I saw the kid play live last year and video is a joke when it comes to seeing a players true talent. Smothers is a hell of alot faster than the video shows. Like I've said before with Smothers, if I have to compare him to anyone it would be a cross between T-Mart for his speed and Milton for his field awareness, passing and a well above avarage ability to read defenses as well as lightning fast deliberate decisiveness. Yes Smothers is faster than Luke and a better runner as well. Smothers has almost the same sick top end gear that Taylor had, not quite but damn close and very dangerous in the open field as he posesses ankle breaking moves and when he runs, he looks like a cross between an RB and receiver. Logan is taylor made for this offense as the one he ran in HS is almost identical to this one except the terminology. Let's just all pray he stays healthy in his time here.
This reads like a parody of someone trying to hype a player up. Except I think you’re dead serious.

Milton’s passing combined with T-Mart’s speed? Moves of a RB/WR hybrid? So Wan’Dale? And somehow Bama and the rest of the SEC let him get away?

I have hope that he’ll be an improvement over what we have now, but if he falls short of winning the Heisman then you overhyped him.

No argument here, I've been vocal since his recruitment that he is the future. Doesn't change the fact that the portal could help.

I heard Smothers threw a football from the 50 yard line at Memorial Stadium through the south end zone and it hit the sower on the Capitol building. In the hands.
The Sower dropped it, but it was after a TV timeout so we shouldn't worry about it. It will get fixed.

Some guy called into Nick Handley’s show on 590 today and basically said that he has a source that he trusts that told him that Smothers will be starting Friday. I’m guess his source is either Eric in Scottsdale or Sir Yacht.

Nah his source was the janitor. He overheard Scott during his daily Florida Georgia Line and peach Skoal rubdown session.

The reason Frost won't, he made a promise to Smothers that he wouldn't over recruit him and by bringing in a tranfer portal QB he would be breaking that promise. People just need to be patient. It's kind of a smart move not playing him this year as why do we want to shoot ourselves in the head as to say by tipping our had with him and giving teams game film of him for next year so that teams will have ample time to prepare for him instead of him trotting out next year and teams aren't gonna know exactly what they're gonna face. This year is a freebee, next year is when things will start counting again.

I have a feeling our first offensive play against Rutgers will be Smothers to Manning for a 75 yard TD.

Get this thing started right.

For what its worth i know someone that has seen him play live and he said he's absolutely legit and will be very good at Nebraska.

He switched High Schools and when you do that, it's like starting over and had he played all 4 years at the same school the big boys that tried to come after him last second would've been on him way earlier as there would've been a full body of work for teams to scout and often when players transfer High Schools tend to kind of all throught the cracks and Logan was a 4* could he have been rated higher had he not transferred? maybe, but we'll never know.

This reminds me of this post about Martinez from last year:

Has an NFL arm like Brook. Decent speed like a Turner Gill. Leadership and swagger of a Tommie Frazier. Toughness and smarts of a Scott Frost. Heisman ability like Crouch. NFL ability of a Vince Ferragamo but better. Will be NU's 1st ever 1st round draft pick as a QB. GBR

I have high hopes for him. He certainly could be great here. Just was critiquing the exaggerated claims made by the poster I quoted. I remember Tanner Lee being talked up the same way.

His running ability looks to be legit. Impressive top end speed and juking ability, no doubt.

I have questions about his throwing. His passes on tape look elementary and lack zip. Doesn’t mean the zip is nonexistent or that he can’t make complex Power 5 throws... maybe he just didn’t need to use it in HS. But I’m skeptical that he’s just another athlete taking snaps like McCaffrey appears to be, not an actual QB. Of course he’s played QB longer than McCaffrey has, but that doesn’t mean he’s able to make Big Ten throws. Hope he puts my skepticism to shame.

I've heard that one before.... for pretty much every commit we've ever had.

We'll see what happens. If I were to bet money on it, I'd say the kid ends up being more successful than AM or McCaffrey. But that's because the bar isn't high. I think you're right to be excited about his running ability. He certainly has elite speed, and his wiggle seems to be there as well.

I think you're overvaluing his passing ability. See my post directly above this. And again, if he's as good as you're making him out to be he'll win the Heisman if healthy. That's quite a bold prediction. And if he's truly that good, I don't think changing schools a couple times in HS would've kept the big boys from offering from the start. I think the big boys see an athlete who's a limited passer.

when I saw him, his running ability was legit.. his passing left a lot to be desired.. there were times it was like the kid was heaving a small watermelon down field, late.

It's probably better to let what he does here speak for itself.. so I don't mean to knock the kid.. but I'm not going to feed you all a bunch of hype either.

I'm not sure we have a decent passer on the team, (except maybe Haarberg), and if once again Frost is making promises to kids, resulting in bad things for the team overall, then I'll probably lose it.

Unfortunately, we heard the same thing about our top 2 QB's, which hasn't panned out yet. As always, we should believe it when we see it, and not a second sooner.

I watched him play live back in Oct 2019

We should honestly delete this thread and quit discussing how good he is. This will just give our opponents a heads up and we will be better to blind side them with his awesomeness.

Research is your friend buddy, go look who tried last second to try and get him away from us, tOSU, Bama, Clemson are some of this biggest.

or is this just a radio rumor?
Well regardless, it's a damn shame IMO that he didn't get some live snaps this season. Didn't need to start or play a lot but he should have gotten out on the field during a game. It's a motivational factor since there's zero eligibility issues in play.

Did I ever tell you about the time I went horseback riding with Smothers, but there weren’t any horses around? Well, Smothers throws a saddle on my back and rides me around Wyoming for three days. Well, wouldn’t you know it, my stamina increases with each day and I develop tremendous leg muscles. So anyway, Smothers decides to enter me in the Breeders’ Cup, right, under the name Turkish Delight. And I’m running in second place, and I’m running and I break my ankle! They’re about to shoot me. Then someone from the crowd yells out, God bless him, ‘Don’t shoot him, he’s a human.'

To Logan Smothers, the best damn quarterback on the roster!

Can confirm, he had some bigtime late suitors, I followed his recruiting somewhat closely. I am and always have been (woo woo) all aboard the Logan Smothers hype train.

He is legitimately fast, he was a sprinter in HS and you can google his track times simple and easy. He's not Crouch fast but he's close. There was something that always bugged me about Luke's film but I always like Smothers on film.

I'm trying to guard my heart though after putting hopes into AM and LM only to see them look hopeless as passers. The injuries with Logan worry me, he's not a big beast of a kid, you hope he can make it through full seasons without breaking bones.

He'll be in harm's way with how he'll be asked to run the ball and by the nature of being a QB who is asked to stand back there while 300 lb dudes try to hit you as hard as they can. The more football I watch the more that saying "the greatest ability in football is availability" jumps out at me.

Smothers makes a lot of sense! You have game film on the other two qbs..neither has taken clear handle on the position. It would be good to know all qbs you have on roster before off season. We could be players in transfer market as well. It would be good to know exactly what you have. Especially if his strength is quick decision making like frost has said..we need to see if he can make those quick decisions in a game.

Yep. If we start Smothers, our first opponent next season (assuming the BIG has one) would have to prepare for 3 different QB's!

The notion of not playing a kid to keep him a secret or trying to hide the fact that somebody is injured is the DUMBEST aspect in all of football. You gonna do something with the kid that isn't running, passing, or catching the ball?

If he's banged up or not ready then ok, don't play him so you don't break his body or his confidence. But if you think you're keeping a secret that's going to give you a competitive advantage please STFU and go spend your time asking your OL coach why your OL look like they don't really enjoy hitting guys and driving them through the whistle.
