That part is MUCH stranger than retaining Hughes. Leach at least needs one on field staff member that knows the area and can recruit, so it would be detrimental to no keeping Hughes (he is not staying for an off field job). As bad as WSU has been on defense I'm not sure why any defensive assistants coming from WSU are a significant need other than Leach is familiar with them.

Not sure if it was clear from my example or not, but I was still counting Hughes as an on-field coach as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. And I’d even be fine if we paid him very well for that role...$700-$800k if that’s what it took. But you can’t let the tail wag the dog with the DC hire.

I don’t think either of them are bad at all on paper, which is is all we have to go on right now. Phelps has been a Power 5 DL coach for almost a decade now. McBath is a little less proven, but Leach trusts him and he doesn’t strike me as very different from guys like Buckley or Townsend that we’ve had.

My point is that we are paying more for assistants than we did last year and presumably paying more than WSU but leach isnt using that extra money to "upgrade" the staff

Go glance at Leach’s coaching tree. He’s beyond reproach on hiring assistant coaches at this point.

There will be a lot things we will not understand about Leach. Just trust the guy and move on. He knows what he is doing.

I don't understand why Leach hired 2 of his assistants from Washington State on the defensive side before we hired a DC. I hope this is not the reason we missed out on a promising Defensive Coordinator.
