Guess that's why Nike kept the rights to that logo.

Commemorating Memphis State I suppose. Looks sharp. We would look bad *** with that logo.

I actually didn't realize I missed it that much until I see Memphis wearing it now. Their interlocking MSJ isn't exactly like ours was, but it looks damn good IMO.

It looks really bad. I'm glad they have the rights. It's buried where it belongs.

Their MSU doesn't look like 96-03 JWS ones. They actually used that one when we played them in 95 with our MSJ.

I appreciate that logo & the teams we had. But, I like our minimalist Banner M better.

As someone else said, to each his own. That interlocking MSU is quite frankly not very innovative or imaginative. I'm with this poster - I like the banner M much better and hope we stay with it.

Yes. I used to wish we'd go back to the MSU logo, but I don't even miss it now. The M-State one we have now looks great and it's who we are. Leave the old one in the history books.

In what parallel universe do you exist where you didn’t like the MSU interlocking logo. That will always be our best logo

I like current logo better. Emphasizes a brand strength. We are "STATE" in

college football.

Plus it looks better and is more unique than interlocking letters.

It's pretty cool that regional and national media on TV refer to us as just "state". Should probably continue to build on that.

Is any other team nationally referred to as just state?

That’s 17’ing beautiful man. Thanks for posting. The M-State logo we have now looks like a rip-off of Missouri, or Miami of Ohio, or Marshall, or any number of schools who have an M on their helmet.

Regionally? Yes. Nationally? No.

I have this conversation/argument with a few of my UGA friends all the time.

We are the only team/school in the SEC with State in their name save LSU; & they'll never go by anything other than that.

The one who always brings it up, does so just to rile me up. However, when I break it down for him he refuses to understand or capitulate on a rational level.

When meeting other SEC fans (most UGA fans can't name the teams in their own division let alone the conference) & I tell them I'm a State fan, they know.

I'm sure in Michigan, Colorado, NC, even Florida, etc., they regionally refer to teams as State.

Nationally, I don't know of one & if we can become known as the major one I'm all for it.

Any logo is better than the banner M. You could hand draw a dog taking a crap and it’d be better. It’s an academic team logo.

We have to fight Michigan State for use of MSU and State. I don't think any team will ever be able to claim State nationally as a brand.

Forgive my ignorance but Memphis State... junior college?

No it's Memphis State University. The guy posting is having an autocorrect or fat finger problem. Should be MSU.

ETA: or maybe there is something I am missing because multiple people keep posting MSJ.

To be clear, Nike doesn't own the rights to all MSU interlocking logos. They own the rights of the version of the logo we wore from 96 thru the end of Jackie's tenure. We could go back to our old MSJ logo anytime we want.

The logo Memphis wore is their old helmet logo from the 60s and 70s, and also not a design owned by Nike.

I personally dont see why folks are so passionate about this. I like the old interlocking logo, but I also like the M banner logo since they made it less blocky and more sleek during the Mullen era.

I have seen this conversation before but not sure that I've seen a clear answer to the specifics of what they "own". Did they develop a font? Is it an existing font + a specific color scheme? Would slight variations to the combination be an infringement to their logo?

Just curious.

"MSJ" refers to the visual effect of the crowded interlocking of the letters that makes the "U" look like a "J," especially on the Felker/Sherrill version, and somewhat on the Bellard and Sherrill "Nike" logos.

FSU does not refer to themselves as State. They have a unique mascot so they typically say Noles.

Being born in the same city as Michigan state, having family who are Michigan State grads and having been to games in East Lansing I can assure you they do not regionally referbto them as State. They refer to them as Sparty or The Spartans. They leave the name off. The B1G doesn’t really refer to any of their school names, instead they usually use the Mascot when naming a team

If I told anyone here that I’m a ‘State’ fan, they’d just pat me on the back and say “sorry man”
