Thanks for correcting me..I was thinking during my high school games..

Back then dunking wasn’t allowed in warm ups back in the late 70‘s just in games …

What you rambling about ? Taking 5 years more games to score and get close to 3667 points..

His team sucks 13-18.LSU went to NIT when only 24 teams were allowed in the NCAA tournament..
And I won’t even mention the 3 point line which is another factor…

Pete’s a hall a Pro Hall a Famer is he not.?

Take a Hike.
Ok Boomer… should I get off your lawn

And you have no idea what you are talking about. Feelings don't count. Today's game favors offense, not defense. You can't play physical like they did back then. They didn't have a shot clock, either. Teams would play keep away. Anybody remember four corners? And you think that opposing teams didn't know that Maravich was coming? They couldn't stop him.

And yes, Bird was the greatest of all time!
Pete was a 6’5 guard who could shoot playing against 5’10 guys.

The fact that you think that is what that means is hilarious
Not as hilarious as you thinking this Davis guy has made some accomplishment because you’re millennial mind thinker..

Go watch UTube and STFU.

I’m no millennial. Gen X.

And yes, it’s great accomplishment regardless of how long he’s played. Maybe not at the magnitude Pete did but it’s open for a debate. I am saying the game is harder today. Scoring is way down. Bobby Knight had a lecture about how Defense has hit its zenith in the college game and how offenses need to respond or rules need to be adjusted. Do I think Davis is as good of a player as Pistol. No. No way. But it’s still a great accomplishment. And you can talk about a 3 point line, talk about a shot clock, talk about all of these items but I’ll keep going back to the fact that college basketball, scoring is down no matter how you paint the picture.

We can even talk about how Pete’s record is almost meaningless at this point because the best players never last longer then a year so who cares. LeBron or Melo could have taken the record but Pete dodged a bullet in so many ways too. And yes Melo and James are better then Pete ever was. Melo even won a Natty, did Pete?

You sure about all that?
Steve Kerr is the career NBA leader for 3 point shooting at 45 %.

Pete was a hobbled past his prime player when the 3 point was added to the NBA game. He had two years, one with Larry Bird. His career 3 point percentage is an unthinkable 66%. That was in the era of Bird, Magic, and Abdul-Jabbar.
Don't give me this different times jazz.
He shot twelve 3-pointers in his career.

You can’t bring up a fallacy of someone not even participating in college basketball ( LaBrone) Stephen Curry played 3 collegiate years and is easily and is as good a Cry baby LaBron…

Sure the game has changed all for the scorer by using the shot clock instead of stalling and running clock..

Let’s debate games 150 not counting Covid and I’m fine with 150 but it’s 4 years and now a days they have longer seasons than 50/60 years ago.. Would agree with that right..

Only way he has even came close is because of the Covid year ( 5 years) despite having a three point line even..

Playing 170+ games and 5 years is laughable making him the all time leading scorer…

Who the hell is Melo?

FWIW- Steph Curry scored 2,635 at Davidson.
He was 23rd all time scoring in a single season (947)
Curry played in 104 games averaging 25.3 a game.

If he played his 4th year we would have needed 1,033 points to beat Pete scoring record.
He would have needed to avg 34.4 a game..

Not counting the Covid year Antoine Davis averages 25.6 a game for 4 years..

I’ll rest my case..

What in the bloody hell does TV timeouts have to do with points scored in a game? 40 minutes of game time is 40 minutes of game time.

Yeah a few years from now Jim Boeheim might pass Coach K for all-time wins. That too will be a great achievement, but I won’t need an asterisk to tell me who is the better coach.
I do agree that no one is looking at this guy and thinking he is a better player or even scorer, than most of the other top 10 scorers in NCAA history.

And if he was really that good, he'd been drafted after his freshman/sophomore season.

Are you serious? My dad was a 6'2" guard in the mid 1960's playing high school in Omaha and he wasn't even the tallest guard. Now there were some shorter dudes on the team, and there were more guys that were 5'10 or whatever on college and NBA squads, but to make a blanket statement that Maravich was shooting over small dudes as a reason he scored more points than anyone else in history is short sighted at best, ignorant at worst.

Pete is a great player…he also played in a barely integrated time. He was not the best player to play the college game. That said, comparing five years to three is obviously unfair. Then again, nobody is calling this guy the greatest player to play the game, just a very good player with a great career.

Some of the 1st team all Americans Lew Alcindor, Bob Lanier, Spencer Haywood, Elvin Hayes, Charlie Scott and Calvin Murphy those don’t seem integrated too me, besides Pete only other white players that were 1st team all Americans from 1968-1970 were Rick Mount and Dan Issel.

You’re another one that needs spending time watching Pete Maravich on UTUBE..

Go look at the SEC teams in that era. I’m not saying he wasn’t a great player, just that he isn’t the best. Oh and his father was the coach, and the team was bad.

They seem integrated or they don’t? You seem confused. How many black players were on SEC rosters that year? I noticed none on the LSU team and none on the SEC chance that year the Tennessee Volunteers.

Every thing you see in today game with ball handling, dribbling and passing was all innovation that Pete created and now players try and duplicate what he‘s done 53-55 years ago..

You do know that at one time he was the only white player (caucasian) asked to play for the Harlem Globetrotters.. Right?

I agree that he was a great player. I’m just saying that he is by no means the greatest player to play NCAA basketball. Everyone was arguing about asterisks on this other kids record and my point is that we are already comparing apples and oranges.

I have no idea what criteria on what you see judging who the best is player is but it’s definitely different than majority of people..

Bringing up Pete played in the SEC with no integrated players, well I will remind you 1965 and 1966 Alabama teams who were all white beat Nebraska who was integrated 39-28 in the 66 Orange Bowl and then again in the 67 Sugar Bowl..

So throw out that theory out the window..

Pistol played in 83 games as a collegian at LSU where he averaged 44.2 PPG for his career. I imagine you could add 5-8 more PPG if he had a 3 point line. Even if the “record” is broken, Maravich remains the greatest college player of all time.

Statistician went back and watched all his games and had there been a 3 point line he would have averaged 57 points per game. Insane!!

Exactly!
I can look over that, no problem..But to give anyone fifth year because Covid is inexcusable to break the all time scoring record ..

If the NCAA has any credibility they acknowledge an Asterix if he breaks the record..

So much this. Maravich was an innovator on the court that later generations of fans just don't get. His collegiate and professional peers all acknowledge that he was a generational talent.

Thank you, I can see your appreciation that what he gave to the game it was Mozart in motion, can’t understand the yuppi’s that don’t see the art in his performances..

You know, its not like Maravich's stats are just slightly better than everyone else's, hence, fodder for good argument. His scoring stats are so far above the clouds its doubted anyone will every touch them. And as stated, his capability with the three point line would have been unfathomable.
So stuff about his dad being coach or integrated teams seem minor details compared with the enormity of what he did and if we're going to go with a ledger he played only three seasons remember. He didn't just do some things well, he created whole concepts.
And for Pete's sake, he didn't go one on one with James Naismith with an old peach basket. I am not sure how people percieve the era before cell phones but it was much like today minus the blaring information.

This goat crap is just that, crap. There are great players in different circumstances. Sometimes those are real comparable.

And another thing: If the times that Pete played had conditions that didn't maximize their potential like today then you can only pile on more accolades to someone who didn't have a layer of camps etc. or information like today's players have. You're defeating your own argument.
Btw, basketball isn't that complicated.
