I think the elephant in the room is that Jay Young was a stud as the third assistant in many ways. No one will match him esp with developin bigs.
This may be true but our two best seasons came after Young left, and his two Fairfield teams have been... poor.

Now of course we could have made the tournament or done even better with Young still here, so this isn't proof of anything. But I don't think we can say for sure that Young was special as an assistant.

I think everyone is looking at this way too hard. Shoes moved on, which actually took a few seasons longer than I thought it would. He was essentially an admin and could not go on the road. Asher got a chance to be a true assistant, so he jumped on it. All we really did was just flop TJ with Hayne with regards to their ability to assist off campus. That’s all. Most people on the board don’t know TJ, but he is known as someone who relates extremely well with players and is a good recruiter. And everyone here hates on Hayne but he was the door opener with several top recruits. The guy is a great talent evaluator.

You are trying to deter legitimate discussion with your exaggeration.

By all accounts Pike os admitting Hayn was a mistake with his actions this off season, which many people here at the time rightly questioned the move, and there is no good reason to avoid discussing who he’s replacing him with and why.

I think you might be using the word legitimate a bit loosely...lol

“By all accounts?” You mean some people on a message board? Because I haven’t seen any journalists or insiders say that. It’s a good move but I don’t think it’s a huge, conspiracy-laden deal worth continually questioning.

In his 2nd year of a major 4-5 year rebuild, Fairfield had a great finish and made it to the championship game of the MAAC tournament.

Steve Hayn is a great guy. He did get us connected with several recruits. I cannot believe how harsh a couple of you have been who most likely have never met him or even know him. He has always been so gracious to me when I have spoken to him and I saw him at over 20 practices when he was an assistant. It is easy to criticize people but I feel it is way off base.

He can be a great guy without being the guy to take our recruiting and current team to the next level.

I don’t think anyone is insulting him personally (at least I hope not). It’s just homerism to say that, as one of the 3 top assistants, he was a great (not okay) hire. We’re at an inflection point and we need 3 top notch coaches/recruiters.
What if he's great at development and just not an ace recruiter?

Some parts of this fanbase just look to manufacture drama at every turn.

Its fkng exhausting

(Btw...just replying to the last post...not saying you are doing the above)

It’s posts in rebuttal referencing personal experiences with him and hypothetical questions about his development that manufacturer the drama. And it really is exhausting.

He was hired without a great recruiting resume. People questioned the hire. Pikiell replaces him soon after with a younger coach who is thought to be better recruiting on the road given his connections. There is no drama here. It’s a good decision to relieve him of his road recruiting responsibilities.

He might be. It’s good that he’s still on staff because we need someone to coach bigs. I do think Young is a better developer but that’s just personal opinion. Hopefully Thompson is a stud recruiter for the good of the program at the end of the day.
Agree on Young...he was a coaching stud

The sense I always got was that Knight was the ace recruiter and that Hobbs was no slouch either. The 3rd guy was always more of the coaching guru (young and then Hayn)...which is why I didntt go bananas over this move as Thompson and Hayn both still on staff (as you point out)...though I see and appreciate the potential net positive

I feel like Pike and co have won more than their fair share of recruiting battles so I never worried about it...

That said, excited to see what Thompson can do as Knights not gonna be here forever

He was the lead recruiter for Braeden Moore. The 6'8 shooter who may have a current top 3 of Rutgers, Nebraska and Wisconsin. He would be a huge pickup.

And, I'm pretty sure that no one here knows his value as a developer of players on the roster.

Sorry...missed this

I am calling 1000% BS on anyone saying Hayn isn't a good guy (I forgot the adjective used by kyk). If someone wants to say he isn't an effective recruiter, have at it. We can all objectively grade him on that

But the made up story about him not being a good guy, and personal/personable is a LIE. A complete fabrication.

And if you don't believe me, go ask any of the press guys who interact with him

My only point is the constant made up BS to support ones point. Like who is stupid enough to believe Eugene left because Kwasi was schooling him in practice??? Could that have been true (that he was getting schooled?)...sure. but if Eugene was afraid of that, why would he go to Oregon which has more talent on their roster than us?

That's the ******** that I am referring to that is exhausting

That's technically true but Thompson was a grassroots/AAU coach so he has recruiting experience from that side of things. He was Geo Baker's AAU coach. Ben Asher on the other hand did not have that experience, which would make him a very weird pick.

Pikiell obviously wants to work with guys he knows and trusts versus bringing in a new voice. It is what it is. I don't think it's "taking the easy way out" so much as a preference he has. And he's not going to start doing things radically differently after being good enough to make the tournament two straight seasons.

I have my own thoughts on assembling a coaching staff but I think this is one area where I'll defer to the results rather than the process. There's a lot of culture building and behind-the-scenes stuff that can't really be fairly measured or evaluated.

I was saying that about demoting hayn.
