We have a couple older women here at work. One handles accounts receivable, and the other handles accounts payable. Both work in the accounting department, and consider themselves accountants, due to doing accounting work. Neither have a degree in accounting, but they're considered accountants.

I pulled the tractor out of the shed last night, and mowed the lawn. That doesn't make me anything special, but at least for a couple hours last night, I was considered to be my wife's lawn boy.

So you think everyone in the accounting department has an accounting degree? That is silly. I can promise you everyone performing engineering at an engineering company doesnt have a BS in engineering. I dont know how it works at a law firm, but I have heard stories about lawyers getting in trouble for certain practices.

That is referring to PE's signing off on projects. If I was selling engineering services as an engineer it would be illegal. All work I do is under the supervision of a PE.

Agreed. You can also be a sound engineer, and my favorite was a guy who pumped gas referred to himself as a petroleum transfer engineer.

Not sure what cunty is talking about. I don't work in the field so I had to google it. There are numerous jobs working as a civil engineer that don't require a degree or a licence. Not to mention military enlisted civil engineers. I have never seen @dave say he was a mechanical engineer.

I have never been a nurse and would never say that...I have banged a nurse or two...or three...I spent most of my career in Pharmaceuticals specializing in infectious diseases and pain management...I wore many hats within a fortune 20 company and my healthcare experience was very in-depth as I worked with some of the most prestigious ID experts, pharmacist's and pain management leaders in the world.

Engineering means that you are an expert in a field...A PE is a title...big difference...

A PE is similar to a CPA or passing the bar exam. It is difficult to get and quite an achievment. Itis nice to have financially and it comes with a lot of liability. I dont even know if I would say being an engineer means you are an expert but engineers have to look at a situation from a lot of different perspectives and apply science and math to achieve a level of safety and quality solutions based on facts. It is a very fact driven business.

Civil engineers must have graduated with a degree in civil engineering, and therefore had to major in civil engineering, unlike dildodave "who didn't major in civil engineering."

My wife’s uncle was chief engineer for TRW in Cleveland. He was hired away and became chief engineer near Lynchburg manufacturing nuclear rods for the Navy. He retired in Dallas as a project manager for Erickson Cellular. He oversaw all the tower installations for Carlos Slim. His only degree was an associates degree in design. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

In a 5 minute search on careerbuilders.com, I found that government positions want the civil engineering degree, but private firms only require an ABET related degree.

Let me put this to rest...my best friends daughter works as an IT engineer for Apple. She has a degree in that from OSU. There a lots of people with the same title as her that never even went to college but are recognized as engineers at Apple. In fact, a lot of tech companies prefer self taught IT people over degrees as they are more proficient. My future SIL has a minor in IT and said its worthless and most companies prefer non college engineers as they are better employees...
