Overly harsh. The I told you so moment is hayn sucks. I personally think the 3rd assistant choice was still lazy, but at least there's a shot at better results.

This may be true but our two best seasons came after Young left, and his two Fairfield teams have been... poor.I think the elephant in the room is that Jay Young was a stud as the third assistant in many ways. No one will match him esp with developin bigs.
You are trying to deter legitimate discussion with your exaggeration.
By all accounts Pike os admitting Hayn was a mistake with his actions this off season, which many people here at the time rightly questioned the move, and there is no good reason to avoid discussing who he’s replacing him with and why.

In his 2nd year of a major 4-5 year rebuild, Fairfield had a great finish and made it to the championship game of the MAAC tournament. This may be true but our two best seasons came after Young left, and his two Fairfield teams have been... poor.
Now of course we could have made the tournament or done even better with Young still here, so this isn't proof of anything. But I don't think we can say for sure that Young was special as an assistant.
What if he's great at development and just not an ace recruiter? He can be a great guy without being the guy to take our recruiting and current team to the next level.
I don’t think anyone is insulting him personally (at least I hope not). It’s just homerism to say that, as one of the 3 top assistants, he was a great (not okay) hire. We’re at an inflection point and we need 3 top notch coaches/recruiters.
It’s posts in rebuttal referencing personal experiences with him and hypothetical questions about his development that manufacturer the drama. And it really is exhausting. What if he's great at development and just not an ace recruiter?
Some parts of this fanbase just look to manufacture drama at every turn.
Its fkng exhausting
(Btw...just replying to the last post...not saying you are doing the above)
Agree on Young...he was a coaching studHe might be. It’s good that he’s still on staff because we need someone to coach bigs. I do think Young is a better developer but that’s just personal opinion. Hopefully Thompson is a stud recruiter for the good of the program at the end of the day.
He was the lead recruiter for Braeden Moore. The 6'8 shooter who may have a current top 3 of Rutgers, Nebraska and Wisconsin. He would be a huge pickup.Steve Hayn is a great guy. He did get us connected with several recruits. I cannot believe how harsh a couple of you have been who most likely have never met him or even know him. He has always been so gracious to me when I have spoken to him and I saw him at over 20 practices when he was an assistant. It is easy to criticize people but I feel it is way off base.
Sorry...missed thisIt’s posts in rebuttal referencing personal experiences with him and hypothetical questions about his development that manufacturer the drama. And it really is exhausting.
He was hired without a great recruiting resume. People questioned the hire. Pikiell replaces him soon after with a younger coach who is thought to be better recruiting on the road given his connections. There is no drama here. It’s a good decision to relieve him of his road recruiting responsibilities.
That's technically true but Thompson was a grassroots/AAU coach so he has recruiting experience from that side of things. He was Geo Baker's AAU coach. Ben Asher on the other hand did not have that experience, which would make him a very weird pick.
Pikiell obviously wants to work with guys he knows and trusts versus bringing in a new voice. It is what it is. I don't think it's "taking the easy way out" so much as a preference he has. And he's not going to start doing things radically differently after being good enough to make the tournament two straight seasons.
I have my own thoughts on assembling a coaching staff but I think this is one area where I'll defer to the results rather than the process. There's a lot of culture building and behind-the-scenes stuff that can't really be fairly measured or evaluated.
