Was good of you to join the conversation Matt.
I know strong reading comprehension and context clues may not be your thing but if you just look around......Aw nvm I’m not gonna break it down for you.

Its also the media's fault as well......they refuse to call him out. Yesterday Kyle Tucker tried to say something about the future of the program and Cal just shot him down and Kyle shut up and took it......no you need to stay on his *** about it and tell him he makes 8 million a year to answer these hard questions.

Media are spineless anymore. Totally spineless.

Matt Jones also knocked it out of the park about the fans. We have to quit saying we want these kids gone. We’ll never get to where we want to be with that mindset. We all were frustrated with every player on this team at some point, but guess what? Kids improve and a light bulb goes on at some point in most cases. Look at Nick Richards, pj, quickley, every uk roster prior to Cal.

THIS!!!!! There was two moments this season that I jumped out of my seat and felt the passion I usually feel for UK basketball. Just two!! Both of those when Allen went off, not only because hes a Kentucky kid but more because of how hes been treated and to be honest every time he hit a shot it felt like a big F you to cal from the fanbase and I shouldn't have enjoyed it but i did. That in itself let's you know there is a fracture between fans and the program.

‘everyone has answers. Matt has never played or coached at a high level. Do you really think Cal does not all the reasons why this happened. Relax we will be back.

Well, considering CAL HIMSELF has openly said he had no idea what to do with this team. Then, yes, I think there's a chance his ego will not let him realize it was his own fault.

1. The KSR team has said these same things all along...so today's discussion is nothing new.
2. My dis-connect with KSR crew is 3 of them (Shannon is the lone one that isn't quite the Cal lover of the 4) list all kinds of Cal stuff they don't agree with (how the 5 star get a different rope than 4 star kids, Cal's talking down to fans, offensive approach feels stale, Cal has some buddy-buddy stuff with assistants going on, strange handling of injury reports (i.e he basically lies all the time) , roster unstable, don't use but 10-11 scholarships, press conferences statements make no sense, etc...) and then they state....but there is no other coach I'd want than Cal, or Cal has this job for as long as he wants it, etc...

I'm not saying Cal should be fired....but to have a pretty long list of issues with the coach/program makes little to no sense to then state "No other coach but Cal can do this job"...seems very illogical on some levels to me.

Same way my wife described Cal’s offense a couple months ago, stale. I laughed my *** off at that. Anyway, these points are dead on. The whole 5 star getting more rope is getting really old and annoying.

Matt blasted Cal over the Allen thing all year. Cal is frustrated with the fanbase, and he uses Allen as a pawn over it. The very first thing Cal said in the post game press conference was that Allen missed a screen. Matt said "THEY'VE ALL BEEN MISSING SCREENS. WE ARE 9-16. ALLEN SCORED 23 POINTS"

Matt was spot on. I'd recommend catching the podcast.
If you go back and look Miss. St ran to perfection a double screen twice to get #1 Molinar open for threes, with Allen guarding him, those were the daggers for the game, It looked like a coach running plays for his best shooter that made it very difficult for Allen or anyone to guard. That's great coaching by Howland, and something we saw very little of for our best shooters.

Wrong, the fanbase built Matt Jones not the other way around, its been there the whole time. He saw a thirst for UK info and to his credit put it in an entertaining and accessible format that was appealing. He has since used it to push his political agenda and promote himself and his endeavors. He speaks about his politics on his show, he appears on shows on MSNBC and Bill Maher pushing the liberal perspective and he wrote a book trying to take down Mitch McConnel after considering running against him. Its tiresome and divisive.
1. Sure Matt and the KSR crew lean Democrat/Liberal..(there isn't one thing Biden ran on i agreed with on a personal note.....but Ky needs to get McConnell out of Senate IMO).
2. But I don't think you listen to the show....hardly any politics ever come up.
3. He has done a segment on each county in Ky since Covid to highlight the entire State when there isn't sports topic to discuss.
4. They do goofy guy stuff like "Shannon can walk 75 miles", "Drew in KSR jail because he can't putt" etc...kind of bets. They banter back and forth and laugh at themselves in good humor.

