By no means am I unhappy that this is finally getting done. I am extremely excited we are getting this facility. I just don't understand how you can go from this intriguing state of the art rendering

to.............. well this:

Granted the inside so far does like nice but the outside is an epic fail and yet again RU fails to get it right. Still happy we're getting the facility though. Thoughts?

Don't necessarily disagree. Elated that the Barnabas partnership bumped it up from $10 to $18 million to include an addition of a sports medicine center but the previous rendering looks better than these more recent ones.

That said, it's still a long way to go from concept to final design so I'll reserve final judgment until more refined designs are shared in the future.

If thats what is needed budget wise to get the thing built now,30 years after it should have been built..then who cares! start building it allready!
any info on Rac Renovation which is needed just as bad?

We complained about the Gateway, the Business School Building, the Yard, the Welcome Center, etc. and all turned out to wonderful additions to Rutgers. Let's give this a chance folks. I'm sure it will be great when all is said and done and if all it does is lessen the prominence of the RAC, it will serve its purpose.

They are building it to look like its been there since 1985 when it should have been built.

Not quite brutalist but appears to me to have a 70s-era modern look to it. Maybe the architect is trying too hard to make it compatible with the RAC, lol. The inside looks SWEET so no complaints there.

I'm sure it will look great. As stated above the latest additions have all been positive. Afterall, it can't possibly turn out worse then the renderings.

Its rather obvious the naming of the donor has dramatically changed the exterior rendering of the new facility .It looks more like a academic building than a sports practice facility. The bottom line, however,Rutgers athletics needs the facility and hopefully the interior workout areas and coaching offices have not been reduced in size.Lets get the shovels in the ground.

But doesn't the new building look closer to the look of the business building? Also, no building ever survives the original look. It usually goes through dozens of changes and appearances.

Yes and the new business building is great. Also, since they will be built right next to each other, there's synergy.

Sorry I'm not giving them a pass on this one sorry. Looks like just another building built on Livingston Campus back in the 70's. I believe Antonio Calcado, Senior VP for University Facilities was the decision maker on this one and he got it soooo wrong. Not when our resources are from the most innovative city in the world.

and not when the other school looking to get established in the Big Ten (Maryland) goes big with their new sports training facility.

The same thing was said for the Gateway/Bookstore, The Yard, the Honors College, etc, etc. Stop bitching and enjoy this spectacular moment.

Devco is not involved in the building of this structure like the others were. Perkins Eastman is.

I am enjoying it but I can't give them a pass on missed opportunities bc if you get it wrong there's no turning back.

Neither one looks all that great, or terrible, to me and the Maryland design is the worst of all with all that lumpy assymetry which is likely not going to look good not too many years from now.

Minimalism has been a dead end for western architecture.

You're comparing Maryland's $155M facility, to Rutgers'? Unless you're willing to cover that 9 figure gap I'd say the comparisons are rather pointless.

Keep in mind the prettier the architecture on the outside the more dollars that are needed. RU may not have the dollars to make it any more prettier on the outside and may instead be funneling whatever dollars it has to the inside knowingly at the cost of the outside. We just don't have a Kevin Planck or Phil Knight at this stage. Maybe someday in the future .....

Yeah. The MD pic looks like the Conquest of the Planet of the Apes version of the future.

Were you the type of guy to have the cheezy blue light kit installed under your car? That Maryland facility screams small pecker.

The outside matters, first impressions matter. If they incorporate a lot of glass, lighting and video into the façade it will hopefully come together fine.

Isn't Maryland converting part or all of existing structure (Cole Fieldhouse) or am I thinking about something else?

The last pic is a football locker room. I believe that's part of Phase 3 in the Rutgers Plan.
