Exactly, he was forced to play center when that is just not his game. Also how was he a disappointment? He wasn’t a five star kid coming out of high school, I guarantee if I told you the day he signed that his career played out like this you’d be pumped. Nowhere in my initial post did I say he would be a star, I said his game fit the modern nba, which it does. As a small ball 4 his game fits well, he needs to improve obviously but if you don’t think he has the physical gifts to contribute then you’re watching a different guy. I don’t know if he’ll ever carve out a role but a guy at his size with his gifts fits with the modern nba.

if I told you our first NBA player in 20 years would shoot .45/.33/.667, average 11.8 points, 5 rebounds, 1.9 ast, 1.9 blk, 1.3 stl in his best season while playing in exactly 0 NCAA tournament games and making exactly 0 all-conference teams, my guess is you'd have said that's a disappointment.

5 rebounds? At least get the numbers right. To each their own, what i'm saying is a kid who had 5 offers and the second best was maybe northern Iowa? Northern Illinois? turned himself into the 45th pick after his junior year. He was not a perfect player and certainly had glaring deficiencies. But the team did not struggle because of him, he was on a team with no spacing and lots of guys that liked to have the ball and take lots of shots. People much smarter than us thought he was worth the 45th pick. Either way we can agree to disagree, I would say he greatly outpaced expectations but you're right in saying the team did not accomplish what youd expect with an nba prospect on the roster.

good catch, 5drb, 6.9 total rebs.. my b

yes, his story is awesome. I'm very happy for him and will continue to root for him. I absolutely think he's worth the pick for his measurables alone, never said he wasn't. hope he develops into the player we all wished he would've been while at NU.

Yeah I think we are pretty much debating in complete agreement.

Jaxson Hayes was drafted 8th overall last night - and he only averaged 10ppg and 5rpg and couldn't even get Texas to the NCAA tournament.

Mike Daum, who is 6th in career points in the entire history of college basketball, did not get drafted. Neither did Ethan Happ, who was the 1st Big Ten player in 35 years to finish with over 2000 points and 1000 rebounds.

College stats are not as important as athletic ability when it comes to the NBA draft.

No offense but Ethan Happ is an ackward big man that can’t shoot outside 10-15 feet. Hits only half of his free throws and only a bit more that 50% from the field, again, mostly from inside 12 feet. There is no upside to his game. He is as good now as he’ll ever be. He is a current day Tyler Hansbrough.

pardon the dose of reality, but what about 'his game' fits? the 33% 3pt shooting? the 45% shooting from the field? his inability to handle the ball or create his own shot from the wing? 5 rebs/game as the primary big man?

the only elite stat Roby produced were his 2 blocks/game. if he can play on-ball defense against NBA wings, I can see that being an in for him. 3 & D guy, assuming he vastly improves his shot and can get up over 40%.

he's 6'8". we'll see what happens, I'm rooting for him. but his career at NU can't be chalked up as anything but a disappointment.

it's been 20 years since we've had an NBA player. it's like coming out of a famine and thinking leavened bread deserves a Michelin rating.

Look at the facts though. He was always going to be our only player drafted by far and yet all the so-called “plays” were drawn up for someone else, very little effort in getting Roby open looks. Under a different coach that kid could’ve shined a lot more (FG%, points, assists) and that’s why he got drafted, later. He shined where he had more control, on defense. He does need to get more consistent and that’s on him but he has a lot of potential and if he works hard he absolutely will be good.

he's a tremendously athletic guy who AT TIMES has shown the ability to be a formidable offensive weapon. He got drafted primarily on what he put defensively on video against some other NBA draft picks and on what he showed at the combine. IMO, he's a guy who is going to do nothing but get better as he matures. I do NOT like Mark Cuban, but IMO Roby landed in a great place with an owner who cares about his players. Cuban obviously likes Roby a bunch. This could be really good for him.
