Ok. Someone with more knowledge, please fill me in... I'm hearing varying versions of the seeding process.

Does RPI come into play BEFORE conference automatic bid placement?

Lets say that the MPC finishes this way: (my guesses)

North Davidson 5-0
Oak Grove 4-1 (lost to ND and guessing they win against CD on Friday)
Central Davidson 3-2 (lost to ND and I'm guessing they lose to OG on Friday)
Ledford 2-3 (lost to OG, Central and probably will lose to ND on Friday)
Asheboro 1-5 (assuming they beat MC)
Montgomery Central 0-6 (assuming they lose to Asheboro)

I'd thought that ND would get placed with the other conference champs, according to RPI
Same with OG in this scenario. Getting placed according to RPI as compared to other 2nd place teams...
After that, I'd assume other teams would get in according to their RPI. (Props to the MPC's fourth place team being "ranked" 3rd overall in the West)

However, I've heard that this year, the RPI will play more of a factor overall.
Somebody who is "in the know"... I'd love to hear from you about it.

Conference champs will be seeded first based on RPI, then all other qualifiers will be seeded based on RPI regardless of conference finish. Second place conference finishers will be seeded with wild card based on RPI, they will not be seeded ahead of wild card teams unless their RPI is higher.

Perfect explanation. Thank you very much!

Sucks for OG and CD. They both beat Ledford and yet because of RPI Ledford is in a better position than they are...

The NCHSAA often changes things... Maybe they didn't foresee this being an issue. I know they didn't foresee a situation a few years back when South Caldwell "won" the 4A portion of their 3A/4A conference. They went into the playoff with home game for the first round... Their record was 1-10 overall.

They fixed that... They'll fix this too I hope. Honestly though, with the RPI screwed up as badly as it in with some teams, there probably isn't as bad of a disadvantage. I'd rather play a #2 Pisgah than a #4 Dudley in the second round.

4 teams make it in from the MPC:

#5 North Davidson vs #28 West Henderson
#14 Ledford vs #19 Central Davidson
#15 Oak Grove vs #18 East Lincoln

Seems fair enough from this perspective. The second place placement that Ledford earned doesn’t feel too exciting now. I’d rather hit my hand with a hammer than play Central Davidson again this year.

Central wins by 2+ TD’s unless Ledford figures out how to defend Central’s offense which I’m not sure any of the MPC teams can do with confidence. Ledford has a key player out and although others are stepping up to try and fill that gap I just personally after seeing both play think they have what it takes.

Predictions for second round:

ND vs Hickory

CD vs Dudley

OG vs Statesville

Don't think there's any question about North beating West Henderson... Central should beat Ledford but who knows in a playoff rematch... OG and East Lincoln should be a good matchup and OG could lose but I'll take em.

Going one step further, if ND wins against Hickory/Smoky Mountain, they are likely looking at Crest in round 3.

On another note, Pisgah is the worst #1 overall seed I've ever seen. Just calling it like I see it...

I looked up the OG matchup and those 2 teams “statistically” are about dead even. Should be a really good game. Personally pulling for OG. Of course I like to stick with conferences I was a part of so I’ll be for about anyone in the MPC.

I got fussed at in another thread for downplaying Pisgah…. Just like you, I’m not disrespecting them…. It’s just how it played out. I don’t see them going past the second round. I know this has been a tough year for them with the flooding, loss of life and loss of stadium…. So respect to them for playing through all of that.

West is going to be A LOT better than you expect, quite possibly the best 3 win team you'll see. I do not know a whole lot about ND but did see they lost by 50+ to Asheville, the same Asheville team that beat a 3 win Brevard team by only 2. Obviously things are futile this day and age, and I have no clue what factored in to those scores but West has had one of the toughest roads to the playoffs having to play the #1 Seed in the 3A West and 2 title contenders in 2A (Hendersonville and Chase) whose records are a combined 27-3, Hendersonville being as good if not better than Asheville. West played the first half of the season without their star QB and missing 4+ starters per game due to COVID. There would be without a doubt 2 if not 3 extra wins had they team that played the last 4 weeks, been the team that started the season, but either way, they weren't and here they are. They're playing their best ball of the year and up to this year, were a team that was in a conference with AC Reynolds, Asheville, Erwin et al. They'll be tough and they're playing their best ball to date.

If you or your boys are overlooking them, you might just be surprised.

Asheville is no where near the team they were when they played Brevard. They were missing several players due to injury then including their starting QB. A wide receiver was playing QB for them at that time. Asheville is ten times better now then they were the second week of the season so comparing scores isn’t fair to anyone.

Maybe. ND isnt the same team that lost to Aville. Six turnovers in that game created a snowball effect, undefeated since. The boys are playing their best ball now, only losses were to 4A schools.

We heard the same thing in the spring from Pisgah in the first round and blew them out 40-14.

They played ND the week prior. That was my point, not comparing Asheville to the team they are today.

That being said, ND isnt overwhelmingly talented and can't really afford to overlook anyone. That's the players and coaches, though. Fans can talk mess all day long and it adds up to a whole lot of nothing :)

To be fair, I am in no way predicting a West win, it was more responding to the "no doubt of a ND win" comment. West is easy to look over when glancing at their record, but they have a QB who will be playing somewhere on Saturdays who they were missing for half the season. That same QB has thrown for nearly 1600yds in the last 5 games. The leading WR committed to play baseball at NCSU after his Freshman year and with 3 baseball seasons left, may never see a collegiate field, he's that good of an athlete all around.

West is a talented team who had a tough schedule and some very bad COVID/injury breaks along the way. They aren't Pisgah or Asheville but are very well capable of winning this game. It isn't likely, but they're not the typical 3 win team, not from what I have seen anyway.

Tuscola got screwed. They won 3 more games and beat WH but are stuck at home because of RPI. Just like OG and CD got overtaken by Ledford despite beating them lol. I'm sure they'll fix it more in the future... Personally I think it should be 1 and 2 seeds from conference, then wildcards. At least then it wouldn't be as egregious. Jmo.

Rumor is CD and Ledford both have key injuries with their best players out. Anyone confirm this?
