We pull most of our best kids up to varsity. I do think after this year our talent level dips for 3 years then we’re going to be really loaded again
yeah was true with the old JV format but now all sophomores play varsity and while I've seen a special few freshman play varsity there's none this year but that may not be allowed anymore I don't know the rules the new format. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a school Mitchell's size to have a dip for a while if it happens I've been amazed how they've seemed just reload the last several years with the population size.

He's a hoss. Gage ran the ball good too. Chad had 103 yards rushing and Gage had 127.
well I was joking about the multiple positions he played then how good he ran the ball. kicked, punted (even made the tackle on the punt), RB ,LB , and kick return. But your right the whole backfield looked good looks like lost Duncan for a couple weeks at least through and Phillips hurt and sounded more serious.

Both should be back in a couple of weeks

My takeaways from game 1

Mitchell had some rust, but definitely looked the part last night. The line played great, on both sides of the ball. O line kept pressure off Turbyfill, and made holes for the backs, and the D line kept pressure on the qb all night, and would've had more than 2 sacks, if not for the no-call holding all night. Mitchell has a stable of backs this year. We should see 2 1500 yard rushers, and maybe 3 or 4 1000 yards rushers. #13 and #26 are a deadly duo on the ground, and #22, while just a junior, is good for 5 yards a carry. All very hard runners. The receiving core needs some work, but they ran their routes good, and Erwin played excellent pass coverage. That will likely be the fastest backfield Mitchell will see before a state championship appearance.

Erwin looked to be much improved from the last few years, although the scoreboard didn't indicate it. They had very good skills players, great speed downfield, and 2 hard nosed shifty rb's. QB play was pretty good too, although he seemed to fold under pressure. If their line play improves, then they could absolutely compete with Asheville or Reynolds for 1st or 2nd place. But, without the line improvement, they are solid 3rd.

All in all, it was a good road victory to open the season. Watauga in 2 weeks will be the big test for the Mountaineers. The Pioneers looked STRONG last night. But first, McDowell, who got a nice win in a barnburner last night, and will undoubtedly be looking to snap an 8 game losing streak to their little cousins up the mountain.

While he may have folded under pressure sometimes you definitely can give the QB any time he is very accurate threw a beautiful pass in the end zone to a well covered receiver, like you say if his line can improve with those quick receivers he could lite some teams up.
But I agree Mitchell had some rust but mid 2nd they started finding their stride and I agree better not over look McDowell next week.

Good win new Chad would help. Off subject. Check out this dirty hit in the Elizabethton Science Hill game. I know the kid from Elizabethton. My son played youth sports with him. He was cleared to go back in but they wouldn’t let him. His parents thought his nose might of been broke. The kid from SH was ejected.

Wow that was nasty. Was the game chippy before that? I didn't think there was really any sort of rivalry between the two...

Chad Giarrusso is an absolute stud. Looks like he packed on about 20lb of pure muscle since last year. A true old school fullback. He's dragging 3-4 defenders everytime he runs the ball.
I just hate this LeBron James Era we live in. Instead of putting in the work and helping changing the culture, just jump ship. The WHC has 2 teams that are no different from Winston Salem Prep or Mountain Island Charter. They are benefiting from transfers and recruitments. They know who they are. This is not hs football anymore. It's not I want to be the best, by beating the best. It has changed to I want to be the best, by getting the best players on one side and beat those who are left. It's sad really.

Well Mitchell gave Avery a 3 year starting QB so fair is fair🙃
But jump ship? That's implying that Avery had a chance to go to the playoffs or something this year if he had just stayed.
I don't know the backstory of his transfer but I believe he has potential of playing at least small college especially with his kicking so it would be my guess that maybe he was thinking that he might get more notice and offers at more football minded school like Mitchell.

I have heard that Averys new coach is a good one and is trying to right the ship. As far as college goes, don't see him going for an athletic scholarship (no matter where he plays) and let's not kid ourselves. Mitchell isn't turning out D1 athletes left and right. The kid just seen an easier road. Instead of putting the work in with a new staff he used the LeBron transfer portal. I just hate it for schools like Madison and Avery because they will lose their athletes to the 2 magnet schools of the WHC and that isn't a receipt to rebuild any hs program. Hs football shouldn't be about recruitment, bud sadly that's what it has become.

Well I don't believe Mitchell recruited him they had 3 of the 4 RB's coming back from last year. And I don't know for sure but I was told that was his reasoning but maybe someone else on here has some inside information on that but I didn't mention D1 I stated small college. Mitchell in recent years had a kicker get a scholarship at App state and he looks so far to have just a strong of a leg we'll see how the season goes but not everyone is looking for a D1 school anyway just one where they might get some scholarship money and an education like the 3 Mitchell QB's before Ben Young all went to Mars Hill.
I hope Avery can turn it around but from I've been told they still care more about basketball.

Avery got a great coach! Hopefully they will have some patience and let his system take place! But the transfer ruckus you’re commenting about has BEEN happening. Some transfers makes sense and in other cases don’t. But we aren’t in those kids shoes to judge the transfer. Although this bone has been picked with the SMC for awhile now. It’ll always be a controversy, and it doesn’t have to be D1. D2 is competitive as well. If you know football you should know this.

Hopefully he'll get the public support and enthusiasm he'll need.

Well, I for one Mitchell fan will agree with you about transfers.
Let me start by saying this has 0 to do with any current or past individuals or who has came to Mitchell or left Mitchell. Just an opinion of mine and mine alone.
I enjoy that “I grew up here and want to represent my community” attitude. Now I understand that there are times kids change schools due to parents/guardians moving for work/family purposes and that is an entirely different situation.
I also understand there are situations that are in the child’s best interest to change schools for a multitude of reasons.
I agree that if a school is actively recruiting that should not be taking place. However, I don’t see the current situation changing anytime soon. I do think for the next few years you will see a drop off in overall talent at Mitchell.
As far as the current individual that has been mentioned in this thread, he is an outstanding talent and I truly believe he will have a free education due to his kicking ability. Will the move to Mitchell help his chances, I don’t know, is that the only reason he is at Mitchell, I don’t know. Am I glad he is at Mitchell, well sure I am. I know that sounds as if I am talking out of both sides of my mouth, well maybe I am. But I have no idea what his situation is/was.
At the end of the day, I will support the kids at each school they represent. Doesn’t mean I pull for the school but for the kids.
Anyway I have rambled enough.

Transfers especially between Mitchell, Avery & Mtn Heritage is nothing new and has been going on for years for not just sports but different reasons. My oldest daughter who graduated in 2013 from Mitchell tried to get me let her transfer because Avery had a bigger better band going to more competitions but a boy in her class and band did transfer to Avery because they have an ROTC because he thought it would help him with his military goals after graduating.
Now I do agree there should be no recruiting going on which if you're caught doing that by the state it's a big fine but if a kid transfers for whatever reason that they and their parents believes helps him or her and it's within the states rules then that's their business.

Don't blame kids for wanting to transfer. Some schools have lot of politics in sports don't always play the best. No kid should be in that situation. Really don't know about the situation at avery , maybe the kid got tired of losing. I have no problem with kids that transfer.
