LOUD "music"

I've been to about 90% of Rutgers' home games since 1950. A lot of us (VERY) long-time fans and RU donors (and others) HATE the music and its absurd volume. It prevents discussion of the game between plays. We're there to see and talk about the game, not to hear truly painfully loud "music" about which we do not care. I simply don't understand why RU does this. Does anyone honestly believe that a substantial number of people would not attend the games if RU were to stop playing that music or that the presence of that music encourages people to attend? It's simply not necessary.

I'm 36 and totally agree.

It gets more obnoxious every year... feels so mickey mouse. If you notice, other than when someone on microphone forces one, there are no R-U chants anymore because it's impossible to start with there being constant noise.

I'm younger than you, and I LOVE loud music, but not at college football games at the frequency and volume it is now played. We are in the club, seated at about the 15-20 yard line of the North end zone, and it is so loud, that when I have one earphone in my ear on the side facing the big scoreboard, I cannot hear the radio broadcast at full volume. It is ridiculously too loud. It is as if every nanosecond is filled with some loud song from the 80s or 90s, music of my era, but I did not come to a Rutgers game to get a barrage of the greatest loud music anthems of the 80s and 90s.

i wonder if schiano is in charge. Ideally you’d want the place to be fun and a house of horrors for the opponent.

It’s okay for some stuff when the students sing along and Don’t Stop Believin’ and even intros but the constant barrage takes away from the college experience. Let the band play!!!!
And yes it’s too LOUD!!!!!!!

And they've totally screwed up defensive third downs, leaving little time for the air guitars and especially for fan involvement in making noise to disrupt the offence.

It was much better yesterday. But the music was cut off so quickly, the crowd hardly had time to get into it.

It’s all been going that way for a long time, apparently the commercial impulse to “entertain” if you want to call it that, trumps all. I’ve gone to NBA games with my older son and can’t take the absurd volume during game breaks. I was at PNC last night to listen to The Black Crowes and Dirty Honey, that’s about my limit on volume and would never suggest that for a sporting event.

PA volume is way too high in our section 124. Took my 5 yr old to his 1st game and had to leave in 1st period as he was covering his ears and I want him to come back. I guess my bad for no headphones (RU doesn't sell them). I like being able to talk to my neighbors and hear the band. Don't need a club experience.

If you are a season ticket holder you probably received an email with a survey of your experience....let them know about it. I pointed out that it was too loud and I'm in section 125.
I don't get those e-mails any more.

EDIT- I see that we got it, and it is embedded in the Rutgers announcement that they won. IIRC, we used to get a separate e-mail, but could be mistaken on this.

Knightshift, after those odd requests about our cheerleaders, you’re lucky they let you in the stadium, let alone get surveys.

My wife and daughter will no longer go to games because of the volume. The person I took yesterday said that she would not go again because of the deafening and constant noise.

One thing any audiologist will tell you is that the damage threshold is lower than the pain threshold. If this was hurting your ears, it was doing damage.

The athletic administration listened to us when so many complained about their reluctance to rehire GS. I think we should start calling about this until something is done about it.

Stop complaining. 3-0 and we get this from you. Be better

Pre game the average sound level hovered at 97dB for minutes at a time. The highest level was 102.7dB. These levels were measured with several iphone apps, that while somewhat limited by the quality of the microphone in the phone, among other things, are pretty accurate. They track well with the sound meters in the digital audio workstation I use. (Logic Pro). I sit in section 125. This isuue is not an "old man thing." The PA really is measurably a little too loud and should be turned down a bit.

My hearing is completely shot.
They don't play anything that we know.
If this is what students like then we are in big trouble.
That's why the stadium was only 60% full yesterday.

It's not good for the horse either.
That horse wants to get the hell out of the stadium so fast when it enters that it can easily win the Triple Crown.

Maybe it's where I am sitting or being someone who loves going to clubs and concerts but I didn't think it was very loud.

I mostly thought it was cheesy.

I think there's less RU chants because they typically come in with big plays in competitive games. Thankfully we haven't had a real competitive game yet! If tOSU is a close game you will absolutely hear it.

this is such an old man thread. give it a rest
Okay, I'll bite. Given that "old men" are the most represented (and long-suffering) fans at games and the largest donors by far, they are relevant. Not solely relevant, but relevant. As a form of argument (though yours was a statement, not an argument), anytime a football board, which is predominantly male and an average age well above 30, any generalized complaint could be categorized as an "old man" complaint. The validity of the complaint is what matters, not who is making it.

But to the argument at hand. The games were more interesting when we could discuss the plays before and after they've been run. I will still go to games in spite of the inability to talk to anyone around me between plays, but not being able to engage with those I've gone with or those who sit around me reduces the enjoyment of being at the games. A creative compromise of some sort could be reached, such as keeping it loud before our opponents' 3rd downs but less volume at other times. When so many people express a problem with something, it warrants being considered.

Out of curiosity, what section are your seats in?

I've been a season ticket holder for 30 years and it seems that yesterday was louder and more frequent than ever before. Really made it hard to enjoy the game. Am I just getting old or has it always been this way? I haven't been to another stadium in a long time. Do they do this everywhere?
