Pitino is not going to like this. I don’t think he has any marginal NBA/ G League/ 2 way guys on his roster but it felt like he was the BE coach pushing the envelope the most.

I would ask

We are LSU and we gave you (kiffen) 50 mil nil roster..you are the de facto president of the university and AD and the Governor is your right hand man

And we absolutely “need” a TE that couldn’t even sniff a roster spot with the Cleveland browns

How is that possible

So I guess our new Commissioner is afraid of pissing off Pitino.
Maybe I’m confused about all these rules, but how does whatever the Big East votes on have anything to do with Pitino?

LSU started the ball rolling between football and taking players clearly prohibited by the rules and guidance effective or provided to date. Luis was the basketball move and I don’t recall the specifics of football.

But these conference votes/rules do not trump the NCAA. Ultimately the NCAA controls, as I understand it.

The foreign kids that SJU has are similar to foreign kids others have and if any of them were on a G-league roster, other teams have similar situations (like the Providence kid who was with the Knicks G league last year or the Brazilian kid we tried to bring in the door)

So what am I missing?

SEC can’t even control its own member schools as local judges in Louisiana and Texas keep defying the league for the benefit of their state schools.

They are all professionals now.

I agree with you there should be clear guardrails and rules, but the NCAA has made a mess of the situation.

The Big East doesn’t have football so some of the immediate concerns for those power 4 leagues aren’t really relevant to the BE. Especially when these conference-specific rules likely mean nothing and are more symbolic than anything else.

What is there for the Big East to study and why is more time needed? Pros should not be playing college sports. It really is that simple.
College sports is now pro sports

College sports are now pro sports pure and simple. Student athletes are now extinct. 😰

There's 3 issues.

1 - Players who have left college, entered the draft process and played in NBA Summer League and/or G League.

2 - Players from Class of 22 looking to play a 5th year.

3 - Foreign pros who meet the age requirements of NCAA

NCAA will continue to attempt to block players from 1 & 2. Pitino has signed multiple 5th year players who were deemed ineligible by the NCAA rules. Keyshawn Hall violates both 1 & 2. Pitino Jr. also has some 5th years which the NCAA is fighting on appeals in the courts. Providence has the kid who played with the Knicks.

Seton Hall and others are trying to follow the NCAA's guidance and gave up on their G-League guy and have not entered the 5th year market. It's an absolute mess because we will ultimately be screwed if the NCAA is forced to allow the exceptions from category 1 and 2.

This is a test of the new Big East commissioner on his first days in office. Will he make a ruling similar to B10 and SEC? More likely he stalls knowing we have some time before basketball begins and we should get answers from football quicker.

1 - Players who have left college, entered the draft process and played in NBA Summer League and/or G League. I say should not be eligible theoretically but for this past/current year, many thought they'd have no shot at another year in college so might have to make an exception for them if see no. 2 below.

2 - Players from Class of 22 looking to play a 5th year. I say no to this, the rule wasn't in place until after college athletics was done for the year. It may suck but those were the rules. Class of 2021 didn't get a 5th year either. It also would not be fair to far more players who chose their current situation based on no 5th year. Would be even tons more chaos if the NCAA gave in now.

3 - Foreign pros who meet the age requirements of NCAA I say no, they were paid professionals and shoud not be allowed to play college basketball. If you allowed them, why couldn't someone who played a year or 2 in the NBA not be allowed back?

Right so the 5 in 5 guys that various BE teams recently snapped up are the ones in the limbo. They are ineligible based on NCAA rules but various courts have challenged that and there is ongoing litigation.

And I didn’t realize the Providence kid Pate played that extensively in the G-league. Although I’m not sure why that matters because multiple teams had G-leaguers clear last season.

I’m with you. I think none should be eligible. But I also don’t think the NCAA can backtrack on anything now or it would be unfair to teams and players, except for the 5 for 5 guys who were never eligible to begin with I believe.

It matters cause ever allowing it was dumb. Even humans in charge of college sports can live and learn.

Part of me feels the BE should just go rogue..when has the ncaa/B10/SEC ever done anything that helps us?

We should come out and say all players welcome..screw eligibility and they Big 4 hypocrisy and go on the attack