I find his show enjoyable even though I don't agree with a reasonable percentage of his takes. If you're trying to describe a pure "homer" of UK sports...that would have been the Dave "Buzz" Baker days. But I like the show and think even conservative political people can more than enjoy it.

He killed us late in the second half in the first game. I knew that’s where the ball was going.

So true. As fans, we have come to expect kids to make an immediate impact as freshman and if they struggle, many want them out the door and replaced. We need guys like Askew to return and work on his game. That's how you develop veteran players and leadership.

Anyone with the least bit of Basketball savvy knows Cal isn't a good bench coach. He HAS TO HAVE great players to win.
His offense is absolutely horrible and stuck in the early 2000's and he consistently gets out coached in close games.

All he talked about was " dribble drive " which was just marketing to get good athletic guards to play for him. He has never valued the 3 point shot, and has refused to change his philosophy about offensive Basketball.

Cal sees the fans as the enemy, talks down to us, takes out his frustration with the fans on Dontaie. Lost the only two people he'd listen to when they criticize him (Peevy and Payne) so there's nobody he'll listen to now. Never had any idea what he was doing with this team. Doesn't want him gone, believes he can turn it around, but he HAS to make changes and has to get back to embracing the fanbase.
Thanks, first I've read " to get back to embracing the fanbase". I know this is a paraphrase ... I felt it was required during Petino to " kiss-the-ring." It got sickening. I hope Cal can find his way back to winning but to many of the fan base it will never-be-like-before.

Matt nailed it when he talked about the contract that Cal has. No one in their mind would have turned that down. The problem was it was offered. Cal doesn't have to do anything for three or four more years, nothing. We can go winless for those next three years and the money isn't there to buy him out. I can't believe this contract was ever written and offered.

I think most of the frustration comes from the leaving no matter what mentality.

Boton and Clarke haven't met expectations. Neither one is anywhere near ready for the NBA. Both will go.

I agree we have to be encouraging and welcoming to kids coming back. People acting upset over Askew coming back--if the kids that struggle aren't welcome back, then we'll never get anyone back.

Honest question. Do you really believe he will change? Based on what? Something he has said or done? I am honeslty asking.

I do think he will change behavior towards media/fans.

Regarding his philosophy/approach- I don't think a guy of his ego and with his history of success would ever allow for this type of season to happen again.

You and I have exchanged opinions on this for the better part of the year. I truly think Cal tried to change a few years back and was bit by transfers and guys ditching program. We escaped this type of awful season by having some guys take huge leaps- PJ, Quickly, Richards, etc.

We have to get guys back. I think Jai will be a help there. He has spoken openly about re-recruiting your current players. I think this is the biggest piece of the puzzle. I also think something will change on the staff.

The season is over

While I plan on listening to what Matt said on the podcast

the person I"m really waiting on now is Mitch.

He has a $9m dollar coach on his hands that just coached a season at UK where they aren't qualified to play in the NIT and the coach has developed an antagonistic relationship with the fanbase.

He has to address it.

As for Matt, their website broke ranks with UK this year big time. I don't listen to any of their stuff but I can appreciate they moved away from butt kissing UK to actually taking a more critical eye. I don't want it to go the other way and they all turn into baby Jerry Tiptons, but the balance is better than Praise U.

Yeah, he needs to leave the fans out of this and self reflect. He just lead the UK basketball team to a total of 9 wins in the most embarrassing season possible. I never thought I’d see something like that in my life. An NIT appearance here and there, sure that happens, but going 9-16 is unacceptable.

Cal needs to look at the program form top to bottom and see what can be changed to keep UK at the top of the pack. Cal always talks about needing to look in the mirror and do what’s best for the team, it’s his time to do that as well. If Payne is someone he trusts, I hope Kenny sits him down and asks “what the f**k have you been thinking?”
Cashing those nice checks still though. He ain't gonna change. Has no reason to change. Nobody at UK will even ask him to.
