From B.O. article on the mass migration going on across the pond:

Spain is getting what it deserves, but that didn’t help the 60 human beings who died trying to illegally enter Spain from Morocco last week. We’ve seen the harrowing video as approximately 60,000 migrants overran Spanish authorities near Gibraltar, trying desperately to leave the third world.

Morocco is a dictatorship run by King Mohammed VI. He calls all the shots and had to know there were tens of thousands of migrants massing to leave his country. The Moroccan Army stood by and did nothing to break up the party.

The King is a tough guy who has kept control over the jihadists. Now, he claims 48,000 of the 60,000 have been repatriated back to Morocco in one day.

Count me skeptical.

What is true is that the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, granted full amnesty to Spanish migrants earlier this year. Those folks often use Morocco as a transit point north causing major economic problems for the King.

Payback?

The Spanish army and police are tasked with rounding up the latest wave of humanity but don’t expect them to try very hard. Sanchez has embraced immigration chaos, and everybody knows it. Joe Biden must have a warm feeling.

The European Union is mad at Spain because once the Sanchez amnesty kicked in, the migrant newcomers could travel anywhere in Europe with no credentials needed. Just what most European countries need, right?

President Trump is down on Spain because it’s the only NATO country not paying its full share of dues. In addition, Sanchez would not allow US warplanes to refuel in Spain on their way to Iran and the Middle East.

Spain did win the World Cup but, today, it’s getting its behind kicked all over the place.

Here’s what I would do. If Spain wants socialism, fine. But the USA doesn’t have to trade with the country. I would also suspend Spain’s NATO presence until it pays up.

Pedro Sanchez is not our amigo or anyone else’s.

Finally, I am wondering what Pope Leo thinks as 60 dead people are stacked in the morgue. The immigration situation in Spain certainly benefits hundreds of thousands of poor people who now have amnesty.

However, the economic and social price Spain will pay is staggering. Already, Spanish citizens are helpless as the socialists disrupt social order.

The Pope is a liberation theologian who prioritizes helping the poor - just as Jesus did. Leo remains largely silent when unfettered migration causes grave damage. As a Catholic journalist, interviewing the Pope is at the top of my list.

It will never happen.

In the meantime, migration from the third world will increase and dangerous situations will metastasize. Prayers are powerful, but they will not stop the poor from trying to escape their terrible situations, seeking refuge in developed countries.

What a disaster. God help us.

Bill got in on this one just a bit too late. The real hysterics were Friday/Saturday, before 90-95% of these folks headed back to Morocco.

1. I have no idea what the King of Morocco knew, but from what I can gather, the border rush was most likely encouraged by Islamists on social media. While Islamist political parties are allowed to participate in the government (they are currently in the minority), they are probably the biggest domestic opposition to the King. The campaign was designed to embarrass the King politically, especially as Morocco deepens ties across Europe (which it's been doing for awhile). European countries are obviously irritated by this rush.

2. The large majority of the migrants have gone home. There is no right of passage from Ceuta into mainland Spain under EU or Spanish law. This rush was basically a waste of time, largely undertaken by young men (and some young women) who had no idea this wasn't getting them into Europe.

3. About 3-5K of the migrants remain in Ceuta. The combination of not getting food/water and the Spanish military drove most back to Morocco. I have no idea what will happen to the rest, but it seems likely that very few will end up in Spain.

4. Pedro Sanchez sucks and will be voted out next year if not earlier (tons of corruption issues, his party is way behind in polls). But perhaps due to his terrible political standing, he has actually handled this pretty well (he deployed Spanish military forces, most of the migrants are back in Morocco, none are head to mainland Spain).

5. This is a fun story for all involved, but European countries have really tightened things up with respect to migrants. It's not the same Europe as it was from 2012-2019, not that the American right notices or cares.

About the same number of posts as them making fun of Telarico getting votes from Texans.

For those paying attention, Talarico is clearly ahead right now, and Paxton is doing nothing about it.

He will try the "gay vegan" stuff again (maybe late September), but we are to the point that there's a real risk it will be too little, too late.

