At 2:45 yesterday in Vicksburg I heard a hissing sound coming from the kitchen. I walk in to see a black rat snake (I think) crawling in my window where my ac unit is. It sees me, freaks out crawls in the house, slithers across the kitchen counter and goes behind the oven. I immediately leave and call orkin. They say wait for a call back. 2 hours later I call them back and they say it will be Monday. I've called every snake catcher on the internet with no help at all. Most just outsource me back to orkin. I'm not going back in there until it is removed.

Does anyone know of a snake removal service that will come to my house today?

If you are not scared of snakes and want to come get it yourself I'll be glad to pay a service fee.
Please help!

I used a guy called critter catcher to get some squirrels out of my attic. I live in Madison, so I’m not sure if he covers Vicksburg. His number is 601-966-5539. Hopefully he’s not one you tried already.

My suggestion is to put some tall hunting boots on and go get, especially if you’re sure it’s not venomous.

Meanwhile, I'd put out some Glue traps

all over the joint.

My brother let a king snake get loose in the house when we were kids. He planned to take it to school for show and tell. This is rural MS in the 60s.

He put it in a small bathroom trash can and covered it with an empty shoe box. When Mom got home and he proudly showed off his catch, the trash can was empty. Never found that snake. I thought it was funny but Mom didn't.

If you’re on Facebook, post on there, offer a free sixpack, and if you’re like me you’ll have half a dozen redneck friends who’ll come over within an hour to catch that bastard.

Wouldn’t use the oven, you think you don’t want a snake in your house, how about a dead snake that starts stinking. He’ll move eventually, I’d leave the door cracked (first). If it’s just you and you realize it’s not going to hurt you (assuming it’s a rat snake), he’ll show up. then you can negotiate an exit. Rat snakes give off a musk so you might smell him before you see him.

ETA: if you’re married majority of above doesn’t apply and u may just have to burn the house.

The “hiss” you described is spot on to that of an adult male King Cobra. I’d estimate 12-14 ft in length. They’re pretty docile until you get within a city block of them. Best of luck.

It’s just a rat snake. You’ll be ok. Enjoy the fact you won’t have any rats in your kitchen. Snake? I’m good. I’ll get it. Rat/mouse and you can 17ing have the kitchen.

I would never want to put a pet in danger, but in this situation I would love to have a little terrier dog around.
Terriers are aggressive and are great at hunting and killing small predators and rodents.
If it's a non venomous snake, I would have tried to have a little terrier track it down.

When I was a kid our cat used to leave dead snakes on our doorstep so maybe a cat would do the same.

I read on here where you could inject it with ketamine, but it might take a few minutes before the snake is sleeping and you need to monitor its breathing during the process. Or a mop handle and a kitchen knife should do the trick.

I know a teacher whose student asked him one time how he would kill a snake. The teacher replied, "I don't know. I guess I would get a hoe." The teacher replied, "you mean you would get a bad woman to kill the snake?"

If you were in North Ms I would bring my dog by. She kills everything. Birds, moles, snakes, squirrels, etc... She has even stolen fish you are reeling in before you get it to the bank. She chased a snake up our gutter the other day. Didn’t kill it, but wasn’t for lack of trying.

You gonna have to man up. Have a couple of buddies come over. Pull out the oven. Snake will probably coil up in a defensive position. Pin him with a hoe. Shoot him with a 410. Don’t miss.

.38 revolver with rat shot. At that range a 410 is gonna do some floor damage. Flip the oven over too, it will crawl up into the oven amongst the insulation. Your first mistake was leaving, you should have eyes on that oven 24/7 until it’s located. It’s probably moved to another part of the house by now. You will never sit on the toilet without looking behind it again.

Once you see a snake you can never unsee it.

The snake is there forever and you will look for it forever.

Burn the house.

What is it that you do in Vicksburg that results in a social circle where you don't have a half dozen redneck friends that would love to tackle this problem? You just get transferred in with the Corps or something?

I once used moth balls to convince a family of raccoons to vacate my attic. Maybe that will work on a snake. Of course your house is going to smell like moth balls for a few days...

I'm from Vicksburg. I could probably get some rednecks over there if it comes to that.

Update

We need an update.

I'm Alive!

I called the critter catcher guy recommended above. He came to my house looked around with a flashlight for 20 minutes, said he couldn't find it, told me to call back if i see it again. Like I'm ever going in there again, yeah right! I agree with above poster, I should have never left, nor taken eyes off him. Big Mistake! Now we have no clue where it is. However I'm deathly afraid of snakes and heights but I would jump out of a plane if it had a snake in it. I panicked when i shouldn't have. My neighbor and I walked through the house yesterday. We didn't see it, but then again a snake can hide pretty well. I turned my 4 bed/3 bath house into a 1 bed/1 bath. I duct taped doors shut off every room that I don't need, and stuffed towels under so if its in one of those rooms it cant get to me. I still have not slept in the house since. Hell i had nightmares feeling like things were crawling on me at my friends house. I need therapy after this incident. I think I have PTSD now! I've basically been homeless the past 4 days. You are 100% correct, once you see it, you can never unsee it.

I am originally from Jackson not Vicksburg, still work in Ridgeland, don't have many people i know here. My friends said burn it down as most posters here have stated. I'm not far from that option.

It's possible the snake left on its own, the way it came in. It's also possible that it didn't which concerns me. I taped up the window it came in so it will not be able to get in again but that also means I could have trapped his only escape.

I do have a gas oven and i suppose its possible the snake left through the hole for the gas line. It could be in the walls for all I know. I don't think i will ever be comfortable in that house again. Every little noise i hear has me jumpy.

I don't know what to do. I'm very disappointed in Orkin who still hasn't called me back by the way. I can't believe wildlife/game wouldn't help.

I don't want to move. I love the space and land out here in Warren County. It's much nicer than the city life, but I've never seen a snake in any city house so my mind is changing quickly.

Better get a house cat. If Mr No Shoulders is crawling around your best bet is the cat! I have an outside cat named "Tiger" for a reason. If it jumps, hops, flies, crawls Tiger will get it!

I have had pet snakes all my life. A rat snake is absolutely nothing to worry about. It can't possibly harm you (except maybe give you a heart attack).

Garlic oil is supposed to repel snakes. Other than your home smelling like garlic for a while it might be worth a shot.
