Coach Lou is happy that his former star pupil, RB David Montgomery, is now a Chicago Bear. Great pick!

Fant is a great athlete, but his blocking is suspect, and if your going to be a TE at Iowa you'd better be able to block. This is why Hockenson went higher because he is a complete TE kind of in the mold of George Kittle who is with the 49ers now. Fant did not play as many snaps because Hock and the other TE they had were much better blockers. For me, I would have kept Fant on the field and just split him out and let his 4.5 speed take a LB out of the middle when running the ball. You can't teach 4.5 speed to most TE's. LOL
I can't believe I didn't realize until tonight that Hockenson is from the same small town in Iowa (pop. 4,000) where I was born and all my kin on one side lived.

On the other hand, if you were enamored with a running back who was thought to be a solid inside runner although maybe a bit undersized and the big knock was a perceived lack of top end speed I say Justin Jackson would have been a better pick last year.

Totally agree. The challenge is knowing when the player you are trading to get is transformational enough over the player you could otherwise have gotten/will play in the position to merit the cost. Aaron Donald is obviously that kind of transformational difference maker. The jury is still out on Mitch. And I don't think most talent evaluators have the kind of certainty about their convictions in projecting talent that we might hope.

Point taken. See Miami Dolphins. Dion Jordan. Oy.

4 QBs off the board so far after 3 rounds. Doesn't seem like a lot. Wonder if Clayton gets pushed down to 6th round.

Well I have to disagree pretty much across the board. Jones single handedly beat us two years in a row surrounded by a team with otherwise mediocre talent. He is accurate and mobile, the two most important traits for a QB in modern day football. Same goes for Trubisky, who by the way made a pro bowl and only showed a fraction of the talent that will be on full display next year. The draft that supposedly would get Ryan Pace fired has already generated three bowlers while the guy who supposedly “fleeced” Pace, John Lynch, has already released one of his two first round picks from that year, is reportedly looking to trade the other and pretty much has only 1 NFL player to show for the haul of picks he got from the Bears.
There have been so many articles panning the Daniel Jones pick that I thought I’d simply share one of the more fun ones. The video of the live reaction of all the Giants fans is particularly telling - they’re not always right of course but a whole stadium booing their new franchise QB. The best case for Jones is to pull a Rodgers and sit behind Manning for another season or two and do his best to adapt, although he’s not nearly as talented as Rodgers.

I read that Manning actually had better stats in the NFL than Jones had at Duke last season, although he was injured in our game - still, a rare feat as everyone thinks Manning is washed. And even though he played great against us, our team came out flat as a pancake against them for some reason for the last two years.

If I were a NFL GM, I’d be much happier with drafting Thorson in a later round than Jones at 6 overall. I hope Thorson similarly gets to learn the game before an established pro and get used to the NFL speed... and having NFL linemen and receivers.

2006, you'll find yourself quite pleased with Trubisky this fall. Write that down - and you don't need to use pencil.
As a casual Bears fan I hope you’re right, and he really showed poise and leadership on that final drive to put the Bears in position to win the playoff game.

But I’m not holding my breath after watching Goff, another system QB, get dismantled by the Patriots in the SB. We shall see.

Zach Allen, former NU DE commit who decommitted and went to BC, goes before any NU player. Frustrating on multiple levels...
No thanks, but I'd like us to stop losing recruiting battles to them for top talent. Two players drafted in the first 65 picks... two guys who would have helped us in our talent gap vs the Buckeyes in Indy.
Regarding Allen: he has a very similar skill set to Gaz, and his decommitment opened up the scholarship for Hartage. It sucks to lose a NFL defensive lineman, but I’ve been very happy with Gaz and Hartage the past few seasons.

The other player you’re referring to is their OL that was drafted in the first round, correct? Given that his father and uncle both played at BC, and his brother currently does too... well I have a hunch he was always going to be an Golden Eagle.

And I’d much rather see these players end up at BC, and not at Ped State or another Big Ten team.

Agreed. But in this particular case it worked out ok for NU as we got Hartage with Allen's vacated spot, filling a position of greater need for us.

At #67, the Niners took Jalen Hurd. He's a TE coming out of Baylor, but was a RB at Tennessee last bowl meeting, one that NU fans would like to forget. Good move by him to become a TE, cause he'd never make it at RB in the pros. Looks ready.

But after the first round, everybody is guessing...

I think he’s actually a WR, but he looked like more of a hybrid in his highlights. The 49ers should borrow the superback role to best accommodate him.

His back-up in that bowl game was Alvin Kamara. Thankfully those coaches didn’t move him to WR earlier - which he requested - or that game might have been even worse than it was.

Some giant Danish guy who played OG at Arkansas goes to Pats. That’s quite a journey.

Patriots have 2 more picks left in the 4th round. Will they pluck Thorson?

Maybe the Packers will take him in the fifth round, they've had good luck with NU players recently.

Man... 7 Buckeyes drafted in first 4 rounds and we have 0 so far. As great as our program is going, the talent gap is still HUGE.

Yes but the new facilities will make a difference over time.

OSU’s facilities were light years ahead of NU’s during my unofficial visits in the early 2000s. I mean it was really like two different worlds. OSU invested a ton in their indoor football facilities around the turn of the century and it clearly showed back then, resulting in the 2002 national championship and an overall higher level of sustained success. Whereas NU was until recently still practicing on the same crappy astroturf field... for over two decades.

Now that NU has built it... we’ve seen signs that the recruits will come. </Field of Dreams>

ESPN shows the Buffalo kid still ahead of Thor
That Buffalo guy is a physical specimen, and I’m surprised he wasn’t drafted already due to all the hype (some mocks had him as a first or second rounder).

More importantly, Thorson is now in Kiper’s Top 10 available. While I’m not a big fan of any ESPN draft analysts, that indicates he’ll come off the board soon and hopefully land in a low-pressure backup situation at one of the “good franchises”.

That was pretty obvious in Indy...
Indy was a combination of talent and depth gap, we had so many guys out especially on D. Same with ND and Michigan games. We need both more top end talent and more depth of at least the quality of our current top end. Otherwise we were unable to close the gap against the very top tier.

Though if we would've started Bowser against Michigan, I think we would've won the possession battle and would've held them off to win.

4 from Wisky. Shows how much we get from "lesser" talent. Bummer for Clayton...6th round?
Bummer for him, but are you really that surprised? I like him and think he's a winner. From my hometown, if from the wrong side of the tracks. But he's thrown a lot of picks and decision-making has been open to question. Certainly good enough to develop into a player in the league, but as an early round pick? I wasn't holding my breath. I thought JJTBC was a better midround risk last year.
