So, primary care clinics finally get their vaccines and they begin scheduling appointments this week. After 2 days, they say all appointments are now canceled and the state is taking over the vaccination efforts since the state feels they can do it much faster - their vaccine doses are being pulled back to the state. They're not accepting any more appointments. If you try to log onto the state's link (as they've instructed on every news media outlet) to schedule your appointment, it continually crashes showing 5000-7000 people waiting in queue. The telephone number, yeah - forget that. THEN yesterday afternoon the state says "we're out of vaccines....". Tate even made an announcement on Tuesday that they were stepping it up. 24 hours later, the Dept of Health says they're out of vaccines and don't expect anymore until "mid-February" and therefore they're not accepting any new appointments. How in the hell does that happen?

It happened because they were under pressure to open them up to more people than they had vaccine doses for. They did it and running out was the inevitable result. They had a carefully worked out plan and it was cast aside over a 24 hour period. That reeks of political interference. The fact is is that there is not enough of it for everyone and won't be till well into the summer if then. The original plan took into account the number of doses they had and expected to have at any one time. This non-plan does not.

Greetings, asshats. Mark your calendars for mid-April as your start date to check vaccine availability, vaccination locations, and scheduling and plan on a May date for first dosage. You're wearing yourself out expecting this to operate smoothly. May. Maybe. Prepare to be further disappointed.

But how does the Governor say on Tuesday "we're ramping it up" and then on Wednesday the Health Dept say "we've run out". Clearly you never had what you needed to even get going. It just sounds like he had no idea what the inventory was when he made that announcement. Seems the announcement should have been "we're nearly out of the vaccines and we're working to get more. Until then, see your primary care provider who has a limited supply....". And the people who had appointments scheduled are now back to zero having to start over scheduling an appointment that they're now being told will be mid February IF THEY CAN EVEN GET THROUGH ON THE WEBSITE. And what about those who were vaccinated earlier this week who will be due another dose in 21 days? We won't have another delivery until mid February. I just dont' understand how you fail on so many fronts.

To this point it has not been obvious to the masses, but there is wholesale trench warfare between the governor's staffers/advisors and the people that operate the state health dept. This fiasco is the direct result of a simmering and seething hatred between Guv office advisors and bureaucrats at MSDH. Very, very hard for the factions to work together.

Not sure why anyone cares. You've survived this long. Just hold out for a few more months.

I'm just hoping football season is semi-normal.

They did ramp up the number of appointments scheduled. And it "worked", as they were quickly able to schedule a use of every single vaccine available.

Basically a lot of bureaucrats have a carefully designed list prioritizing who would get vaccines in what order in an ideal world. The people that designed the list didn't properly take into account that fact that a lot of people they wanted to prioritize wouldn't be interested in the vaccine and just that it would take extra time to try to so tightly control the order in which people get vaccinated. The people following the distribution plan closely are having vaccines expire before they get used. We clearly decided we did not want that to happen, and probably erred by going to far in the other direction. No vaccines will be wasted in MS, but we probably will have a good number of people that ideally would have gotten the vaccine have to wait while a good number of people that are probably relatively low risk will have gotten the vaccine. Not ideal, but probably a lot better than having vaccines spoil because we're so worried about what order it is given in, so hard to complain too much. Certainly has been frustrating for some vulnerable people that want the vaccine.

I'm worried about those who need it. A LOT of at risk elderly were scheduled for vaccines next week and suddenly their appointments were canceled.

They can't isolate just a little bit longer? It's not like they haven't learned to do that for nearly a year now.

The state also received less vaccines than originally planned. The hospitals could only order Vaccines if 100% of their providers were on board with it...the "ideal world" portion. Not all providers would get on board, therefore, only about 50% of the hospitals actually put an order in. Granted, I'm talking about the initial rollout...I imagine it's only snowballed from there.
I would lay the blame on the MSDH wanting to micromanage the ENTIRE situation and refusing to operate in anything other than an ideal scenario. Some things either just 1) can't be done or 2)could/need to be done in a different way.

I have a good friend in government technology sales - he tried to get MSDH and the State of MS to use his platform. Didn't give him the time of day, said their system was adequate. He told me this would be a **** show with their current site. But why would they take the time to change....

Haven't had to deal with MSDH, but I am entirely over government bureaucrats thinking they should set policy. Run for 17ing office if you want to set policy, otherwise give your advice and if it's ignored, do your 17ing job. If you disagree too much to implement policy, then 17ing resign and criticize the elected officials. It's really not hard. Don't sit there and obstruct policy and send out passive aggressive bitchy email updates about changes to the policy.

Guaranteed msdh has no budgeted operating funds available for that type of technology upgrade. And no room in other budgeted line items to maneuver that expense. And no hope of any sort of emergency appropriation under the current administration. Not likely the decision to stiff your guy had anything to do with the necessity or quality of the tech upgrade.

