Don't like the freshman excuse in February. Boo Buie looked pretty damn good for only being a true freshman. Mulcahy was more highly rated as a recruit, too.
From this article. Buie played a fine game, but far from perfect.

https://dailynorthwestern.com/2020/...truggles-down-the-stretch-in-loss-to-rutgers/

“Freshman guard Boo Buie took three floaters down the stretch that didn’t land anywhere near the basket.”

“Buie was the focal point of the Cats’ offense all game, leading NU with 19 points. But he took 15 shots, and he struggled trying to score one-on-one late.”

I agree with the take that NW lost the game based on Buie hijacking the offense late in the game.

He will be in the gym in the off season and will be a breast next year. There is a lot of talent coming in that should help with scoring. But, this team is going to surprise teams during the big dance. The B1G team are aware of our defense and we stall can lock them down. During the tournament, they will not be ready.
Gotta change that first line, cracks me up reading it. Gives new to meaning to being a baller. Thanks for the laugh!

Just stop. Buie was in a rhythm and looked good while shooting 8 times from 30 ft away from the rim (perhaps he watched too many Steph Curry youtube vids prior to the game). He went 5 for 8 from 3. How many times will that happen in the future for a guy who shoots less than 40% from the floor and was previously 34% from 3 (prior to this game)? Apparently you also forgot about all his misses down the stretch......you also conveniently forgot to look at his game log and splits. The kid has all the makings of a ISO type volume shooter who will be hot on some nights. Look at his games against MSU, OSU and MD.....just terrible.

This forum is like sharks waiting for chum in the water so they can attack RU players who show ups and downs in their development.......while being quick to glorify players who have good games against us.

Here’s the thing about Paul: teams know he is not a great Shooter, and he was brought here knowing that, but once that part of his game develops he’s going to be one of the most valuable players in the entire conference. Bet on it.. He doesn’t even have to become a great shooter. Just good enough so that other defenses are forced to stay on him when he’s outside.

Too many of you ripped Paul on Sunday. He made 2 threes today and led us back. He had 12 points on I think 5-6 shooting and 3 assists. He will have a wonderful career at RU. Fans should stop ripping any of our players. They are good representatives for our school. Most of you probably never even participated in a college sport in your life. it is nice to hide behind a key board. we don't need to have so many negatoids.

Well I do think last night's game does point to OP being correct about Mulcahy needing to focus on looking for his own shot a bit more.

OP just went too far in concluding he is not ready for B1G play.

I thought the problem with that sequence is that he passed up a wide open 3 early in the set, which then led to him taking a tougher shot.

He definitely got bumped on that shot, enough to throw off his timing.

I mentioned this as well during the summer. It did not take a genius to know he would have issues as a perimeter defender. I to was called a Mulcahy hater for bringing it up.
Geo gets beat off the dribble every other time down the court and he doesn't see the court nearly as well as Mulcahy, but everyone loves him. As far as running the offense, Mulcahy is the best of all our guys, and I don't think that's even close.

Amazing someone can start a thread like this and not have the balls to come back with anything after the OSU game.

Mulcahy is a true freshman getting BIG10 minutes. He’s shown flashes and has also struggled at times. That’s expected for any freshman getting meaningful minutes in this league!

This kid is gonna be a good one. He’s gonna make huge strides this summer and come back even better and stronger, but still have more to improve upon. By his Junior/Senior year he has potential to be one of the best to put a Rutgers uniform on.

OP is so negative all the time it’s sickening. I feel sorry for those innocent people whose teeth you care for.

Kid takes it into the paint with no fear and surrounded by defenders, keeps his wits about him and delivers a brilliant wraparound-the-neck assist to MJ for the jam.

On the road in a hostile environment — pretty good for a true frosh. Those two treys were outstanding as well, and a hint of things to come...

I bet he works his *** off in the gym this summer and comes back a solid shooter. His ability to use his length to get layups and little floaters close to the hoop is amazing. But if he can knock down 3s at 30%, he'll be awesome.

Just so you know. Paul is 7 for 19 at 37% and just .5% pts behind team leading Yebola. But he's even better than that last half of his attempts.

I am about to dislocate a shoulder patting myself on the back here...

(from Jan 26)
I get defending Mulcahy.. I love his game too. But OP is correct.. when he turns down open shots he is allowing his defender to play off him and help out and shut down passing lanes... he needs to shoot when open.

and 5-6 others here agreed with that comment...

He makes himself tough to guard by the way he uses his body and the fact that he plays with his head up. Keeps defenders honest because if you double him he’ll burn ya.

PS did you notice how the team immediately spaces themselves when Paul has the ball?

His best play tonight was hustling back on D to steal the ball on a breakaway for Illinois, turning it into a 3 on our end. The future is so bright for this guy.
in his recent poor 3 games or so.. he would lose his man looking for that... was very obvious.. he's like a DB in football that tries to sneak a peak at the QB.. a bad habit.. unless it works.

He plays a very thoughtful game, otherwise. I have seen him sneak peaks on offense.. without the ball.. to plan what to do when he gets the ball.. then comes a no-look. Very nice..

and on D, I was watching a replay of an opposition big man score down low and PM noticing that he brought the ball down low on the rebound... you could see PM recognize this... then on subsequent bounds you'd see him trying to sneak closer to go strip it... he gave up an open 3 to his man before it worked.. but it did work eventually.. and that big man was not quite comfortable anymore going right back up with it.

He will be the floor general I have hoped to see lead Rutgers as a junior and senior. And that is what richthedentist refuses to see... but almost everyone else does see. Hell.. Geo Baker sees it and has said as much.

your correct the way he usually keeps the defender on his back!
Always thinking ahead, waiting for the play to open up.

He was losing or not closing out because he was so commited to helpside. Doesn't quite have the speed to recover. Folks busting his balls for trying to be a great teammate first.
Somebody finally convinced him to just play ball.
