What does "recruiting assistant" mean? Is that an assistant coach or just whatever Shoes Vetrone's role was? Why does Carino mention he'll be working alongside Hobbs and Knight and doesn't mention Hayn? Confused.

It means, I assume, he and Hayn switched spots. You can only have 3 guys out recruiting plus the head coach.

Why would Asher leave for Youngstown State of all places? Was it a much better opportunity or was he passed over at Rutgers?

Correct. But it appears he was also passed over at Rutgers given an Assistant gig was available and it went to Thompson.
Would be pretty rare for a guy like him to go from student manager to Big Ten assistant in like 10 years. Wouldn't really want a guy with no recruiting experience and no notable playing experience out on the road recruiting for us tbh.

“passed over” is a weird phrase when it seems like Hayn and Thompson was just a 1 to 1 switch.

For all we know Coach Pike may have encouraged him to pursue the YSU job. They've had an opening on their staff for at least three weeks so he might have accepted that job a while ago, which might be why it has taken a while before someone reported that Vetrone is definitely headed to St. John's. Background checks are taking longer due to covid.

Has RU put out a press release yet?

Why couldn’t Asher and Hayn have the 1 to 1 switch? Hence it appears Pike chose Thompson over Asher. Call me surprised.

It means he will be a full time assistant coach and can go on the road to recruit.

Pikiell took the easy way out. Not surprised though. So essentially what pikiell did was hire a guy with zero recruiting experience to start recruiting at the big 10 level and people think it was the right move or a told you so moment.

That's technically true but Thompson was a grassroots/AAU coach so he has recruiting experience from that side of things. He was Geo Baker's AAU coach. Ben Asher on the other hand did not have that experience, which would make him a very weird pick.

Pikiell obviously wants to work with guys he knows and trusts versus bringing in a new voice. It is what it is. I don't think it's "taking the easy way out" so much as a preference he has. And he's not going to start doing things radically differently after being good enough to make the tournament two straight seasons.

I have my own thoughts on assembling a coaching staff but I think this is one area where I'll defer to the results rather than the process. There's a lot of culture building and behind-the-scenes stuff that can't really be fairly measured or evaluated.

The I told you so moment is hayn sucks. I personally think the 3rd assistant choice was still lazy, but at least there's a shot at better results.

Good lord, Pike could poach Duke's top assistant and the number 1 recruit in the country and some of you would find a way to complain about it.

You are trying to deter legitimate discussion with your exaggeration.

By all accounts Pike os admitting Hayn was a mistake with his actions this off season, which many people here at the time rightly questioned the move, and there is no good reason to avoid discussing who he’s replacing him with and why.

I think the elephant in the room is that Jay Young was a stud as the third assistant in many ways. No one will match him esp with developin bigs.

Personally, I would 100% endorse hiring Duke's top assistant or any other brother/uncle/AAU coach connected to a top recruit.

Who is the top uncommitted 2022/2023 player?
Hire his "handler".
