No pizzazz but that’s not a bad job, especially this year. Supposed best QB prospect in decades, very good rookie RB in James Robinson that is a really good. Decent weapons in Chark, Shenault, and Cole with tons of cap space in a division that is annually pretty winnable.

Pretty surprising. It’s probably the hardest job in the NFL, IMO. I know Lawrence can change things quickly, but it’s still going to be challenging to get free agents down there. I don’t think Khan has ever really been sold on North Florida, and they’ve returned the favor.

I think JAX was able to buy a pretty good defense a few years back. They can probably do it again. The weapons will be there on offense. They will need to do well shoring up the O-Line.

Is Meyer some offensive genius? Hes been out of coaching for a while and has never had a gig like this. Hasnt played with a real talent deficit since Utah. Seems like a big risk when you probably could've had your pick of current NFL OCs or retreads, but fwiw JAX definitely won the press conference today. Maybe that's enough to swing a couple of free agents.

Per Shefty, the Jags have the #1 overall pick, 11 draft picks and $100M in cap space. Yes, 100M in cap space.

What makes an NFL job more difficult than another one? It’s not baseball. The only thing being in a larger market does is buy you more media coverage. Jacksonville has never had an issue getting free agents and no state tax helps Florida teams.

Ownership. Same thing that makes one business worse than another.

What has this owner done to make you think he’s not a good owner? From what I can tell, he’s put money in the stadium. He’s gone out and hired good coaches. Marrone was thought to be a good hire at the time. He did take them the AFC championship. And now he’s willing to put money out there for Meyer. From what I can tell, he’s giving the team all the tools they need to be successful.

I would say Dallas is a much tougher job with worse ownership.Just because Jerry can pay someone doesn’t mean he should. If they are ponying up for Urb and he actually said yes then ownership isn’t a problem.

All of the things that make Urban Meyer a fantastic football coach are geared to the college game. Recruiting. Player control/Motivation. Advantages with budgets.

None of that exist in the NFL game. If Lawrence is good, he will do enough to keep the job. But this has Saban 2.0 written all over it.

Im not rooting against him, but I would absolutely bet against this being successful for the long run. And when he fails at this, he will come back to a blue blood college gig (USCw or ND), win a natty, and then retire a winner forever

Saban never had the most important position in the game filled out, he had a Randy Moss-less Culpepper, which was good for me because I'm a Saints fan but also bad for me because Saban broke college football more than ever.

The no-QB excuse is valid for Saban, but the salary cap doesn’t give a flying 17 who you are or which players you want. Urban was great in college cause his teams had the best players and he had precise control over them. He will be in neither of those situations in Jax.

It’s unreal to think how much that one decision changed football in the south for nearly a quarter century dependent on how long Saban stays.

It doesn’t seem to work out most of the time for these ultra successful college coaches but you feel like he’s probably walking in the best situation possible. Tons of cap space, lots of high draft picks and the ability to draft a generational talent. Who knows long term how it turns out but I bet over next 4-5 years he’s probably pretty successful.

An elite QB covers up a lot of problems.

I tend to agree. When Khan bought the team, everyone expected them to pull up and move. Obviously an owner can’t just do that. Maybe just me, but I’ve always liked the Jaguars and what they’ve done with what they have. Definitely not an embarrassment IMO.

ed: With Meyer as HC, presumably TL as the draft pick...I find that extremely intriguing. It will get a lot of eyeballs. Including mine. Jacksonville has most likely gotten a few Sunday/Monday night games in ‘21 overnight.

It’s hard to really think of a bad ownership group in the NFL, in terms of the owners commitment to spend money and field a good team and facilities. Washington is the only one that comes to mind with ownership that seems less than ideal.

NFL certainly does not have the problem MLB has. MLB has owners right now that just flat out refuse to spend money to improve the team. The Ricket family with the cubs are actively tearing that roster down because they claim to be short on money but they have also announced a big expansion to Wrigley where they are adding a sports book, which looks awesome by the way. But my point is a lot of MLB owners seemed to be focused on the overall value of their asset where NFL owners do seem to be trying to win and not solely focused on the long term value of the franchise.

Will agree with the folks that said they were surprised. I love Robinson, toted me a few weeks in fantasy out of no where, and I love their younger receivers. They get Lawrence and Meyer that has got to be a huge up grade in terms of coach and qb, no? No offense to the mustache.

I was answering in generalities since the question was asked in general terms. With that being said, they do have the #1 overall pick for a reason and they have all those picks because a couple good players wanted out. Maybe they were malcontents, but this is the NFL. You have to take care of your stars. With that being said, what has he done to prove he’s a good owner?

He also owns a rasslin promotion so he can't be THAT bad.

Why shouldn’t he? It’s his money. If I was an NFL owner, I’d do the same. Just like playing fantasy football, only he gets to do it with real people.

Of course he should be allowed to; it's his team. The question is whether it's a good idea or not. Recent history and logic indicates that it is not.

Therefore, if you're a coach with your pick of the litter and making pro/con lists about each job, considering a meddlesome owner to be a con is reasonable.

However, that recent quote aside, I don't think Khan really has that reputation.

Good point, but Cali is a nice place to live if you are Uber Rich. The Chargers are a much better team to coach, more talent to win now.
Jax job will not be easy to win there.

Cali may be paradise on earth, but there are a lot of places that are nice, and for somebody making $6M a year as an employee, they're going to pay probably >$600k in state income taxes just for the portion of their money in the highest bracket. Compare that to a no-income tax like Florida, and even assume you pay $100k more in other taxes that are higher than California because of no income tax, and you can still do some really nice trips to California each year for $500k.

That's the only positive I can see, but for some reason this board thinks he's Art Rooney.

He owns a AEW and he tanked. What else is there to talk about?

This is a good lesson in job searching/economics. Chase income first, then when incomes are the same, look into COL. And COL is way more than state income tax.

I've always thought it comical to see people pump this state or that state because of no income tax. It's like they don't have the brain capacity to consider the other factors because they aren't QUITE as readily available as a 2 second google search. A lot of this looney-ness goes on in the Memphis/Desoto debate.

Can you explain the cost of living differences between Memphis and Desoto county?
