In Tubby Smith. I know this was posted several days ago but Gary Parrish and Dan Wolken (both very involved in the Memphis scene)both said today the talks are very real and very serious. Yikes.

The question isn't Memphis' interest. The question is whether Tubby is truly serious, or is just looking for a big raise.

They were hoping for a big name, splashy hire. While he is a big name, he is 65. I loved Tubby but I would be very upset at this hire if I were a Memphis fan.

Not a terrible hire for them. Tubby will be able to hire some assistants with some recruiting ability. Decent local talent and regionally. Be pretty easy to get those 4 and 3 stars with potential. Let's be honest tubby coaches that well he does pretty good with that kind of talent. Might not be the most exciting system to watch but he will win more than he loses and if he keeps a few stars local here and there and gets the right assistants he may go dancing a few times

I'm loving this, and yes, he's definitely on the short list.

Memphis just doesn't have lots of options in 2016. If this were the metro teams, it would be a little different, but it's not.

If they are considering Tubby, it just proves that Memphis is a crap job and no one wants it. With the BIG12 blowing up, conference realignment happening in the next decade, and prestige all together? Memphis is no longer an attractive position at all.

It's an overrated fan base as well. They show up in big numbers when you win, disappear when you lose.

Tubby might be able to shag some recruits from the city if he hires Penny, and I've been told conflicting reports as to whether or not he even wants into coaching. Most think so, but some close to him say no. It would be a "meh" hire, and certainly not what memphis fans are looking for.

Also, the style of play is horrible, and Memphis fans like to run since the days of Calipari. Even Pastner tried to be quicker than Tubby.

Back in 2006/2007, I would debate people from memphis on who was better, Tubby or Cal. The irony runs like a river.....

Sounds about right. Steal some cash in Lubbock and then leave them with a mess to clean up.

Agree,I wouldn't think it would be a good move for Memphis or Tubby. He would still be better than Pastner but it is such a short term move that it not likely the right one

I have no ill will towards the man. I met him once and he was truly one of the most gracious people I've ever met. I wish him well if he lands in Memphis. Maybe he'll buy me a Dyer burger :)

I think Tubby would do very well at Memphis. Could just land the recruits in town and the city funnels its players to the school. So its a win win situation.

Lots of decent coaches in that vicinity goingfor the same recruits, Memphis, Miss St. Bama, UT etc

Certainly have to feel sorry for Memphis. They lost Coach Calipari; had to struggle through the Pastner years with great players and not coaching; and now looking at a future with Tubby Smith. Not sure it could get any worse for them.

What's even worse is that Saul will most likely be coming with Tubby. Just to give everyone an update on the progression Saul has made through the coaching ranks. He is currently the Director of Video Production at Texas Tech. Obviously slow playing it and waiting for just the right opportunity to make the leap to Director of Operations.

I get you hate Tubby but that's an unfair statement. Lubbock has always been a graveyard when it comes to basketball. At 65, I highly doubt Tubby is looking for a cash grab. What mess is he going to leave them with? He took them to the NCAA tourney.

Good lord. Back to your regular scheduled hating of Tubby Smith.

Nope, don't hate Tubby at all. Find him lazy and moves around too much. Sorry to burst your bubble. I don't "hate" anybody, but this is an opinion board and that's my opinion buddy.

That's fine. But if you're opinion is that if Smith takes the Memphis job he's going to leave a mess for Texas Tech than that's a short sited opinion. Texas tech has always been a bad program for basketball that has achieved very little success ever.

So why not just use them for a year or two and then move on. Right? Tubby has no allegiance to anybody. He's always looking for the next reveunue stream, and if lucky hire his sons. Sorry, Saul, it is what it is.

Probably would be a good move for both. Would Tubby play a more up tempo game at Memphis?

Lateral move for Memphis, I thought the idea was to move up. Tubby had a decent year in Texas, he might as well stay there.

Stayed at UK for 10 years.
Fired from Minnesota so he didn't have a lot f choice to leave there

Yup, no allegiance there. You can bemoan Tubby Smith for a lot of things but leaving Tech for Memphis isn't one of them. He's just another one of the countless coaches that got fired from somewhere and took a better opportunity a few years later.

They want penny to be his lead recruiter. Since is knows the area and coaches

If Penny is on the staff then Keelon has to go it would appear.

I asked around some interesting people and they all said the same thing. It would take a good pitch to get Penny to come aboard. I had the coaching aspect wrong. It wasn't that penny doesn't want to coach, it's that he wants to be a HC, and had some issues trying to coach with JP. I guess he'd take it.

This is wonderful. Tubby will be OK at memphis, but nothing spectacular. Memphis is dying a slow death.....very slow..........

Not entirely true

The city does push Memphis kids to UM, but it still takes recruiting to make it happen. Memphis AAU and high school recruiting is a hella grind. You have to work with the handlers and coaches to get anywhere with the players. It's not as simple as "play for Memmphis". But if you "pay", they'll play, sort of thing. Notice Pasnter was giving out jobs at the end.

Cal chose to go more national (in part because he could), due to the fact that he hated messing with everyone's hand out. Thaddeus Young is one of the only big time Memphis kids Cal wanted badly, and handlers won out sending him to GT because Cal wasn't playing the game.

If Cal won't play that game, will Tubby? And if Tubby doesn't, can he recruit at a decent enough level nationally to make them relevant. That's the million dollar question. If I were a Memphis fan, knowing that, I wouldn't be confident.

I would also add, with Keelon on staff, and Tubby not being known for recruiting, Memphis is about to be in a world of trouble. Essentially you've got

HC - Tubby: Not known for recruiting.
Keelon - Not a recruiter
**if Penny - Not a recruiter
Saul Smith - ?

:joy:

Go get them recruits Tubby....Hope you're ready to play AAU ball

Tubby is too good a man to go to that cesspool of agents, handlers and greedy family members that is Memphis basketball recruiting. He deserves better. As a mater of fact no one deserves that including the players.

Whatever his recruiting ability, Tubby Smith is a decent man. Wish him nothing but the best.

Apparently Texas Tech has countered with a 1 million dollar raise to keep Tubby according to their scout board.

[laughing]

If Memphis pays Tubby 3 million a year, they are morons. I don't care if you like Tuuby or not, every UK fan that's at least 23 years old knows and understands he's not worth that at all.

Perhaps, but i need a sit down with Coach Smith on the art of negotiating,[roll][roll]
