Al, have you not heard the riotous hoopla surrounding this whole thing? Cristobal will pull an 8MM-a-year salary, but I don't think that includes the 9MM buyout that UM has to pay Oregon, then there's the 8MM owed to Manny Diaz. And where's the money coming from is the worst part of it.

Given what we did with CVS, expect RU to do the dumbest thing possible…Especially if Hobbs is still around
Was about to respond with something similar. If he does to get to 9-10 win seasons, Schiano will not be going anywhere and will get rewarded handsomely at that point. If he does not like t reward a 9-10 win Rutgers will have no problem attracting coaches or players. If he does not get to 9-10 win seasons we will be in market for a different coach.

Not yet, but once he wins 9-10 games, they will be.
He could've gone to a bowl this year and I'd say don't do anything. He can win your 9 games for a season and I'd still say the same. I don't want to be locked into long term contracts off short term results. Not a fan of his 8 year deal either. We're not these rich schools that can buy someone out so easily either. Things have to be financially manageable in the event things go wrong and we see in the landscape more often than not they do.

Want to give a big 1 time bonus (in the millions) for some good results in a given year, I'm fine with that. But I don't want long term obligations without consistent results shown over years. Just like I say with other coaches, if they want to leave then let them and do your job as an AD and find the next guy who can be good.

We are not getting to 9-10 wins. Maybe once in a blue moon when the stars align, but 7-8 wins will be a massive success.

Not for nothing and it was the PAC-12 but be was 35-13 at Oregon with 2 conference titles over 4 seasons. When GS gets us close to that point then we will need to worry about competing but not quite there yet.

Mario Cristobal purportedly overcame his past bad record as a head coach at FIU, establishing a 35-13 W-L Record (23-9) in conference over 4 years. In the last 3 years, he had his team finish 1st, 2nd and 1st in his division and got his team to two Rose Bowls.

Greg is 8-13 (5-13 in conference over 2 years). He makes more than Locksley (based on published numbers). Tom Allen at Indiana renogiated his deal in March 21, and at the time: was "24-22 at Indiana with consecutive bowl appearances, a 14-7 record since 2019, and a No. 12 AP poll finish last season."

Results matter. Yeah, Oregon is an easier job and was not a rebuild. But looks at RU's true peers in the B1G lower level and tell me Greg deserves more for the results to date.

Most, importantly, we apparently don't have billion dollar donors who get a more inflated sense of self importance lampooning as minor league sports owners ready to throw money at a head coach of our football team.

And engineered a minor turnaround following the decline at the end of Helfrich's tenure.

Just stop. The two situations are not even remotely close and there are many more differences than any similarities. That does not indicate any approval of the CVS deal/situation. It's just totally different.

We won’t fire him if he wins 7 or 8 games. That’s our ceiling.

Exactly. I forgot he was at Oregon (I don't constantly keep track of people who have left Rutgers).

Just a casual look at his resume:
G5 Conference COY (Sun Belt)
P5 Conference COY (P12)
4 winning seasons in a P5 conference
3 P5 Conference Championship Game appearances
2 P5 Conference Championships
Rose Bowl win

That resume costs money.

Rutgers fans would settle for one winning conference record from schiano .

We need a nevin Shapiro type. He’s out of jail so maybe he would be interested in supporting good old RU.
Miami was a better team when he was around .

Greg Schiano is the exception, because he is the only coach that has been able to demonstrate consistent success. It would be cheaper for us to pay Greg his $8M, then to go the cheapskate route only to watch that person fall flat on his face. Rutgers decision not to pay up for Cristobal in 2012 cost us 10 years of progress. Greg needs to be our JoePa.

There are no exceptions. You might think there are but there aren’t. ADs making bad hires doesn’t make this an exception it just means make better hires.

Also it’s not cheap skate, it’s having financial sanity which is important for a school with less resources.

Schiano makes 4+ million a year. Hardly underpaid. Just because some schools this year entered crazy coaching contracts doesn't mean every program will (be able to) follow suit. I said last year, the new arms race is coaching contracts. It'll bleed into assistant coaches too and soon many P5 programs will pay their OC\DC 1 million. But given Schiano's Penn St history, he doesn't have a whole lot of leverage, no other school will be gunning for him, unless he starts winning a lot more than losing.

Well your wrong. The new arms race is NIL deals. Coaches contracts have already been an arms race chief.

That’s the point. Schiano’s only other option besides Rutgers paying him $4MM was the NE Patriots paying him $1MM. There is no market for Greg Schiano. At some point we were bidding against ourselves.

That's a bit misleading. If you are going to do that, then I need to revise my Mario Cristobal comparison and throw in his 27-47 record and his 62-60 overall record. On that comparative record, Greg and Mario should be paid equivalently. (I strive to see both sides of arguments).

Taking out the first few years of each tenure when he inherited substandard recruits, he probably would average 8-4 per season. That's a realistic goal, and would also mean an annual bowl.
