Those who say that college athletes deserve to be highly paid, answer this:

Would you pay to watch Adrian Martinez or Bryce McGowens if they weren't playing for the University of Nebraska?
If they were still at Nebraska then yes. I will watch them when they play.

I can't help but wonder how this will effect locker rooms moving forward. Someone's making $500k or more and most are making peanuts or free burritos.

We're really in a win-win situation here. If we get Mathis, great. If not, money saved can be used to lower the price of Fairbury Stadium dogs.

Also saw this on reddit.

"Ochuan Mathis’s mother with some insight. If he chooses Texas this needs to be looked into real hard. GBR"

No. Once they leave here, there are other huskers for me to care about. I still wish them well and am happy when I see highlights, but I dont care.

Its a 2-way street. These athletes NEED a school as a means to an end, so people care about them, but the school needs the best athletes in order to be successful and relevant.

I wouldn’t pay to see a ****** product

Those teams in the 90s weren’t great because they had an N on their helmets - Nebraska was great because they had great players with great coaching

3pm decision time for Mathis.

I gotta say, players dragging out decisions and stringing multiple schools along to create more fanfare and hype over their decision is getting old fast.
Just man up, make a choice and move on.
I'll add to the fire. Kinda like this guy.

you seem to be trying to draw a straight line between tv viewership and earnings. this is folly.

Could Fox or whoever holds the rights to big ten football come up with a large NIL deal for conference athletes - maybe redirect some of the funds they pay to schools or the conference to an NIL fund

seems like they would have a financial interest in the big ten being more competitive

what if someone proposed “checks and balances” on power 5 schools so that mid majors have an equal opportunity to compete?
P5 schools would probably form their own organization with their own rules and leave the other guys out. Probably coming to that any way.

It would be up to the conference I think IF they wanted to devote some of the media rights money they negotiate to go to an NIL fund.

we're there.

it's called the CFP, and cincy's loss last year sealed G5's mid-major fate. no non-P5 team will ever qualify again.

Good call my man. I'll add what I know atm.

This guy, big Texas insider, flipped his pick to N. If you click on the on3 ochaun-math part it has N at 98%.

Sipple on the radio also saying N.

Went to the Texas 247 board and one of their staff members said he heard that Nebraska feels very, very confident. This same guy talks to a ton of recruits and said that Nebraska isn't fking around when it comes down to NIL money.

Most Texas fans on there are now thinking N.

I didn't think we ever had much of a shot, but this could be happening boys and girls.

If a sleazy team with big money poaches a key player from my college team (Minnesota), I'd be in favor of boycotting ever playing them. I'd be open to the idea of breaking away and forming a league with some semblance of real college athletics.

NIL/Transfer is like the real world.

If you get a new gig and after a few months you realize that you work with people that are your age and have more experience at that company and that your bosses are just a bit older than you...it sets in...I don't have a ton of upward mobility here I better start looking for a better fit.
Cool
.Make them employees and tax them for their scholarships.

I felt like those last trips to Texas were done to see if they could change his mind about going to NU. We really need him and his passion is a great fit here.

Why? The scholarship is not part of that.
A nerd on scholly for his grades with a job at the rec center gets taxed on his job...not his scholly.
The nerd has to have certain grades to get that scholarship and probably still pay for their own food and healthcare. The nerd doesbt use the school to.make said money as oppose to athletes who get subsidized by being athletic participants of the school..IE free marketing.

The scholarships aren't the same.

The players have to have certain grades too.

Should a kid that is writing like Shakespeare and gets a full ride...pay taxes?

Shouldn't that nerd fight for more? And get it? I think they should.

Stop hating free market.

You realize that until last year...a 7th grader that was good at sports could not only make money for being good at sports BUT also still play middle school sports, with no issue...while a college player could not.

What about a stunning 18 year old senior in HS VB player...that starts getting offers to model...should she be able to model AND play VB in college while getting paid>?>>

Casey Thompson wasn't lying. He was simply telling the truth. Nebraska is not f***ing around when it comes to NIL. We might not win every fight but schools are going to equate Nebraska in the same vein as Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas and other big money schools. Not a school that others are going to want to compete with. We have the rabid fan base. That's what you need.

That's nothing to be proud of. Having the worst FB & BB programs under normal circumstances. And then using bribery & sleaze to buy players.

You guys say your fans are superior and that it's the American way. But no, it's not. For instance, you can't pay people to do crimes, become Nazis or Commies...there are some things you can't buy. You're making a complete mockery of what college sports is supposed to be.

I realize that some teams cheat and should be dealt with. Expanding the playoff to 16 teams would be a start. But I'm 100% against going down into the gutter with them. Shameful.

Then get off the train and stop watching. Who are you to tell anyone or look down on anything that is now part of the college landscape. Get over it or get out scumbag. You are equating this to paying someone to do crimes? We are not making a mockery of anything it is part of the land scape now like it or not.

The sleazy golden gophers of the north will use NIL as well. You have come off as the most I'll informed self righteous douch on here. Loser

No one forces you to watch. Equating NIL with crime? You may want to go back and re-read what Judge Kavanaugh had to say on the matter. Here it is for you...

"Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate," he wrote. "And under ordinary principles of antitrust law, it is not evident why college sports should be any different."

Kavanaugh added that the NCAA's business model would be "flatly illegal in almost any other industry in America."

Sounds like our Supreme Court thought the NCAA wasn't above the law. What is a fair market rate? Well, who knows? I guess we'll find out at 3pm today. I'm hoping it's about 500k. No shame in my game, these athletes deserve to get paid. I do however agree with you, this is going to hurt the college sports model as it existed previously and there are definitely things that need to be worked out. I think another model will develop over time, and long term college football will be fine.

Btw...our program might not be superior (right now), but our fans are superior. Nebraska takes a backseat to no one when it comes to fan support. Understand that whoever you are.

This is where I'm at too. Better players than him just picked a school and got on with their life.

However, maybe this is a part of a bigger plan to create media buzz to help with the draft and ad spots. Regardless it's annoying.

The real question. Is Mathis really that good?
This is the question. There is an NIL tracker that gives each recruit an estimated NIL value that I saw somewhere. Mathis was at about 37k per year. If we are paying 500k as some speculation has suggested, we are overpaying. That being said, Nebraska needs to overpay to get talent here.

I'm a conservative. But I don't like or trust anyone on the Supreme Court. I don't even like Clarence Thomas. Why should I like him....anyone can be bought off for $10M per year and everyone smooching his backside.

Mathis is good but damn you'd think this was a battle over Von Miller lol
Agreed. He definitely had a significant drop off last year from the previous year. Guess both programs are hoping he can get back to his standout numbers. I know the sack leader at Texas only had 2.5 sacks, so it wouldn't take much to improve that output.
