MLB does it constantly. It’s went down some, but it happens all the time. The average number of pitches for an MLB starter who goes 5+ innings, while declining, is still around 100. And that’s the average. But, to your point, it has declined some. However, part of the decline in average pitches per game, by starter, is also being driven down by teams like Tampa Bay who are using “openers”. Plus the strong emphasis now placed on bullpens. So, while I agree with you that I wish we threw them a little less, let’s be fair about it, and not skew the discussion as if we are some crazy outlier. Heck, Corbin’s entire recruiting reputation is based around him taking care of pro prospects, and he’s throwing his guys just as much. And the reason he is, is because like Ole Miss, his bullpen isn’t great. MSU’s bullpen is, which you’re 100% right, that will help y’all come postseason play.
It’s also very easy to say “I understand the need to win” when it’s not your team throwing the guys. These SEC games are super important. And when it’s a one run game in the 6th and your starter is cruising, it’s not an easy decision to run pull him. But it is made easier if you pull him for Preston Johnson and Landon Sims.
The big thing I takeaway from this is it appears that Lemonis and Fauxhall (sp?) have recruited more towards the modern game and made sure to build a deep bullpen. And kudos to them for that, it’s certainly going to be a competitive advantage for MSU down the stretch and come postseason play.
