Al, you've been predicting a national championship in 5 years for the last 20.
Could be a good strategy by Al. After all, we are pretty certain to win a national championship 5 years from an infinitely flexible point in time. In fact, we already have.

There's nothing we need to do "to be prepared." If it happens, we can deal with it then. There'll be plenty of alum money around to help pay him if we indeed win nine or ten games in a year.
I agree with the first two sentences. Not so sure about the third.

RU would appear to need to work harder on fostering a sense of giving back to the school among it's students. It's only anecdotal, but I know far, far more RU grads that give them nothing, than RU grads that donate regularly (not just talking sports, but academically as well).

The resultant increase in ticket revenue will take care of it. (He will only receive this increase after success)
I think that money is earmarked to pay off the expansion and other long-term debts as originally proposed a decade+ ago.

It’s the plenty of alum money I’m not so sure of, but I hope you’re right.
Yeah, but the football program is not about GS (or any coach). And it should never be. Which is why we're all arguing for doing nothing at all until GS earns a pay increase or contract extension, which he has not yet done.

The availability of alum money doesn't require Hobbs to alter GS's contract now. Hobbs has reasons to increase donations that are independent of who a particular coach might be. Those reasons existed prior to GS and will exist long after GS is gone.

Yes, Rutgers needs more alums who contribute. (I'll omit my usual speech about why I think we don't have enough alum contributors.) But it seems to me there are enough deep pockets among the sports donors that it ought to be possible to pay what is needed. If there isn't the money to pay a coach who is winning nine to ten games a year, and who represents the institution very well (e.g. he really cares about making sure the players get an education and graduate), then maybe we ought to re-consider whether we're committed to having a successful football program.

That's the question alright. I think the school can initiate things, and seems genuinely interested in doing so now with a reasonable salary level for coach and assistants. And being in the Big Ten helps w/funding.

But ultimately, the team is going to need to win more to build fan excitement. And then the fanbase is going to have to contribute to keeping the ball rolling. If we get to 10 wins, which is a big ask, we'll have more fans. But they won't necessarily be interested in donations unless the winning continues for a few seasons.

It's up to Hobbs to figure out how to leverage building excitement and turn it into donations that can help fun coaches pay and facility improvements. Hopefully he knows what he's doing.

The only way we get and stay even close to competitive is with far more alumni engagement. It's not happening any other way. Many here like to talk about the conference payouts but that doesn't mean anything. That's baseline. Everyone gets those. It's what you do after that which separates Ohio St. and Rutgers.

Not happening, never. 9 or 10 win seasons on a regular basis mean going undefeated with our OOC schedule every year, winning our cross division games, and beating Indiana, Maryland, and Michigan State every year. Then you would still have to beat OSU, Michigan, or PSU just to get to 10. The other programs in our division/conference have their state populations and state politicians backing them as a result they have a blank check to win. There is absolutely no history for that type of support in the state of NJ, and that is not changing even if we have some winning seasons. We have heard this all before, when we entered the B1G this was the mantra, now we are in the big time the people in this state will rally around us, we will beat Maryland, Indiana, Michigan State every year and in a few years we will own Penn State as well. . . .

The resultant of your your argument then is that recruiting results are directly related to having a "blank check" for the program? That may have an effect but that's not what I am saying.

What I am saying is that if we can get a top 25 class with the level of support we have right now, and we can be consistent with that level of recruiting and support grows, then 9 wins as an average and the occasional breakout year of 10 or even more is very much not above our ceiling. Too many of the posters here have this never gonna happen mentality..... I just don't understand it, and history and data do not support that view.

I love enthusiasm and a positive, glass half filled approach, but sometimes you do have to see reality for what it is. Schiano didn't consistently win 9 or 10 games his first go around, why in a much tougher league would that change. Also, the idea that the other universities in our division/conference are just going to remain stagnant and allow us to become dominant is silly, all of them, including NW, have deeper pockets and some of them have virtually unlimited resources. Do you think Indiana, Michigan State, Maryland, Penn State, are just going to allow themselves to be our patsies year-in and year-out. Can we on a rare occasion have a team that wins 9 or 10 games, maybe, but we certainly will not be able to match the NIL money offered by most of our conference mates in the future.

Not at all. Was merely saying no need to reward him with a new contract. If he gets to 9-10 wins (al's metric) then reward him. No need to be afraid of him leaving. If he turns it around 1)he stays and you reward him at that point or 2) He leaves and it is a desirable job and we bring in a good coach at that point. But no need to renegotiate or extend contract now.
Nah we need to lock him in for the next 10 years so he has time to reach the same winning percentage as Kyle Flood

Results are driven by recruiting. We bring in four more classes like the one we’re bringing in, and this is easily a 9-10 win team. What other people do, is not our problem. What we need to do is build our football field house, and the results will take care of themselves.

You are too funny! "Easily" a 9-10 win team. The trouble with your posts at this point is that you behave like the buffoon at a party 90% of the time just to grab attention, any attention, good or bad, that you can't take anything you say seriously. Can Rutgers in the future do something like NW and have the occasional great season mixed in with years of mediocre, maybe, but that has yet to be proven. So my serious response to you is let's see Schiano do it, and you as a poster stop making a fool out of yourself with constant threads putting teams on upset alert.

You posted a lot of words to say nothing. This year, we recruited arguably the best OL and DL in NJ, and one of the best incoming LBers in the country in Moses Walker and one of the best QBs in the country in Gavin Wimsatt to bolster our squad. Consistently strong Recruiting results and player development are going to determine our success. Not your flawed conclusions regarding your perceptions of where we stand in the football hierarchy.

The problem is I don't believe any of your analysis, you have said fantastic over-the-top stuff about every class we recruit for as long as I can remember. Also, with the transfer portal you don't know if any of these kids will be around to see the field. If they are so great why did they come to Rutgers and not a program that will pay them much more in NIL money? Do you think the top recruits in NJ in the future are going to play at Rutgers when our conference mates can pay them significantly more money? The traditional recruiting models will no longer exist very shortly. If this class is all you say it is, enjoy it, because when the big money hits, we will not be able to compete.

Easily 10-2, or 9-3 for that matter, does not exist in the Big10 East, even for Ohio St.

What has happened to Northwestern since their field house was completed?

This year was a rebuilding year, after having appeared in the Big Ten Championship Game two out of the last four seasons.
NW B1G Recruiting Rankings (Fieldhouse Competed 2018):
2017: 11 -zero 4 or 5 stars
2018: 14 - one 4 star
2019: 11- zero 4 or 5 stars
2020: 12 - one 4 star
2021- 11 - three 4 stars
2022- 11- two 4 stars

The field house has not really moved the needle on recruiting top talent .

At some point, we will have to adjust Schiano’s contract. Otherwise the market will do it for us.
How much is a CEO worth?

admittedly Rutgers is not most coaches dream job. And GS is the face of our program -even when he left.

But the salary packages these guys are making is insane . If Greg is sables to string 2-3 years of B1G East contention together a la 2006 -2009 teams maybe he gets a bump -but we’ve got to retain the coaches we need and want while continuing to upgrade faculties …and the staff has to recruit HS /Portal :and then produce (sand blowout losses …and maybe a few blowout W’s).

Just my opinion …push comes to shove I WANT Greg to steer the ship.