I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THE TRUMP IDIOTS AGAIN FOR REJECTING THE GUY WHO VOTED WITH TRUMP 99% OF THE TIME FOR THE LESS CONSERVATIVE CRIMINAL CANDIDATE. Great job everyone! And btw, Kenny P is less conservative, he regularly does bidding for Texas trial attorneys, not exactly a right-wing bunch. Trial lawyers do love populism tho!

Talarico will vote 99% of the time with the left wing Dems, probably increasingly Dem Socialists in leadedrship during his 6 years. No idea about Texas politics but I hope he loses. I also hope the anti Israel guy loses in the Dem primary today in Michigan. He is a Dem Socialist although he says he "rejects that label". He is going to win because he is espousing free things for all. I suppose I should start making a list of free things I want.

Yes there are idiots all over in both parties. I find them to be different than the ones you point to. There were actually some R voters that would have sat out or voted for Talarico if Cornyn had represented the GOP this fall. I see cutting off your nose to spite your face to be idiotic. The same applies to those doing it in reverse.

I'm a bit confused. The Cornyn supporters who won't vote for Paxton are doing so because they believe he is unfit for the US Senate. No one credibly believes that about John Cornyn.

I'm fairly certain a voter claiming to be for Paxton/against Cornyn could not credibly argue Cornyn is insufficiently conservative when the alternative in Talarico is far, far, far less conservative. There's an argument for not voting here (Cornyn isn't "enough" of something or another, while Paxton is), but there's no logical argument for voting Talarico.

The logical argument for Talarico over Paxton is that Paxton is underserving of any office, let alone a high one. Most of the voters selecting Talarico for this reason would still vote for Dan Patrick (Lt. Governor) if he were the Senate candidate; Patrick is considerably to the right of Paxton on many issues (albeit in control of his mental faculties, which Paxton doesn't seem to be).

(In actual reality, very few Paxton primary voters would have declined to vote Cornyn, no matter how much they claimed otherwise. That was the whole point. People who understand horse race politics knew which candidate was stronger for reasons related to both ideology and corruption. People who are desperate for radical right wingers who "fight" tend not to understand horse race politics, whether that's simply a lack of comprehension or a desire to fetishize their own extremity is not for me to say.)

Yes, the Ceuta situation is not similar to the migrant crisis on the southern US border circa late 2022-early 2024, totally agree with this take. Spain will not be taking in basically any of those migrants.

I find it credible but troubling to vote for Paxton over Cornyn purely on ideology.

Right of center voters voting Talarico are overwhelmingly doing it because they think Paxton is a criminal and/or insane, likely both. Unfit for office, to put it simply.

However, it is not credible to ***** about the above after voting for Paxton in the primary when you were repeatedly told lots of voters believed Paxton was unfit. Did such voters think it a lie?

Voting doesn't say that much about a person. Voting for Ken Paxton may say a lot more than most votes, at least where you know what Ken Paxton is. Humorously, Paxton is in bed with trial lawyers, which just adds to the laughability of deeming him the "conservative" choice. No ... he was the insane, "fighter" choice. Some people don't see politics as the WWE (if it were real).

To be fair, I repeatedly read on X that Paxton primary voters would not vote for Cornyn post primary. I posted on here before Paxton won the primary I would vote straight GOP in the midterm as I realize either is more aligned with the issues I prioritize while voting in congress than that Austin clown. How any voter prioritizes something other than someone that will likely align with what they would want when congress votes on important issues is beyond me. And yes, I read the links you posted to Paxton's problems.

I have to confession here for a minute. I stole a pen recently when closing on some property at the local title company 🤷‍♂️

Was it a designer pen worth $1,500 (in the early 2010s) and did you lie about it until confronted with video evidence by the sheriff???

Cornyn would have probably gotten close to 95% of Paxton primary voters. Paxton is struggling to get 80% of Cornyn's.

I suspect a lot of what drives Rs who have stopped caring about corruption/ethics is an overriding hatred of the Democratic Party (more likely the left, but people don't make distinctions). This is bad for the country, and it applies both ways. Having decent people in on both sides absolutely helps to uphold the rule of law. Rather than charging crimes like "embarrassing the President at the reflecting pool," which went about as well as expected.
