The MAIS don't release what their official football realignment for 2021 - 22 is going to look like but today they release a draft of their 2021 football schedule.

Notes on realignment to follow.

For VHDawg-- Hillcrest Christian moves down to 3A and is in a district with Sylva-Bay, Amite, and Centreville. Newton which had been in 3A moves to 2A 8-man football.

Delta Streets moves up from 2A to 3A.

There are 11 3A football playing schools.

I didn't even know Clinton had an academy.

But either way, what do you win if you win a state championship in MAIS 6A? Not but 6 of them, that's like a travel ball tournament. Those big academies really need to be playing in the MHSAA. Probably from 5A on up.

I know some schools do this in Alabama. Not sure if it's all private schools, but I know UMS-Wright won a 4A state championship. But I guess there'd be recruiting concerns, not sure how they do that over there, just roll with it I guess. If someone is willing a pay a player's tuition, it is what it is.

Greenville St. Joe, Carroll, and Indianola all move up to 4A and are in the same district with Winston.

St. Al moves down to 4A, does not play Madison St. Joe, but does play Cathedral and Greenville St. Joe.

Adams Christian also moves down to 4A.

Brookhaven shifts to the southeast Mississippi district with Wayne, Columbia, and Bowling Green (La).

There are 13 4A football playing schools.

Seems like Madison St. Joe played public at one point? Seems I remember them playing at the Capitol City Classic in Jackson many years ago...I may be losing my mind though.

Natchez Cathedral too.

Madison St. Joe's first year in MAIS football will be in Class 5A. They are in a district with East Rankin, Lamar, Leake, Park Place, and Simpson.

Cathedral moved back up to 5A and are in a district with Copiah, Silliman, Central Hinds, and Oak Forest (which moved down from 6A).

Hartfield moves up to 6A.

MRA is taking on Pulaski of Arkansas, Oakland of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Raleigh.

MRA, Jackson Prep, and Jackson Academy are all playing 3A Champions Greenville Christian.

Edit to add MRA to that list after going through the MAIS schedules again.

Agreed. When the largest number of schools that play football are in Class 2A 8-man football and of course there are 17...

When the largest classification has only 6 teams to compete for a state championship it really is meaningless.

Recruiting has become such commonplace in these schools that it’s taken a lot of interest away away from the kids that have gone to school for more than there high school years.

It's like travel ball. You could have 20 teams sign up for tournaments but they bust you up into groups of 4, so half of them get 'rings'. Awful.

Name on the jersey really means nothing anymore.

You and me both and it could still be that way. A can be 8-man and AA and AAA can be the 11-man teams.

Wayne Academy has a lot of traveling to do since there are no 4A football-playing schools within 75 miles of them. It looks like their schedule is made up of all the 11-man MAIS football academies near them except for PCS and Lamar. They also play South Choctaw of the AISA which has long been a rivalry game for them-- usually the season opener I believe.

Porters Chapel Academy dropped down to 2A and they're in a district with Claiborne, Tallulah, and Prairie View academies of Louisiana. Haynesville (where Claiborne is based) is a 300+ mile round trip for them.

A lot of the academies have been playing some MHSAA teams each season (I think they do similar student body sizes) and I've been shocked to see the academies win a good portion of those games.

I do believe there are enough 5A schools that are close enough in enrollment to play with those 6 6A schools and a few 5A schools that could play with the 4A group to eliminate 6A.

Some of you may be aware but last season because Greenwood High chose not to play football, 21 of their players( nearly all seniors) enrolled at Greenville Christian and were bussed the 110 mile round trip each day. GCS was dying on the vine a couple years ago, and because of this influx of talent, they win a State Championship.

Bold strategy to schedule to play 6A schools, if none of the nine seniors from that group do not return.

I don’t keep up with it much since I coach public now, but I played academy ball. A - AA - AAA1 - AAA2. What was wrong with that? It’s wild knowing what some of these schools look like and seeing AAAA beside them when they were A or AA schools.

Pulaski famously the team that does not punt, always goes for 2, and only onside kicks.

Assuming a return trip in 2022, that might be a worth drive up.

