I'm not totally buying the huge buyout. Makes no sense that a guy would sign a contract with such a huge buyout and then go on a job interviewing spree a week later. Regardless, he's still our coordinator today and that's good news.

If the buyout number is true, my thinking is that the interview is mostly pro forma to see if he would be a fit in the future when money issues aren't as big a concern as they are now.

They're definitely negotiable. If you've got a coach who wants to leave and the only thing preventing it is the buyout, you've got 2 choices. Either negotiate the buyout down or have a disgruntled coach who doesn't want to be there on staff. Option 2 is not a good option.

He wouldn’t be paying the buyout. His new employer would be. He signs a new contract for the added year(s) and bump in pay. If reports are true then State adding a large buyout worked- kept potential teams away from hiring him. I am of the belief though that if an LSU or Texas really wants a guy, a buyout is way down on the list of reasons they don’t hire him. They have plenty of money.

Of course the new employer would pay it. But why would you sign an extension with a large buyout that's going to make you less marketable to new employers right before you start interviewing?

Given what we knew at the time I posted that, the info we had was that LSU sent a plane to bring he and his wife down all day for discussion. He came back and stayed here. That indicates that he didn't want the job.

If Rosie's info is correct, Arnett and Orgeron have some philosophical differences defensively, and LSU couldn't afford Arnett's buyout. I don't buy the philosophical differences personally because LSU wouldn't have put the full court press on him otherwise. They knew what they would be getting with Arnett.

Reading the tea leaves, I'd say LSU wanted Arnett and thought they could get him for a song, but State wouldn't negotiate on the buyout, and the "philosophical differences" angle is cover for LSU to say they never made an offer.

But that's just me.

Maybe it weeds out the posers. I doubt when Arnett signed his extension that he was expecting to get a call from LSU a couple of weeks later, nor was he particularly worried about his marketability. But if he does get calls post-signing...they're probably elite programs and serious players, not just the Marylands and the Rutgers of the world out there "gauging interest."

Option 2 is actually the coach works for his new employer while being paid by the current one until they finally cave into whatever the buyout demands are from the new employer. That’s why they are meaningless in terms of preventing coaches from leaving...the new employer has all the leverage. The final buyout amount strictly depends on how big of dicks the new employer want to be.

When Mullen left, we got a whole $500k from UF. That’s it....for the best coach in our school’s history who was hired away by another school in our same 17ing conference. Was the actual amount in our contract with Mullen much, much higher? Of course it was. But what were we going to do...argue for weeks about it it with UF while other candidates are being snapped up left and right and all our recruits are jumping ship? And if you don’t believe that figure, it was listed out in one of the USA Today annual revenue articles about AD budgets and coaching salaries.

I think Steve said the details were worked out during the middle of the season, I'm not sure when it was actually signed.
