This is not a good offensive football team right now. They will continue to struggle until they all jive together. The RB’s all look pretty decent to be a bunch of freshmen. That position has definitely improved as the season has progressed after KH left. While not a strength in this offense, they haven’t been the reason for stagnant play. The WR group is still struggling to grasp the concept in this offense but there are some shining moments mixed in amongst the head scratchers where it looks like they’re running the wrong routes or they choose the wrong option when they have an option route. While the position group is littered with players from freshmen to seniors, they’re all new to this offense. The OL is continuing to miss blocks and at times it looks like one of them or more just take plays off and a defensive player runs right by them and they stand looking dumbfounded when it could be as simple as the OL leader (usually the C) needs to do better at calling out signals for assignments pre-snap. It appears that a DL switches his gap and the OL just doesn’t adjust their assignments. Then other plays, the OL is giving the QB all the time in the world. The QB is too slow with his reads sometimes. That happens with a freshman. Any fan expecting a freshman QB to come to State and be able to read the game at SEC speed and make decisions in the game is kidding themselves. He’s not Johnny Football 2.0. Hell, even 2 made mistakes but he had NFL caliber receivers running routes. State has no WR on the team that screams NFL draft yet but there are some young guys that show that potential. He will get better as the game slows down for him.
As for Moorhead and Co, sure they had a chance at winning this game had they been here. KH would have made a difference in this game had he been there to enjoy his senior day festivities. Shrader likely could have done a decent job as well. However, comparing Leach’s offense to Moorhead’s doesn’t work. Moorhead allowed his QB to tuck it and run if he had nowhere to throw it. That’s not happening with Leach. Leach doesn’t want his QB running it and teaches to not run the ball. Compare the two offenses with a freshman QB where one allows QB runs and the other doesn’t. The results will be different. It’s life and growing pains in a system.
It’s looking more and more like Leach was right to tell fans to go find another team. Fans are ridiculous. They act as if their livelihoods depend on the outcome of these games when they don’t. Unless the fan is betting on the games, the outcomes are meaningless other than fabricated emotional ties. And if a fan is betting on games to make a living where they have an emotional tie to one team, it would prob be a good idea to go seek out help.
