As the Trump administration plays tough about a migrant caravan purportedly heading toward the U.S.-Mexico border, former GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene exposed the truth: The GOP frequently uses these stories to rile up voters before elections.
On Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security
posted a montage of former Philadelphia Eagles safety Brian Dawkins tackling other players in response to a post alleging a “huge migrant caravan headed towards the US southern border.”
The DHS account also
posted a photo of Dawkins captioned, “The border is closed.”
In response, the NFL
requested DHS to remove the video.
“We have not seen a caravan headed to the U.S. southern border in several years, why now?” Greene
wrote on X. “Oh yeah, there is an election coming and the GOP needs to scare you into voting because nothing else is working.”
Greene was once a major promoter of these bigoted ideas and policies, but she has since had a
major public break with Trump and the MAGA movement.
For years, Republicans have
promoted reports of “caravans”—and conveniently made those claims in election years.
With a major push from Fox News, the right
clung to the caravan storyline in 2018, just a few weeks before Democrats took control of the House in the midterm elections.
The GOP also
pushed these stories in 2022 in an attempt to undercut the Biden administration.