Remember you heard this on SPS first. The way this is going I would bet the next CF is that they've "over booked" and don't have enough vaccines for the people they've signed up.

What about the millions of dollars of Cares funds that we got that had to be spent before 12/15/20 and HAD TO BE SPENT ON COIVD RELEIF? Could we not use that?

Every bit of this shitshow goes back to last March/April. Skinny Jeans was demanding Stalinist-level centralized shut-downs. Buster Brown and his troupe of anti-government baboons started amassing baboon **** piles. It went sort-of-public. The 4.5 inch dick won the battle over the 4 inch dick. The current environment is pretty much a DMZ between north and south.

Ask yourself who went to the Supreme Court to wrest control over access to those funds?

I believe that 1000%. Plus some of those who are due a second dose, won't get it. Watch and see.

All i know is that various state agencies got a HUGE share of that money. I know that for a fact because i was involved with 2 agencies in how some of it was to be spent. I can only assume that MDH got some as well. So what did they do with it?

Time for my Wurlitzer story. After I got released from the Astros I had to get a real job. Wurlizter in Holly Springs was hiring so I applied and got a job on the factory floor. My first job there was on the assembly line for their spinet pianos. My daily quota for the tasks I did to each piano was 120 pianos. One day it hit me after a month or so, how do they sell this many pianos? A piano is not something that is in every home. Most people that do buy pianos buys 1 or 2 in their lifetime. I understand that spinets can be purchased in bulk for schools to have 10 or 20 for piano classes. (But even in 1985 many of those were electric pianos). So here I am working for one company, one one model, in one factory and somehow it is economically feasible for 120 of these things to go by me every day.

According to the internet in 1985 there were 4.8 billion people worldwide (237 million in US). Now there are 7.8 billion worldwide (331 million in US). So manufacturing that many vaccines takes time that is hard to realize.

For what it's worth, UMMC did do a very carefully worded press release late yesterday in response to this fiasco. It's clear they're laying the blame elsewhere (not with MDH). They made a point to be very clear that they found about the change after the fact and their system was never meant to handle that kind of internet traffic- they were caught off guard. They also pointed out the fact that MDH had a plan and that plan was significantly changed and they stressed that it happened in the last 24 hours. Again, they're carefully illustrating that someone else is responsible for the mess.

MSDH bureaucrats cannot win a politics game. This is now a politics game. The blame will always rest with the nameless bureaucrats. Tate got tons of calls asking why this is moving so slowly. His people advised him to force the issue knowing that MSDH would get blamed. In the short term, it will work with his core constituency. Long term, it remains to be seen. He has roughly 2 years for the unwashed voters to forget his part in this easily-predictable government-run failure.

If you look at the vaccine appointment website after say 10-11PM. They add appointments that become available from the previous day or days. I'm guessing it's from no shows. Last night at 11:00 and later you could have set up and appt at pretty much any drive thru site in the state. Most drive thru sites had between 50-150 open spots.

So, is Ms the only state running out of vaccines? One day they are saying that a large percentage of eligible people are opting out of getting the vaccine. A few days later we are out.

So, i just read Dr Dobb's comments to Senate Public Health hearing that was held this week. He said we've only completed 3700 vaccines of nursing home patients which he admitted was an extremely poor effort. By comparison, he said Louisiana and Alabama had completed 5 times as many. He said we entered a contract with CVS and Walgreens and quote "I'm just not sure why" everyone else is outpacing us..... A spokesman for CVS when asked, says that the vaccines must be administered by their employees. She further stated they're understaffed here but they aren't in neighboring states. CVS actually has the vaccine doses and they said the only workaround is for our nursing homes to disenroll in the program in which case the vaccines get sent back to the Dept of Health, but that she "doesn't recommend that......". So,we jsut wait. What a damn fiasco.

You have to ask yourself this question: given that CVS and Walgreens have common staffing, training, and logistical systems across their interstate regions, and it is demonstrated that they have delivered in every state where they are located, except one, what factor could cause Walgreen/CVS failure in that one state only? What is it about that one state that is different? My guess would be that one state's governmental bureaucracy/ineptitude.

Amen. This idea that we need MORE government involvement to get the vax out never made sense to me. Our pharm companies seem pretty adept at delivering and administering things that make them money. Our government seems pretty adept at...hold on I'm thinking...wait it's coming to me...um...inefficiency!

This has been a CF. They should have never lowered the 75 age cut off until at least mid-February. I feel a little embarrassed in that I have an appointment tomorrow and I'm not 75. But I made the appointment based on the rules at the moment so I'm going. Hopefully I don't arrive to an empty parking lot.
