A parent's worst nightmare. I have a 19 year old daughter and I can't tell you how many nights I've laid awake worrying about where she was.
Been there, done that. It never gets easy.

I eat lunch in Brooklyn, Iowa a few times a month. It was surreal to be that close to the investigation. National news was swarming last time I was there. Made it hard to stomach eating lunch. People had thousands of signs made, over 300k reward, and they were checking hog confinement pens. sickening. Makes you want to microchip your children.
Just like the Sydney Loofe case in Nebraska. Once the young woman is missing for more than about two days, you start to doubt she will ever been seen alive.
Hopefully the person/people responsible for this will be quickly caught and appropriately punished.

Yes, unfortunately, the longer this went on, the less likely it was she would be found alive. We live in a very dangerous world these days. Mental illness, lack of respect for human life, drugs everywhere and you have a disaster waiting. By all accounts this seemed like a quaint, small hometown that many of us from Nebraska grew up in. You can never be too careful.

I don't think they ever did find that news reporter from northwest Iowa who disappeared 10-15 years ago. There are some sick people out there.
Jodi Huisentru sp? is her name from mason city.. weird story and alot of rumors went around from that one.. it is crazy the world we live in.. prayer is the least we could do for the family but i believe its the greatest thing we can do
The weird thing is, we don't. The rate of violent crime has been dropping steadily since 1992. The crime rate is back down to where it was in 1970. The way violent crime is categorized and reported in the statistics may have changed over the years, but generally we are safer than we were 30 years ago.
I do think social media, smart phones, 24/7/365 news cycle has made this stuff much more public than before. People are more aware of it. So we don't let our kids bike to the park unattended, where we used to do it ourselves in the 80's. Child molesters and killers were out there. I had a morning paper route in Lincoln when John Joubert was killing them in Omaha.
Sad to hear this. Iowa doesn't suck today.
It don't get much rougher then that, Lord be with her. I bet they find the person. watching the forensic files it's amazeing how they track criminals down these days

I worked in the area back then and I found out after the fact that I had driven within a few hundred feet of one of the boy's bodies that he had killed right before they found him. Joubert was a sensationally sick bastard. The things he did to those kids should have precluded him even getting a trial. IF I remember correctly I think they caught him by somebody discovering him trying to abduct their child.
A long time ago, but my recollection is that he was casing a Papio elementary school before kids were there one morning. A teacher noticed and I think made eye contact. I think he actually went into the school and threatened or tried to threaten the teacher, or maybe not. Either way, I believe the teacher promptly gave the police a description of the car and he was pulled over soon after that. I believe he had rope in his car that matched rope used in one or both prior abduction killings and other evidence, I think. Dad was working for the school district at the time, and I know Sheriff Thomas told the administration very soon after they had stopped him that there was no doubt he was the one.
Not a shock that they didn't find her alive. But my heart sank this morning when I heard it on the news all the same. Just wasn't expecting it.

I was a kid that same age in Papio when he kidnapped Walden and Eberle. He was caught when he tried to force his way into a Bellevue daycare before it opened. The tiny lady working forced him out and then miraculously memorized his license plates. They came back to a repair shop, and it was a loaner to Joubert who had his car in the shop. His car had tons of evidence in it. They interviewed him that night and he confessed in about five minutes. Dude was sick.

Great point, Violent crime stats have plummeted and with a smaller news cycle in the 80s you likely wouldn't have heard of a case like this unless you watched unsolved mysteries or america's most wanted. Sadly mental health services ebb and flow with politics as does the amount a state wants to spend rehabilitation. I suppose there really isn't an answer for a sick man looking to hurt someone.

“Undocumented” immigrant is the correct term according to Yahoo News. Heinous crimes are committed by both legal and illegal residents, but the fact that this monster was even here is complete B.S. Enough already.

So sad, was holding hope she might still be alive somewhere. After 48 hours the odds of someone being found alive drops drastically. This will definitely help the cause in boarder security and building the wall. I believe immigration helped build this county. Most of us came from immigrants at one point in our family history. However, things need to change. We should not be a free all you can eat buffet for people looking to take advantage of the system. Or in this situation, harm or kill people.
Feel extra bad for the family. This was a national story when she disappeared, now they are going to have to go through the greiving process while the entire nation uses their dead daughter as fuel to discuss politics.

It’s not political. It’s factual. With all due respect, the fact that we are all immigrants is completely irrelevant. What is relevant is the crime was committed by someone living in the U.S. illegally. That’s simply a fact of this case.

This is a tragic case, period. I’m not going to try to pretend to understand how much pain the family is in.
A policy question: how many us citizens die at the hands of illegal immigrants each year? How much would building the wall cost? VS
How much are we willing to spend to reduce the 10,000 deaths per year due to drunk driving?????
I don’t have all the answers, but let’s not pretend that immigration is the root of all evils.
