Let me ask...are you a season ticket holder? If not, why not? We can all agree demand has gone up. Hate to break it to you, but this isn't 7 years ago. Do you really expect to be able to walk up to the ticket window and be able to purchase what is now considered premium seating? This **** is expensive. And there are obviously 1000s of people willing to put their money where there mouth is to keep me, you, and whoever else, out of those seats. That's life. The price of rent has gone up. Does it suck? Yeah. It's is fair? IMO yeah.

Telling people they have to buy a 30+ game season ticket package to be able to get a seat is NOT the right answer. We should be encouraging fans to come to games, not making it difficult for them.

We could build a third deck and just party.

The problem is, even if they had extended chairbacks all the way into the berm areas (and adding another $5-10 million to the cost), guess what? Those seats would have sold out, too, and we’d have the same problem as now. Only it would be worse, because there would be literally no designated areas where fans could even congregate (much less sit) without knowing someone with a lounge spot. The university is going to sell every ticket they can sell. They aren’t going to turn away anyone who wants to make a multi-year season ticket commitment just to hold GA seating for the walk-ups. That would be beyond stupid.

This is exactly right and well stated. It's something I wish people could experience without their "MSU fan" blinders on at OM to see the difference in how it's handled and where we've went wrong in our approach to it. At least it was different several years ago when I still had buddies playing there. I haven't been back in awhile to confirm it still is. It's why they have grown into a comparable monster fan-wise in baseball and continue spending $10-20mil every 5 years on expansions. It's a scary thought but they are going to eventually surpass us if we aren't very careful about continuing to alienate fans. There's already been a generation of fans left out at Dudy Noble basically.

Up there a nobody from Mississippi State could get there early, walk into the outfield there with a chair, cooler, grill, tent, and friends -- without tickets or anyone going thru coolers or checking their sizes -- and setup a tailgate basically to watch the game if you got there early enough. We even cooked crawfish out there a few times. Students with $0 invested and without having to do extensive planning on smuggling in enough beer for a buzz in a tiny cooler hidden under stuff were able to grill out, drink unimpeded, and fraternize with all the women in one common space. Those people had great experiences, graduated, and now still come back to do the same thing -- only now they pay good $$ to do it in left field instead of in right. Where they look straight down the hill at a huge playground with their kids running rampant prettymuch right next to the field. So even the kids are having great experiences there and it is going to snowball over time.

I've had great experiences at State in the lounges, chairbacks, skyboxes. Even a few great experiences on the hill behind the lounges. I've never had a very good experience when I was walking in without planning in advance calling in favors, etc. This stadium will make that experience much better no doubt. But it's still lacking in a couple of areas that we need to figure out...
What do you propose? Bigger grandstand or more tiered berm areas?

Exactly. It sounds ridiculous to hear people insinuating the university shouldn't put a contract on every seat in the house. If the charbacks weren't sold out, I'd listen to the conversation. But as is, the university is doing what's financially responsible.

Is this fact just lost on everyone or am I the only one - we had GA seats in the bleachers, for the past 30 years - for these 'walk up' fans in which you all speak! Where were they then? Oh that's right, they just showed up for Super Bulldog Weekend and Regionals, and thought they were entitled to a seat.

This whole argument is nonsense - the people who want to come to games regularly paid to come, and there's plenty of room for walk ups

BINGO

Price of doing business, if you're MSU baseball. Will some of these walk-up fans get mad and maybe not be MSU fans? Not if we win, they won't

Doubtful.

They came pretty close to the mark on chairback demand at the current price point since the last ones were just sold last month. Of course, in doing so they reintroduced one of the exact problems they claimed they were trying to solve with a new stadium: letting future season ticket purchasers have the option of ponying up for a chairback. They've left future money on the table.

We need more chairbacks already, and the stadium's not even finished.

Price of admission has gone up. This isn't Mayberry anymore.

that was the argument for re-seating the Hump--how has that worked out. MSU is #1 at screwing their fan base.. If you can't walk up and buy a gen. admission ticket and sit your *** down for a long *** baseball game then people will watch at Home.

Yes, people will watch at home. And that seat you didn't get to sit in is still paid for. Again, a more robust ticket exchange program is the answer, not more GA seating.

But the additional seats that should have been built won't be generating revenue. And fans are becoming more and more accustomed to not going to the games and sitting at home. Some will watch at home, many will simply do something else. And the fanbase will not grow like it should because we make it difficult to come to games instead of easy.

So I am happy with standing around for the entire game. But my folks are coming for Super Bulldawg weekend and want to go to a game but we most likely won't because they cannot stand for the entire game. They love baseball but they HAVE to sit for the game, its just not good for their health to stand all night long. So tell me, what are my options for them to experience MSU baseball? I'll tell you what it is, watching at Dave's Darkhorse from a booth. That's it. So worth the trip.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not talking about seats, I'm talking about flat tiered berms. Somewhere someone has the ability to sit down in a lawn chair and watch the game if they want to. A lot of berms with a lot of space. I don't expect too many people to be able to walk into the stadium and GA their way into chairbacks.

