Doesn’t make sense to me...State gets about as much talent on defense as anyone in the country. He said it was mutual, but I doubt that.

Want to see who we end up with before I really react to this. Nobody had ever heard of Newberry until a week ago. Not sure his rationale for turning down an SEC job to stay in The American but that’s his prerogative.

So much for our upgraded assistant budget. We are just giving his guys raises. I am fine with bringing his offensive staff from WSU but really thought the extra miney would be used on a big time defensive staff.

Some things don’t change

So much for our upgraded assistant budget.

How many times have we heard “we’re really going to pay assistants more this time”?

I have zero knowledge of this situation, but my guess is money was a factor.

I can't imagine it would not have been a raise for him. Maybe Navy pays well. I'm missing Shoop already

He wanted to bring his own assistants. It would’ve cost us Tony Hughes. Not worth it with his limited resume.

Who says we still won’t go get a good DC?

At this point, I think we go get a top linebacker coach in the league. Would Peveto at A&M make a good DC? I know he can recruit and has coached linebackers at LSU and Ole Miss too.

We probably "upgraded" the budget from $1M for the defensive staff to $1.1M. This is really looking like a cluster-17.

You guys melt faster than your elitedawg brethren. Good grief...take a breath. It's going to be ok.

You disagree? Do you not know of all the players in the league that played on defense at Mississippi State?

I said about as much, which obviously (although maybe not obvious to you) excluded Bama, LSU, the elite programs.

Remember the meltdown after Napier didn’t work out? Or what about when Sark wasn’t named the HC when everyone expected him?

Chill out. We are about to pay a DC in the $1.2-1.5 million range. We should fully expect to get a good one. If we end up with Purdue’s linebacker coach, then you can melt. Until then, let’s see who gets hired.

Well...... could it possibly be that Mr. Rosebowl's sources may have been incorrect? Was there ever an official announcement from the school?

Sorry, but that’s a terrible reason to pass on a good DC. As soon as Leach was hired, the DC hire became by far and away the second most important position to fill with a quality candidate. You don’t try to fit your DC hire around who you want the safeties coach to be....that’s totally backwards.

Besides, there’s all sorts of things you can do with Hughes to keep him on staff for his recruiting ties without making him the safeties coach. Make him associate head coach / recruiting coordinator, for example. With Leach doubling as OC and QB coach, that’s two positions you don’t have counting towards the assistant coach limit, so you can afford to do that.

I don't understand why Leach hired 2 of his assistants from Washington State on the defensive side before we hired a DC. I hope this is not the reason we missed out on a promising Defensive Coordinator.

Annapolis is awesome. Working at one of the nation's military academies is even more so.

I still think he'll be the one we end up with, but I would not blame him for wanting to stay put. Hasn't he only been there a year?

Boy, that is even stranger than the Napier deal. A guy that has ONE year of FBS DC experience gets a chance to get an SEC DC job and doesn't take it? Have to believe there were some issues with Leach and maybe some assistants Newberry felt were being pushed on him. He's a guy that two years ago was at freakin' Kennesaw State.

Unless he just has a LOVE for being at a military academy, absolutely nothing makes a lot of sense with him staying at Navy versus an SEC job.

That part is MUCH stranger than retaining Hughes. Leach at least needs one on field staff member that knows the area and can recruit, so it would be detrimental to no keeping Hughes (he is not staying for an off field job). As bad as WSU has been on defense I'm not sure why any defensive assistants coming from WSU are a significant need other than Leach is familiar with them.

Everybody is mighty trigger happy to blame MSU and Starkville for this guy not coming but, as tiny as the odds may be, it's possible he may not being completely sold on Leach.

Or it's possible he was never actually contacted and that it was all speculation taken as fact?

True. Or maybe he wanted to bring in 2 of his guys and we don't have room. Leach has brought in most of his staff from Washington state. Compare that to what Kiffin has done.

Wth? hahahahah

that’s not that off base. They just had the number 1 Defense in the country in 2018. Better than all of those 5 stars at Bama. Better than anything Dave Aranda has ever put on the field at LSU. The best defense overrated Aranda has ever fielded was #5 in 2016.

I think you left Dak, Dillon Day, and Moulds off of your All-Time State Defensive players in the NFL ***
