It's all relative, and only you know the value of your time. But if we want to sell it quickly, instead of sacrificing $800, why not be willing to accept $200 below private party? If you are valuing your car's condition honestly, you'd probably get a buyer quickly, perhaps with just an hour of time and effort on your part. Post an ad on craigslist, auto-trader, edmunds, etc. then meet with potential buyers. Even if that takes you 2 hours, it would still be like getting paid $300 per hour.

And if a buyer likes it at the Edmunds value, and agrees to buy it in the first hour, you just got paid $800 per hour.

All you have to do to "decouple" is tell the dealer you will not discuss a trade-in until you have agreed on a deal for the new vehicle. They'll probably try to convince you they can offer you a better deal if you don't, BS of course, but if you are firm and tell them your time is valuable and you simply won't negotiate with them any other way, you should be fine. Hell, were it me, I might tell them I had an appointment later that day to talk to a competing dealer, so really have a hard deadline with them.

Dealers know if you leave their lot, the chances of you ever coming back to buy a car from them drop exponentially.

That said, you should get more money selling your old car private party.

Ordered the book yesterday. Looking forward to reading it. Wife has been dropping subtle hints that she is ready for a new ride so we will see how much I can save after reading the book.I don't know why she wants a new one, her 97 model only has 43000 miles on it.
Good luck. Hope it serves you well as it did me. Would enjoy getting an update from you after you've read it, and after you've gone to the dealerships. Very interested in hearing if they're still playing some of the same old games.

It's not the value of my time (although that's part of it), it's the value of not having to deal with crazy people. I have sold used **** and then had people call me when something breaks down after they take possession. Not a huge deal, but I worry about getting a crazy that does more than just call because they they are upset it broke not long after them buying.

There’s plenty of Bulldogs that work for Cannon. I know several and it’s who I bought my wife’s Armada from in Oxford. The other dealers around here couldn’t beat their price or the trade in.