I do expect to be able to walk into the stadium with a lawn chair and a basic 20qt soft side with at least a 12 pack in it and post up somewhere I can see the game and get the experience of being at the game even if it's far from home plate. And on days I plan in advance -- to be able to add a grill to that equation from approximately the same vantage point(I'm fine with the guy manning the grill not being able to see the game personally -- I could see why you wouldn't want hot coals on a berm itself -- just give me the ability to have it). That is the seat I and almost everyone I know actually wants rather than the chairback with limitations that will for all intents and purposes cost you $2k up front for a single seat.

We underbuilt the chairbacks which makes the berms we did build that much more important and demanded. Then we underbuilt those berms for that demand -- and had to place a bunch of restrictions(ridiculous restrictions for all but maybe 10 games a years) to be sure they could accommodate as many people as possible. And thus took a large piece of the novelty/advantage of the berms out of the equation.

My actual solution - 1 or 2 big sets of tiered berms in the outfield. They don't have to be OM big because most of our people are already taken care of. But we need triple or quadruple the tiered berm space that we currently have -- and lax restrictions on said berm space. Make them big enough people can come 45 minutes before the game and find somewhere to put their lawn chair. And don't send them home because they have an rtic20 and a Weber.

I plan on getting to games early and setting up a chair in the grass/berm. I'm ok with that, but I can see why some won't be able to do that. Plus you can't grill.

If we had a more extensive tiered berm, that would be awesome. Maybe in the future, they can figure something out in that regard.

why cant we have both? give the home side down to half-way down the first base line and upper deck to season ticket holders and the other half down through first with the shortened section to GA first-come-first serve. its really not that difficult to keep every type fan in mind. its not a huge sacrifice to give basically 3 sections to GA and everything else to season ticket holders...most of which dont show up to every game. why is that not a good compromise? they can make up the cost by charging what they would have gotten or MORE for those that want the convenience and availability of GA but can only make a few games a year. that should satisfy everyone....but we wont do that...it would make too much sense.

The problem isn't needing more GA seating, it's the fact that there is zero GA seating, none, nada, zilch unless you sit on the ground on one of the berms. I am fortunate in that I have access to multiple lounges but I am not going to wear out my welcome by depending on them and becoming an imposition. Last I looked, I was around 1500 in BDC points and I couldn't get reserved chair backs when they went on sale last year. What options does this give a young couple with a couple of kids who want to go to a couple of games a year. I don't know about you but my wife isn't going to a game if I tell her she is going to have to stand for 3 1/2 - 4 hours. I get the money issue and the desire to sale the season tickets but baseball is a walk up game, its not like football. The young family and recent grads are the ones you want in the reserved seats 15-20 years from now, why make it impossible for them to attend now? What if my buddy from Tn visits, " Hey you want to go see the best stadium in NCAA baseball, but you're going to have to stand up for the entire time because it is impossible to buy a seat".

let them charge whatever they want for GA...no problem with that. a price for convenience for those not willing or able to commit time/financially to buying season tickets.

We would have huge tiered berm spaces in the outfield if it was not for the lounges. That's simply something that cannot be changed since most of that room is taken up in the outfield by the lounges.

I do think the area in right field (between the end of the lounges and the big circle entrance) can be better utilized than it is now. That's about the only space that can be changed into a tiered berm where people can just walk up and start partying with a grill and crawfish. We've sacrificed the ability to have a large area like that for the sake of the lounges. They should have extended the lounges all the way to the foulpole in right field, and used that entire area behind that (bathrooms to circle entrance) for some type of tiered GA seating. But they didn't ask for my opinion.

If you could buy one of the 4,000 unused reserved seats for $5, does this solve your problem? Sounds like we just need a ticket exchange or way for the University to resell tickets that season ticket holders don't plan to use. But you can't expect to walk up for SBW or postseason games. That's the benefit of purchasing season tickets.

You are right. But a little creativity allows almost anything to happen. Nothing saying the berms have to only go up to ground level. OM's actually is pretty tall in right now and are forever far behind the fence or at least used to be. Alot of people that desire the berms at OM go for the experience and the game itself is consequential to that. You don't have to give those people great seats -- just a common area to party where they can see the field if they want to. You can create that section anywhere you want -- and it frees up the other sections for people that go for the game itself. I'd think you still need a tiered berm section in right also however.

Upper deck. I hope you realize I am talking about next year and beyond. I would think that even someone as entitled as you could put up with a minor one year inconvenience

It is entitled that visitors who need a seat might get concerned that they won't have one? Sure thing Jan. If there was a good ticket exchange then I would be all about it but we market SBW as this huge event where welcome non-MSU folks to town and then do not offer an option for people who NEED a seat. Not want a seat. NEED a seat.