This must cause some tension. Say you pay for you son, a decent baseball player, from k on up at Canton Academy. Then a public school kid, who is a good player, but can't get on the field at MC or Germantown, enrolls at Canton in 10th or 11th grade. The transfer takes your kid's spot in the starting line up, you've paid $70k or so in tuition up to that point, in part so your kid can play sports. I bet it creates an uncomfortable situation.

The moral is, if you're in a decent public school district, don't send your kids to private school.

The entire thing needs to merge with MHSAA. Its a joke of a conference

I grew up in Tampa and private and public compete with each other. There is no separation, unless things have changed. But there is open enrollment in Florida so you can go to pretty much any public school you want as long as it’s not at max enrollment and you have transportation. From my days there, private schools pretty dominated south and parts of central (mainly Tampa), especially in baseball and football. The north part of the state seemed to have pubic schools do better. I remember some Pensacola schools being good in football. Pace and niceville always seemed good in baseball.

MS seems different though. Most of these private schools can’t compete with public schools. Seems there is only a handful that could.

How the hell did Winston end up in a division with Carroll, Grville St Joe, and Indianola?

It could be but the largest division really is going to have to be tiny for football or you will end up with most of the teams never having a realistic shot at winning in football. There are just a handful of private schools that are significantly larger than the rest. And those tend to also be some of the few close to decent public schools where people will choose to go there for sports, which allows them to punch above their weight and make the disparity even bigger than you’d expect.

No doubt, my three went the public school route. I have a buddy who coaches travel ball and another who coaches private school baseball, they have some stories. A lot of irrational sports parents out there.

Geography. Winston was the best fit in that district. That district was the best fit for Winston.

4A
District 1 is Clarksdale Lee, North Delta, Marshall, Oak Hill, and Kirk — North
District 2 is Carroll, Indianola, Greenville St. Joe, and Winston — North Central
District 3 is Adams Christian, Clinton Christian, Tri-County, Riverfield, and St. Al— Southwest
District 4 is Bowling Green, Brookhaven, Columbia, and Wayne — Southeast

An argument can be made for Tri-County to be in District 2 but that would have meant that Winston would be in districts 1 or 3 which would have been horrible for them. Tri-County wouldn't have liked it either because they'd be in a different district from the two 4A schools closest to Flora.

The head coach at Glenbrook (David Feaster) has done the same thing for years. He was at Parkway in Bossier City and at Minden HS. Glenbrook is leaving MAIS and will be LHSAA next year.

The real solution is 18 schools is WAY too few to have in one classification. They should consolidate 3A, 4A and 5A into two classifications.

Not tracking how the one has to do with the other. If a kid can't play at a private school, he won't play at a public school.

Also, if you're assuming that going to a public school will be a better experience overall, I'm telling you you're probably wrong.

You seem very plugged in so you know it won't happen. MHSAA has just about done all they can to drive out the schools without kicking them out. The Catholic schools won't survive if you dictate who can go to school there. And MHSAA wants to dictate who can go to school there.

I'm not plugged in anymore. I've been observing it for years as a fan and formerly a freelance writer.

At the rate things are going, 8-man football will continue to be emphasized a bunch more and a lot of old school MPSA people won't like it.

I would not be surprised to see classification contraction (as patdog mentioned earlier) or conversion of 3A to a third 8-man class.

With only 11 schools playing football in 3A, that class as it's currently constituted is not in good shape.

If you're in a good public school district, your kid will generally have a good experience there. And it won't cost you $65,000 to put him through a private school that isn't any better (again if you're in a good district).

concur my oldest went public, took AP classes, scored 34 on the ACT and got tons of scholarships. I doubt going to Jackson Prep would have served him much better.

There's a place for the MAIS but I think for only these rural, smaller academies.

Prep, JA, MRA, PCS, and Hartfield at a minimum should join the MHSAA. Possibly Parklane. That being said, the opposite seems to be happening. A handful of Catholic schools have joined the MAIS from the MHSAA. I wonder if Sacred Heart is next. They're MHSAA independent in football now.

Your kid scored a 34. He/she would make any school better.

Schools are only as good as the students going in them. As far as that goes, Prep is going to be about the best there is in Jackson area, and more consistently. That's how you have to judge. A public school can go up or down, the private schools are generally going to have more parents that care (because they are putting money where their mouth is). Just reality, I know some will not like me pointing this out.
