Maybe I’m confused about all these rules, but how does whatever the Big East votes on have anything to do with Pitino?
LSU started the ball rolling between football and taking players clearly prohibited by the rules and guidance effective or provided to date. Luis was the basketball move and I don’t recall the specifics of football.
But these conference votes/rules do not trump the NCAA. Ultimately the NCAA controls, as I understand it.
The foreign kids that SJU has are similar to foreign kids others have and if any of them were on a G-league roster, other teams have similar situations (like the Providence kid who was with the Knicks G league last year or the Brazilian kid we tried to bring in the door)
So what am I missing?
There's 3 issues.
1 - Players who have left college, entered the draft process and played in NBA Summer League and/or G League.
2 - Players from Class of 22 looking to play a 5th year.
3 - Foreign pros who meet the age requirements of NCAA
NCAA will continue to attempt to block players from 1 & 2. Pitino has signed multiple 5th year players who were deemed ineligible by the NCAA rules. Keyshawn Hall violates both 1 & 2. Pitino Jr. also has some 5th years which the NCAA is fighting on appeals in the courts. Providence has the kid who played with the Knicks.
Seton Hall and others are trying to follow the NCAA's guidance and gave up on their G-League guy and have not entered the 5th year market. It's an absolute mess because we will ultimately be screwed if the NCAA is forced to allow the exceptions from category 1 and 2.
This is a test of the new Big East commissioner on his first days in office. Will he make a ruling similar to B10 and SEC? More likely he stalls knowing we have some time before basketball begins and we should get answers from football quicker.