What you just described, is sooooo Ole Miss. But yes, if you can make this work in the future, do it, sure. But it should not be a priority of ours on the front end. MSU prides itself in having knowledgeable baseball fans, I would think the ticket exchange is a much bigger priority

I agree with everything you said. The design of the outfield is great but does not account for enough GA seating as you described.

The big circle baseball entrance is fantastic, but takes up valuable space in an area that could have been better thought out.

Where would we put another berm? Someone here or another board mentioned the flat concrete area in right field lounge behind the students. That might mess with the right field entry plaza. Anyone know if there is room to put anything behind the last row of lounge spots in right field?

I assume that one option for additional capacity would be to extend the upper deck farther down the 3rd base line above/behind the lower deck and maybe above/behind either set of berms. They likely considered that when deciding on how much capacity to build from the start. Don't see the school holding any new chairbacks back for general admission, though.

I hope the school does not simply put up general admission metal bleachers on that flat spot in the right field lounge. That would look awful inside (and especially from the outside next to the awesome entry plaza) with the rest of the stadium having such a classic look.

Just let people sit in unused chairbacks after the 1st or 2nd inning and that solves a lot of problems (and creates a small one for latecoming season ticket holders having to tell people in their seats to move).

I agree with the OP, they made a mistake not giving the GA tickets a viable option for seating. I stood talking to one of the ramp attendants for an inning and multiple people came up and asked where they could sit and the answer was, GA tickets are standing room only. I finally gave my two chair back GA tickets to a couple and told them to enjoy them because I wasn't using the seats. By saying that you either buy season chair backs, which you can't at this time, or you have access to an outfield rig, in order to sit and watch the game, they are alienating a lot of people.

This is about thebbe a bigger fiasco than men’s basketball seating. If there is no decent seats to sit in for those with GA tickets, why come?

ETA: Any season ticket chair back holders who can’t makr midweek games and have 2 or more I’d gladly Venmo/cash app you for them for a decent price

2 games in with a half-finished stadium and people are complaining. I guess we should have played all the games away this season.

I would hope that the upper level will have some GA seating when It's done, but don't be surprised if demand is strong enough that the univ sells all those, too.

im saying charge whatever to insulate the loss...im even saying charge more for ga to compensate for the potential loss. double the price per ticket if necessary or higher to where there is no loss for the athletic dept and it is still available for the average joe.

I just don't get the obsession over it. That's all. I understand they aren't mutually exclusive, but I don't get all the wringing of hands over seating capacity when it comes into play about 6 times a year, if that. Based on recent attendance, we way over built.

eta: Just to be clear my point is the ideal situation is the current stadium being filled or semi-filled on a regular basis instead of sporadically huge crowds at the old stadium (and let's face it that's all we have had since the double header SEC weekends ended). I am not sure our population distribution will ever make this feasible regardless of our success, but if I had the choice I'd go with "A."

Great points. Except, “sporadically” is actually a massive overstatement. We had about a 60-70% full grandstand in game 3 of the Arkansas series in 2016, on a SATURDAY, with 17ing SEC championship on the line. It was pathetic, and I will never forget how piss poor the attendance was at the only SEC championship we’ve ever won on our home field in my lifetime. The new stadium solved the problem of allowing folks who want (and will use) grandstand tickets but haven’t been able to get them for 30+ years. That is really the main problem that needed to be solved.

In the old DNF, we filled up the grandstand, on average, about 3 times per year in the regular season. Those games would be Fri / Sat of SBW every year and Fri / Sat of the Ole Miss series every other year. If SBW happened to coincide with the OM series, that number drops to 2 games per year. That’s literally less than 10% of the home schedule where the absolute best seats in the house were actually filled. There was no way we needed to masssively expand our existing grandstand based on those numbers. Yeah its super fun to talk about the 15k plus at SBW and during regionals, but its literally just a conglomeration of a **** ton of fair weather fans that were mostly there for the social aspect than the actual number of core supporters that truly support the baseball team. People need to get over it.

So tell the Ath Dept to turn away money? That's not going to happen.

If that last lower level section down the 3rd base line was held out for general admission, that would have cost the athletic department $277,000 in one-time pledges and around $50,000 per year in season tickets. Some of that $50k would be recouped by single-game GA ticket sales, of course.

Let GA ticket holders sit in unused seats after the 1st or 2nd inning, and/or have a usable ticket transfer/resale system. That should be enough for all but a few regular season games.

If at all possible, let fans put folding chairs just behind the concourse rail. More than one row of chairs might cause safety or crowd movement problems, but ONE row of chairs should be ok. Put a line on the concourse that chairs have to stay in front of.
