LOUD "music"

As an “old man” who hates the music they play, I gotta say that I barely noticed it….at all. And also I don’t remember the PA announcer at all (let alone being too loud).

perhaps - just guessing here - maybe the sound levels are inconsistent through out the stadium - loud in some areas and not nearly as so in others?

lastly I’ll say, as an “old man” while I hate the music what do you expect them to play - doobie brothers and Molly hatchet? The music is for the kids, they like it. The kids provide the atmosphere (not us “old people”) and if it gets the students pumped I’ll all for it.

but then again, perhaps easy for me to say since, again, I could barely hear it (we were in 105 I believe for reference)

Takes the same amount of time to send an email as it does to make a post on a message board. Nothing will change if Hobbs doesn't know there is a problem. Here is my email to Hobbs:

Dear Pat
I can't believe I'm sending you an email complaining about something. You and your department, coaches and student athletes are doing a great job. So much to be proud of. But the noise level at the stadium has become unbearable. I love loud music and my wife is always telling me to reduce the volume. But the volume at the stadium is just way too much. You literally cannot have a conversation with the person next to you. That's a great thing about going to the game. Discussing the previous play and what might happen next. Can't do it.
I understand that you are shooting to please a certain demographic and looking to create energy in the stadium. Ironically, it does the opposite. With the music blasting nobody is cheering yelling or screaming. Everybody sits there passively.
Well that's my two cents. You should give it a little thought. The Rutgers message boards are full today of posts about the volume
Keep up the good work! Upstream Red team!

Hi Pat,

It’s just not enjoyable to sit next to my wife and friends and not be able to have a conversation. My throat hurts today, NOT from cheering, but from trying to talk to people next to me. I’ll take it one step more and say that I don’t even participate in the RU upstream cheer or 3rd down cheer anymore…I’ll save my voice for talking to my wife, who sits next to me.

This is a huge problem and very easy to fix!

From reading the several threads about the music, the issue isn’t with what’s being played, but its volume. The argument from one side has basically been, “You’re old and therefore have nothing intelligent or relevant to say.” Interesting that that argument wasn’t being made when the board was complaining about an overbearing police presence in the lots, or how much Chris Ash sucked as a head coach, or got on Hobbs when he wasn’t going to bring in Schiano, or the weakness of the concessions, just to cite a few.

Rule #1 of healthy relationships is to try to validate another’s position, then work backward from there, hopefully to a sensible compromise. The NCAA has formal rules about when the music must stop (during plays), and it shouldn’t require a formal rule to make the stadium experience more enjoyable for more people—common sense could be our guide. I’ve yet to see a thread (ever) from students begging for more and louder music between plays. My guess is they would be fine with being able to talk with each other, at least once in a while.

I've been a season ticket holder for 30 years and it seems that yesterday was louder and more frequent than ever before. Really made it hard to enjoy the game. Am I just getting old or has it always been this way? I haven't been to another stadium in a long time. Do they do this everywhere?
Contact the AD…alumni matter MORE than current students…you’ve been through the RU ringer longer and deserve what YOU want.

My wife and daughter will no longer go to games because of the volume. The person I took yesterday said that she would not go again because of the deafening and constant noise.

One thing any audiologist will tell you is that the damage threshold is lower than the pain threshold. If this was hurting your ears, it was doing damage.

The athletic administration listened to us when so many complained about their reluctance to rehire GS. I think we should start calling about this until something is done about it.
Wait, your wife and daughter won’t go so you took another woman 👍. Some people would pay up for this.

Complaining about the play selection is an old man problem. Complaining about the noise level is an everyone problem. We brought our 18 yr. old niece and her friend to the Temple game and of course all they wanted to do was talk to one another, the game was secondary. They even said to me, "wow that's loud". I responded, "Thank You, see honey, it's not just us".

No, it's the new guy in charge of game production. Came from Penn State. Someone said Penn State games are like yesterday.

I've been to about 90% of Rutgers' home games since 1950. A lot of us (VERY) long-time fans and RU donors (and others) HATE the music and its absurd volume. It prevents discussion of the game between plays. We're there to see and talk about the game, not to hear truly painfully loud "music" about which we do not care. I simply don't understand why RU does this. Does anyone honestly believe that a substantial number of people would not attend the games if RU were to stop playing that music or that the presence of that music encourages people to attend? It's simply not necessary.
Honestly, I’m a 50 year fan and 30 year season ticket holder and donor but would tell you “whatever fills the stadium and gets the kids excited”.

