Pope deserves a 3rd year with a healthy team to see what he has learned and can do. Be fair. All these other top coaches got years to build their deal. Hurley. Coach K, Pitino, Wright, Oats, and on and on.
CMP inherited zero along with a disgruntled fanbase whose frustration with the prior coach has bled on him. Same as coming off probation with zero players.
Damn the guy went to the Sweet 16 in his first year. None of those other coaches did the same. Crippled by injuries in his first 2 seasons. Not 1 but multiple season ending injuries but he’s stayed positive. Still swinging.
Has to find his Bowie Mashburn or Wall to take it to another level. Get guys who fit his system and message. Be selective. 1 or 2 freshmen. Mature coachable hungry portal guys.

Does enough is the problem with KY basketball. Too many fans seem to be happy with just doing enough.
I remember when KY basketball was great.
It will never be great under Pope.
But for you people that like doing just enough to get by, congratulations. You have your guy.
^ This kind of post is exactly why I feel vindicated when I say message board posts do not affect change in the administration. I would keep my mouth shut about that, if it weren't for constantly being told I'm the reason UK basketball is having a down period...for what? Trying to enjoy something I can't control? Next time someone calls me arrogant for being outspoken about my opinion, understand I get blamed on the daily for the team's issues.
Message boards don’t change anything. They’re a place for people to discuss different things.
You’re trying to give yourself way too much credit for saying people blame you for UK basketball sucking.
Mark Pope is currently to blame for that.
Let's keep the blame with Pope and not the fans who are trying to make the best of things. I'm frustrated with Pope just like you.
Yea, if you want this program to keep sinking further into the depths. The guy belongs nowhere near this program outside of his contributions as a player, for which we are all truly grateful for
I was on vacation last week and literally overheard a Gator fan say "yeah it's nice to win the title and all, but we're a football school. I want to see us win in that." Word for word.
The guy is 40. He can be here 10 years and still go and have a nice nba career.

I say you make him the highest paid coach by a lot with a smaller buyout. If we want to win we are going to need to make our target the highest paid coach. It may be a seemingly ridiculous number but 15 million a year for a coach like golden is what it’s going to take to bring in the elite type coach we want. Barney hasn’t been willing to pay these guys. I mean look at pope he is one of the top 5 or so highest paid coaches. You may be able to get golden for 12 mil a year. We can scream no ridiculous contract bc that’s what’s it going to take.
I will just point this out one more time. We have not had a coach go and win a natty who didn’t make an elite 8 in their first season as coach. Let’s say we make sweet sixteen this and next season. So 3 sweet sixteens for pope. Do you give him a 4th year? Because people push to retain pope we will be what we were last year and this: and btw we don’t compare our coach to these programs and their mindset at the time say ratface was hired at DUke. Pope has lost way too much to continue on sweet sixteen or not. Of pope decides he wants another year and we don’t make a title game pope will be run out and he won’t be welcomed back. In case you guys didn’t notice, we have zero new players coming in. Players are turned off by pope. It’s painfully obvious. He paid big for this roster and it’s been a mess. We’ve already gone 11 years with no final four and mark pope isn’t capable to get there so why keep him around? It only prolongs the suffering. Some folks around here understand this notion others I don’t think have a clue what’s made our bb program the all time greatest. And after reading those twitter replies it’s disgusting that our fanbase doesn’t demand better. What happened here? The last time we had a chance at a ff our fanbase took it out on rooferee, I mean we ran cal out for not coaching to standard. But bc Barney is successful at brainwashing you other guys want to continue on until we are irrelevant. Where’s the outrage about a 13-14 loss season? Pope will not get the right guys. Mid July some will be excited while others will see pope isn’t a guy who relates to specific demographics. When we see the roster is lacking going into next season then what. Too late.
I don’t think any coach with half a brain would come here. Not Golden, Hurley or anyone. His best friend Drew turned down coming here. He blamed it on his wife but he probably saw how restrictive we were operating and said No Thanks. Barnhart has completely destroyed our program. We operate under rules no other school in the country does. We give away sports revenue to the academic side. Almost no one does that. The nail in the coffin was Mitch’s JMI parachute. No high level coach will come and work under those restrictions. UK is dead my friend. Mitch killed her.
There’ll always be some elite coach willing to come here, even with the restrictions that have been applied. Not many schools can guarantee a title if you are a half decent coach. Kentucky is one of those schools.
Where were they in the last coaching search then?? Drew said no. Oats said I would not even interview there. Hurley said No. I’m sure they reached out to others and apparently got little to no response. Would you go work for a company that gives you half of what everybody else gets? Please don’t throw out that 23 million ish. It’s ********.
We haven’t won our league in forever. We have been an afterthought since NIL began. UCLA has more titles than anyone. No one wants to coach there. Kentucky will soon be irrelevant. Mitch will still be in his advisory job when we are Indiana basketball.

Comparing Pope being handed the FATTEST checkbook in all of college basketball to build a team vs. Rick Pitino coming to UK damn near 40 years ago for a team on probation is absurd and intellectually dishonest. He was given the biggest budget in college basketball this year to build a team and it was a f'n disaster. We're barely even making the tournament by the skin of our teeth and we'll finish the year 19-12. This is like the L.A. Dodgers spending $400 million on their roster and going like 72-90.
