I am all for legally changing that stupid flag. But if the Legislature just decides to do it outside of the will of the people, so be it. But I will also be for the Legislature censoring your free speech, and anyone else on here that thinks the legislature should go around the people. I have some great flag ideas that exclude anything relative to the stupid confederate flag. But we need to vote. If you can get away with voting multiple times to make sure it is removed, I don’t care. But I trust the people who supported that thing in 2001 have mostly passed away or at least are too senile to even vote this time. But give the people of this State some viable options to replace that horrid thing by letting them vote.

What the **** are you saying?
- You mention you support legally changing the flag.
-You then accept that legislation may end up changing the flag instead of citizens voting.
- Then you support the legislature violating an individual's right to speech.
- After that you claim a vote of the people is needed.
- You end with saying people 20 years ago are senile and confirm people need to vote.

You are a bundle of confusion.

Pop quiz: Which state changed their flag due to criticism of C.S.A. symbology on their flag and actually replaced it with a version of stronger C.S.A. symbology and no one ever mentioned it? And there is no mention of protests or boycotts of their state because of the new flag.

Georgia! It boggles my mind why no one mentions this, but I suppose the battle flag is the only one that is etched in the public consciousness.

What would be great and simple is the Bonnie Blue. An update would be a combo of it with the Stennis where the Bonnie is bordered on the left and right with the red bars. Simple, unique, and historic.
Like others, I long for the day when I can wear my homestate’s flag with pride.
Bonnie Blue flag is also a confederate symbol.

I've been living out of state for the last 3 years, and I can tell you that I've never once heard anything positive about the flag. Many times I've been around someone when they learned that has the Confederate flag in it, so it's not a universally known thing, but from my experience, it's universally been viewed negatively or as confirming stereotypes.

Put me in this group.

If it's going to be decided by popular vote, I think it has to be a two part vote. You need to have one "Replace? yes or no" vote (maybe during primary season) and then another vote with visual choices in the fall.

One of the reasons the last flag change vote in 2001 failed was because the alternative was not well received (see below).

If you can get a vote that a change needs to be made, THEN give alternatives, you can at least get rid of the current flag and hammer out the details on how a new flag would look.

ETA: That's if the 'yes/no' question has to be a popular vote. I would much rather the legislature force the change and do a popular vote on the choices.

Agreed. The first vote to definitively change it has to come from the legislature though. Then, you can hold a public referendum on the second one....let the people decide which new one they like the best.

Yep, swapped 13 stars and bars with 13 stars and no bars.

Georgia has changed their flag 6 times since 1902. Their legislature changed it without a voter referendum until the current flag. Basically voters were given a choice of keeping the flag they were using that had replaced the battle flag or choose the one they are currently using. Voters voted overwhelmingly for the current one.

No one is blaming the flag for Mississippi’s problems. But if you can’t see that it is a step in the right direction then I don’t know what to tell you