Until we are a really a good team (which we are building to, but it’ll take 2 more years likely) any and all excitement and atmosphere that turns on the students and puts asses in the seats is what we need.

if the 15-30 year old demographic likes it, I’m in.

Pot meet kettle. It was ridiculously and unnecessarily too loud. Did you see what I posted? Could not even hear the radio broadcast with an earphone in.
Maybe you highfalutin Club members while hobnobbing with Pat in the caviar line can mention to him about the obnoxious level of the music. This peon could only send an e-mail after the Temple game. Those usually go directly to spam.

I'm 52 and totally agree. The music was too load and happens between every single down. Now, if you tell me that it's necessary in order to get the stadium excited and more people in attendance, then fine, I'll suffer through the music if we can just get more fans. However, I don't believe that's the case.

Bottom line, only wins increase attendance.

That was not on ABC last night. Band played, fans were loud because minimal music (probably not at a tinnitus producing volume) playing between plays.

You're funny. You are talking about the 1766 guy, who every week is touting what a great fan he is and what a crappy fan everyone else is. Try some context. There is a very valid point that THIS YEAR, the volume level in certain sections of the stadium is ridiculously loud. Ear splitting loud. This is a more important issue than your silly horse video fascination and color of the horse because the volume levels can causing hearing damage.

We need fan$ in the Stadiums. Having blasting noise with out of control decibel levels all game long will keep both new and old fans away. Want the Rutgers Athletic Department to get out of debt ..Brilliant.

Just for a reference, the OSHA standard for an eight hour day is an average sound level of 85dB or below. 70dB or below is considered “safe.” The levels in section 125 Saturday averaged 97dB for minutes at a time. You can argue all you want about this being an old man thread, but the PA really is too loud. Hearing damaging too loud. This topic is not a “get off my lawn” rant, this is a legitimate health issue.

I’m nowhere near an old man, and it was painfully loud in section 122 far away from the scoreboard. It honestly makes the stadium experience pretty frustrating having such loud blasting music. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the music at times (though it’s played too much), having literal pain from the sound is not at all fun. There’s a balance that should be struck and right now, it’s not there.

Why do you think your volume whine is more acceptable than horse neigh

Section 109 ranged from 97 to 101 db in the 30 minutes before the game and through the first quarter. Our band was in the 85 range. The only upside was that I found out my phone had an app for this. After 40 years of going to games I will not be back anytime soon.

I happened to stay in my seat during the whole half time to watch the band and it seems to me that our band is as big and as good as it's ever been. They practice all week long just to be shout out by the music. Let them play.

Not sure why you quoted me since I don’t think your post was in reaction to mine

whatever

I’ll repeat the main point (question really) of my post: is the volume very different throughout the stadium? We were in 105 and I can tell you, I don’t remember the music at all. And I think I WOULD have noticed it since from what I could hear I hated ;) but really it was certainly not close to too loud for us.

so again - any possibility is it too loud in some areas and barely noticeable in others?

I ask because maybe the solution isn’t just “turn it down” but maybe it’s also to focus/spread the sound in a better way. So maybe the solution is more speakers spread throughout the stadium would allow the music to be played at a more reasonable volume?

Just because the sound system is good enough to go that high doesn't mean we have to use it on every play. You can use the extra volume on defense during critical parts of the game.

So we are 3 and 0 because the volume is unbearably loud....uh yeah that makes sense.
I totally agree I could not talk about plays to my friend right next to me because the music was so loud...it has to change.

There is a belief that the fans need to be “entertained”. The game on the field, the occasional band play, cheer and fight song are not enough. This mentality started with minor league baseball. It was entertainment and then a game. The NBA has adopted this mentality.
Rutgers should drop the idea.

100dB is the equivalent to a power lawn mower or a jackhammer. That's too loud, particularly when it's over a 3 hour period.

An I don't think it's old men worried about their 5 year olds, though you never know.

Simplify to multiply.

Use music to get the crowd to be loud. Watching the Penn State game last night, they use "7 Nation Army" to lead the crowd to all do the same chant over and over, but did it extremely well. It should lead the crowd to cheer, not played in place of the crowd noise.

Pick a few songs and make them ours. Just like "Jump Around" is associated with Wisconsin, "Enter Sandman" with Virginia Tech, make "Knight Pulse" our thing like we did with our 3rd down. Pick something and go with it.

We had so many more songs coming just when coming out of the tunnel. It was like the DJ/game-day operations has a new toy and want to play as many songs as possible.

you make good points. RU used to do that - during Schiano 1.0 we had some of that - e.g., the BonJovi kid. they used to play a few key songs that got the crowd going. agree that the music now does not seem purposeful.
