"Players will be assessed a technical foul and ejection if they use derogatory language aimed at an opponent regarding race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability."

I've heard many players use the derogatory "N word" towards each other as part of their normal trash talking dialogue with each other on the court...The strict interpretation of this new rule could get interesting real fast with a ref who goes by the book.

Exactly. And that’s all we need. Another excuse for the refs to selectively use an arbitrary rule to F us over.

Two thoughts:

1. Was it necessary to include "players with disabilities?" I wonder how many disabled basketball players there are out there.

2. One disability, I would assume, would be tourettes syndrome, which former LSU player Chris Jackson had. One of the side effects of tourettes was that the person often screams out curse words uncontrollably. Sometimes at other players. Under these rules, I wonder if a player with tourettes would get ejected. Hmmm....

The bureaucrats who make up these rules are just academics with no ability to think critically whatsoever

It’s always been there when you meet with the captains of both teams before the game you tell them you will not tolerate and trash talking taughting or bating of the opposing team. After that it’s up to the officials how much they let go

Which is the problem, of course. Too vague, too subjective, just one more place where an official has cover to treat similar situations differently. "I didn't hear it" is all it takes to favor one team over another. It's tailor made for accusations of bias - most of which won't be true, probably. Bad all around.

As a fan I don't like this because of the abuse potential. If it can screw anyone it will screw UK. It would be easy for the ref to say he heard something. How will they prove/disprove. Will be spend another 10min per game listening for the offensive word?

Aside from the practical concerns, I don't think it is too much to ask players to treat each other with a certain level of respect. You can have fun and talk trash without taking it all the way there. Plus, some day they will have real jobs and have to interact with others under "real" pressure and not use that language. Why not learn a little discipline now?

The reason you don’t entertain this is because it will just lead to nonsense.

In 5 years curse words on a court might be the next thing they go after. Where does it end. Who says what’s acceptable? A friggin academic who doesn’t know how to throw a fastball?

That is the coaches and players court. They talk however they want on it. Leave it alone is the best advice. Let them handle it.

Your analogy to the workplace is nonsense with all due respect. Unless they’re calling their professor / classmates / coaches all sorts of names, it doesn’t equate. Athletes have never had a problem distinguishing between class job or field. It’s well understood. Now we’re inventing and fixing problems that never existed. ‍♀️

It’s utter nonsense and this is why sports are in decline. Get non athletes out of the decision making process before they destroy it.

The Uncaa just announced they will stop keeping score because half the participants have hurt feelings, and self esteem issues after the game. Hence forth, both teams will just receive a participation trophy. (Except for Duke, and UNC, who will receive the National Championship, and National Runnerup Trophies, alternately)

On a side note, because so many transgender players dominate women's sports, Title IX requires an equal number of all 52 sexes on every team fielded.

Good that they are clamping down on language directed at opponents with physical disabilities. I hate it when I hear them call opponents in wheelchairs as "wheels." And guys on the floor with crutches deserve better than taunts of "tripod" etc..

You are definitely not an idiot for saying that. The NCAA is consumed with PC stupidity. Consider the whole mascot issue....it is insensitive to have a native American mascot UNLESS you pay a native American tribe to sign off. To me, that makes no sense whatsoever.

I’m personally more offended if I see a player blatantly flop in front of an official in an attempt to get a bogus call, than I am to hear them trash talking each other.

Where’s the technical foul for flopping? Maybe the NCAA is waiting for Coach K to retire before implementing?
