Long Past Time for Some Red Lights

It has long appeared that Pike has given shooting green lights to almost all who are on the floor. Yes there is some positive to that, but the wasted possessions outweigh that. Time to expect some modicum of judicious shot selection from the players. In particular:

Harper--Should refrain from almost all 3s unless wide wide wide open. Good slashing and should do that and pull ups.

Issa--What can be said. Again he LIKES to shoot the three, but no proof he is good at it. Defends well at times with length and runs the floor. Should have limits also of only wide wide wwide open 3.

Geo--Waaaay too many super deep 3s. He should be told to shot the open 3 but have some shot selection consideration.

Mathis--same as Geo. Open 3s but no bombs or forces.

Caleb--Open 3s but for a pg too much shoot first. Good energy but shot selection should be a focus.

Pike at this point needs to work on shot selection as that clearly has not been a focus.

With such an O deficiency you just cant waste possessions. Agree with transition as much as we can but wasting possessions seems to have not been a concern and perhaps the long leash needs to be tightened a little and players forced to focus on what they do best such as Mathis and Harper taking it to the hole and developing mid range games.

I think Pike is hoping, praying someone gets hot and makes a few. So he lets them all shoot.

Well said. Right now however, no one seems to be hot or consistent. Pike needs them to shoot judiciously as you stated, but not have them so afraid to shoot that they'll pass up open shots.

Yep he is hoping someone gets hot--we all do.

But is wasting possessions with a Geo 23footer or an Issa clang better than Harper or Mathis or Geo driving either to the hole or pulling up? I don't think so.

Recall Sanders made his big leap when he learned to pull up and shoot only open 3s. His better shot selection was evident down the stretch last year.

No one says put the cuffs on (ok well maybe Harper or Issa contested 3s) but our shot selection has been poor. Training young guys in better shot selection will have dividends. What is occurring is wasted possessions and not working.

Take a page out of gene hackman’s book and mandate a number of passes before shooting. We don’t have a jimmy chitwood out there.

The Rutgers offense is getting progressively worse with each succeeding game .With Baker's shooting woes Rutgers really has no go to scorer right now regardless if the team is playing home or away.In contrast Maryland had a nice blend of inside/outside scoring and showed their talent mismatch at every position.I really don't know how Rutgers can compete in the B1G for the remainder of the season with the offense so futile. The last 20 points Rutgers scored was when the outcome of the game was long over.

Remember when people said our 3-pt shooting could not possibly be worse than last year?

It really is amazing how bad our offenses have been in both football and basketball for the past several years. Not another P5 school with such combined futility in the two major sports.

Yup. I still can't believe I was wrong about that, but here we are.

Harper really needs to be counseled to cut down the threes. Just not a pull up 3pt shooter.

A good slasher. He and Mathis need to be counseled to slash and develop the mid range game. Too many wasted possessions on bad threes in first half today.

The low post game has been excellent and can open up some OPEN-not contested or transition-threes. A little more red light action for Thiam and Harper from three would not inhibit them but actually spur their growth as overall bball players.

Rutgers lack of consistent 3 point shooting makes it easier to defend and harder to slash to the basket by crowding the driving lanes.

Agree with OP except McConell. He can get to the basket and stop for a mid range jumper or floater. He is much better penetrating than Geo and should be looking to take it to the hoop even more.

Guilty on the shooting thing being better this year. Thiam Kiss Harper especially all under performing

Remember the Harper redshirt crowd? Ha

MacConnel has been quite a nice surprise.

Really like Harper when he takes it off the dribble or shoots step back jumpers. Very much stand behind initial premise that he needs counseling on shot selection re 3s. He made one when he was OPEN and feet set. The others were clanged when in transition or on the move.

Look how much better Corey got when he focused on the mid range j. Harper can see improvement too if he became more conscious of that.
