Greg has wasted no time getting the recruiting class together. Don’t blame him for not waiting around on kids who aren’t ready to commit.

Wigenton said Schiano wanted him to commit on the spot.
“Not a lot of people know this,” he said, “but the new staff came in and asked if I was ready to commit if they’d offer a scholarship that day. If not, they didn’t want to get involved. I didn’t like that. I just didn’t get a good vibe from the Rutgers staff.
“When he got hired, they got eight commits pretty fast. He was just searching around looking for players ready to commit. If you weren’t ready, he didn’t want to get involved. I didn’t like that, but it is what it is.”
Smith said Schiano’s crew thought Wigenton was a valuable prospect but wasn’t the right fit.
“At the end of the day, they’re very careful with the Jersey kids,” Smith said. “When the new staff came in, the offensive line filled up a little bit. They’re looking for pure tackles, kids that have played the position. They had a specific body type they were looking for.”

I found it bizarre that he claims he grew up as a big Rutgers fan.. and always thought he would end up there.. and then when Schiano offered him he didn't want to commit right away. Seems fishy. Best of luck.
He might have had that feeling I get when pressured buying a car. Nothing will get me running faster out of a dealership than that “ well I can’t promise you that car will still be here in 26 hours speech.” More than once I have ended up buying the same exact car somewhere else because of the now or never approach. Schiano was in a very tough spot though, trying to keep guys on the current team and building for the future within a matter of days after officially being hired.

car is a commodity. A college isn't and scholarships are limited. Not apples to apples.

Maybe I'm old, or maybe it's the teacher in me, but holding kids back in HS just for sports seems really slimy.

Actually at places like Lawrenceville, Peddie and Hun you also have kids held back who are not heavily involved in athletics.

It happens everywhere. Sometimes sports related, sometimes maturity/physical related.

If he’s a Rutgers legacy ... our batting average with athletes who had some previous family connection with Rutgers is low. Very low. Sad to say.

Those schools accept post-graduates as well. They finish high school and need another year before heading off to college. Helps them get into better schools. But expensive as hell.

If he washes out at MSU he will be begging Greg to take him back at RU.

He Committed to Ash but refuses to play for Greg?

OK, Pass.

Much better lately. The Tverdovs in football. Malachi Melton in football. Coach Owens has two at Rutgers-one plays softball and one plays baseball. Pretty sure there are some on one of the lacrosse and/or soccer teams.

Recruitings a slimy endeavor. Not sure why anyone questions why he didn’t want to commit with one day to think it over lol.

I don't understand this kids logic. He says moving away to Princeton prepared him to go away from home. Isn't Rutgers away from home as much as the Hun School?

I have never seen McCord play. I have seen plenty of Guarantano. Looking back, we didn’t miss out much not getting him. Is he better than Sit, yeah. Would he have gotten us to a bowl? Nope.—No matter the school, many kids do not want to go where the Dad, Mom, brother, third cousin once removed, etc. went. They want something different and want to create their own path. This is for all students, not just student-athletes.We probably don’t do any worse or better than other schools for legacy athletes.

Seems obvious Schiano didn’t want him. You have to honor Ash’s commits, but there is a way of pretty much letting them know they aren’t necessarily wanted and should look elsewhere. They probably told him that in so many words. Schiano felt he had better options.

Yeah, definitely not what I'd expect. At first, I thought maybe he got spooked by the pressure to commit. Then I figured, if he's always wanted to go to RU, what's the problem? I think what his coach had to say may have a lot to do with it.

Hey, is that an RU welcome mat in your profile pic?

It's sour grapes on the kid's part.

Austin Dean was given a similar speech by Schiano and he thought about it for a few days and decided RU was the place he wanted to be at.

If RU was Wigenton's dream school he would have been "all in" immediately. More likely was RU was his safety net while waiting for other offers.

I’m sorry but with the return of Schiano Rutgers is the better landing spot than MSU in the not so distant future. MSU stadium has been just as empty if not more than ours the past few years, and Flood and even Ash almost beat them a couple times, including on the road. Even Norries Wilson gave them all they could handle in their playoff season. The scores with them will soon flip around just like Syracuse, etc.

Isn't there a PG school in CT where we've brought in some good players?

Perhaps but on the other hand MSU apparently had a different appraisal

Sit is a better passer. He had time to throw and open players to throw to. That doesn’t make him better. More experienced yes.
