I hope Maxey commits but stays in 2019. There is just no way a backcourt of Quade, Hagans, Quickley, Herro, Baker, & Maxey would work. Some of you saying “it doesn’t matter who starts, they will all play a ton” doesn’t make sense. There are a limited number of backcourt minutes in a game. Also, Cal tends to like to keep his best players on the court especially as the games get important.

Two guard spots for a 40 minute game is a total of 80 minutes. Quad was not happy with 26 minutes this year, so let’s say he drops to 25 minutes. That leaves 55 minutes. I can’t imagine two 5-Star recruits of Quickley and Hagans getting less that 20 minutes each. That leaves 15 minutes for Herro, Baker, and Maxey to share. Maybe Herro or Maxey play some SF, but then you have issues at playing time available at the 3/4/5.

I believe that Quad returning is a clear sign that at least one of Hagans/Maxey will not be on the 2018 squad. (I just hope that means they will be on the 2019 squad)

Then you are not a very good judge of basketball talent.

Incorrect.

You seem to think I’m talking about Tyrese Maxey when it was clear in my post I’m referring to Quade Green.

At least that’s what I hope.

Quade is slow and short, that can’t be fixed with experience for those acting like these two players are similar.

If you want to say that'll affect his pro prospects, fine. But it will have next to zero effect on his college game and what he can provide for us. 9 and 3 freshman year, injured. He absolutely proved he can play at this level.

Thankfully, Green choose to return, which will push Maxey to next year if he wants to play for us. 3 other freshman guards, we didn't need a 4th. Diminishing returns with that much talent.

A freshman Maxey is not needed to win the title. We will need him next season if he chooses to stay in 2019.

Not sure how a slow and too short Green put up similar numbers to Jalen Brunson as a frosh.
He can be shut down on offense because he can’t get his shot off against the better defenders and he is not a good defender, a liability on defense many times.

Too slow, cannot be fixed. Maybe he’ll benefit from the incoming players setting him up. He can shoot if he gets open but against good defenders he can be taken out. Not a big deal if he was a good defender but his defense is not good due to being short and slow for college. Coming back won’t fix the issues Quade has. Maxey has the physical attributes that would have been better for the team.

Fixed for what? He already proved he can play at this level. Is he ever going to be the berst PG in a given year of college ball? probably not. But he's certainl good enough to take us to a title.

We don't need Green to be an NBA-level point guard. He really just needs to play defense, hit shots, and play defense (which he stepped up tremendously later in the season, see: Alabama game).

Green has no insurmountable issues to fix for next year, and there's absolutely no guarantee that Maxey will provide more production than Green.

He’s not good on defense despite the one game you present as some kind of proof, he also had disruptive issues about playing. Averaging 9 points on a team that relied heavily on guard play due to poor interior play is also not impressive. I think the team would have been better off without him, you can feel otherwise.

Thankfully this isn't a place like Duke where we try and cast off players. Injured, freshman all around him, and still had plenty of forwards/in no way guard-heavy. If he puts in the effort, he'll be great next year.

If Maxey is determined to reclassify so that he can be in the 2019 NBA Draft (the same reason that Hagans is doing it) then I expect he will be attending a different school. There isn't playing time for both Maxey and Green next year.

I agree that Maxey probably doesn’t come now, but I think we’re definitely playing three guards when Johnson isn’t in.
