uncomfortable if ole Eddie Munster was pacing our sidelines. It’s a BJW dream of mine, and like Andy Dufresne hope for me is there even though extremely unlikely.

That money would be better served going to Pope's buyout
