Good grief, give it a rest. Its complete ********!This clip is taken out of context. It's the kid's birthday. Not fair to judge his actions off this brief clip IMO. No one knows what caused this reaction.
Not exactly but I heared the Rowdy Reptiles were mockingly singing Monk happy Birthday so let's not crucify the kid.So, you're fine with his behavior at that moment?
Fans should know that it is ok for a 19 year old to laugh off a rival student section chant directed at them. Even during a loss.
Especially during a blowout that had been over for 30 minutes.
Any fan that cannot accept this needs to grow up and never raise any children.
I am proud that Cal's players have all seemed to be solid young men we are proud of not immature temper tantrum meanies like some of our righteous fans.
I never recall laughing when we got beat back in the day when I played.
Agree. But Cal is 'marketing' his boys to the league, so to hell with the best line-up. We need to get players drafted. Winning games is apparently secondary.
I agree that a non athletic 3 is not helping this team, but Cal is not going to change it. His goal is to get as many guys to the NBA, drafted as high as possible, and as soon as possible.
He is hell-bent on winning with freshmen to try and prove a point his way is the best way. The next group of 5* talent sees that Cal wont bench them, he will showcase them, and thus the perpetual monster is fed. Cal's worse nightmare is to have too many Briscoes (projected one and done that don't pan out), it backs up the pipeline, and he has to flush them out to NBA in some fashion. He is losing 7 players off this team minimum.
I don't want to question Calipari and coaching, but I do wish he would take better care of himself. He needs to slim down and I know for a fact that it would change his approach to every facet of his life.
He's a kid. It's his personality. He's always laughing and smiling ALL THE TIME! Get over yourself! (And I've been a U.K. Fan since Vernon Hatton)I know you run a "players first" program and I respect that. It is part of your recruiting strategy and is one of the cornerstones of how you connect to today's "me first" youth. I get that.
One thing going forward, though. You are also charged with maintaining the UK program. Of carrying the baton forward from what all those who came before you established. The Kentucky basketball program is unique in the intimacy of the bond between the fans and the program. It is part of the very fiber of a Kentuckian. A cherished special thing that is handed down to kids and families that will never step foot on the UK campus.
When you are recruiting you have to make potential recruits understand that if the name "Kentucky" means nothing to them then you don't want them here. I know we might miss out on a player or two or maybe some may look at that as naive, but players can respect and understand what it means to the State of Kentucky to play basketball at the University of Kentucky before heading on to a long and successful NBA career. They need not be mutually exclusive.
We should never see a UK star player laughing and cutting up on the bench while Kentucky is being blown out. We should never have players that view Kentucky as nothing more than a stepping stone to an NBA paycheck. You are fundamentally undermining the very essence of Kentucky by fielding such players and such teams. The bond that unites us all as Kentucky fans is not taken for granted. It is earned each year and maintained through a shared precious culture of discipline, effort, and respect for the game. We don't flop. We don't floor slap. We don't ever rush the court. We applaud opposing players that fight on valiantly in defeat or even in victory against our Cats because the game, and more importantly what the game reveals, is an important part of how we view ourselves as Kentuckians.
Please understand a little bit more of the part you play in maintaining our traditions. Of passing on the program you were the caretaker of to new players, coaches and generations of UK fans down the line.
You, and the players you bring here, like it or not and warts and all, will become part of a permanent thing having added your part. The outcome of which is uncertain and to be contested.
What do you want that part to be and how do you want it to be remembered? What are you communicating to your players about that as I would prefer this spectacle to not be a part of it:

This is totally unacceptable but Cal will probably just shrug it off. I hope he uses it as a so called teachable moment but Cal usually
gives players a long leash. Too long if you ask me. Let's not forget that he blew off the handshake line too. UK doesn't do things this way.

Be interesting to see how Cal reacts to this.
So, you're fine with his behavior at that moment?
Bad look. Just reinforces the national perception that these OAD players don't really care about winning. I don't care if it was his birthday and they were singing to him, your TEAM is getting drilled and you are laughing. I really like Monk. Seems like a happy go lucky kid, but this relfects bad on him and Cal.
If Cal doesn't that shows how, much he understands the UK fan base....I don't care what the teams record is ......behavior like that is ridiculous....and if there was any real leadership on the team then it wouldn't happen
Those of you that think nothing is wrong with this probably never played competitive basketball before. I was on the wrong end of a few blow outs and none of us were laughing on the bench, especially us starters after we were took out. Grevey, Givens, Macy, Bowie, Walker, Chapman, nor Mashburn would act like that. It made me sick, I would have given anything to play at U.K. and to see guys act like that just did something to me. No excuse even if it was his birthday.
It just shows the "it's all about me" culture.
I can't believe fans will defend his laughing. It's unreal what Cal has done to the
I don't care if he just won the lottery, which he does in June. Theses guys need to know one thing money won't be able to buy is an NCAA title. They'll never have another chance at one.
At 15 I knew better than to laugh on the bench during a blowout
This probably irritates me more than anything that happened in the game last night. Basically because it shows the overall attitude that Monk has as a player. I would hope he would be sick at his stomach over the loss and trying to figure out what he could do to better help the team. Time to go punch my punching bag!
Monk is not toxic. It is dumb to suggest he is. He needs to improve his D, which was actually very good the GA game, and rebounding which he never has in his life...
May seem extreme, but he clearly does not care one bit about playing for the team. He just wants to make it to draft day and move on. Fine, but let's move on now and put someone in who actually gives a damn. This team is finished either way. I'd rather watch someone who gives everything...
I never recall you playing?

That would be one NCAA title...Cal has created a OAD monster, it must be fed, it sometimes turns on you as a coach, but it is still a monster capable of Final Fours and occasional NCAA titles, this is Kentucky Basketball under Cal.
It is relevant in every way so the criticism and praise spirals to the nth degree.
You're views and mine differ on this. But a lot Of assuming in your post IMO. Monk is a great kid by all accounts but he's still human and likely to do dumb things. He did one last night just like Briscoe did by shooting off his mouth. You guys are hilarious.
Yes Throatpoker they were singing to him you ultra troll.
The rest of you think this combat.
None of you played at this level, none of you know the kid.
The CBS writer is dumb and many of our fans come off as desperate.
The kid laughed for a few seconds at some song from rival students.
You guys can keep on throwing remote controls, beating your wives and kicking your dogs over a bunch of teenagers losing a game.
The kid has won games for this team. He obviously cares.
The last few seconds of a blowout means nothing about a team.
Dont be "that dad" at the game expecting your child to be that killer instinct 9 year old...
This group has numerous flaws, a 5 second giggle is not one.
I know I gobbled up some friends in this response... i mean it with all due respect brothers.
If he does he will get T'd up for sure depending on who is calling the gameI wont be surprised when he has a heart attack 5 feet outside the coaches box.
