"We are no longer inching toward autocracy; we are sprinting. Another brutal reality: The guardrails we have to protect decency and democracy are failing us.

Who will step up and restore any sense of checks and balances?"

sure, and I'm in my constitutional rights to hire 20,000 people to sing a song insulting your mother.
But its not fiscally responsible of me, accomplishes a bunch of negative in the world.
Like at some point, you have to question how sane it is to do what he's doing. Not even considering the constitution, just objectively, he's doing marshall law jr. for fun and games.
not arguing with you. Just attempting to add a little sanity and accuracy to statements being made that trump's actions are unconstitutional or illegal . They might be dumb and fiscally irresponsible but, as of right now, not unconstitutional or illegal.

Wait, you think the amount of taxes paid by undocumented immigrants reported is wrong?
The very word “undocumented” would suggest that there’s probably some accuracy issues with the reporting. There’s millions here we don’t even know about. Are you suggesting that we have a dialed in accurate number of how much money illegals are paying in income tax? Tell me more.

I don't know if that figure is right or wrong. But what I do know, or think I know based on news reports, is that we don't know how many undocumented people there are in the country. We don't know how many of them are working and have ss numbers. We don't know how many employers have hired undocumented people and how much they are being paid. Our government computer/software programs don't talk to each other to determine if correct people are paying correct taxes.

But we're certain that undocumented people are paying $100 billion in taxes.

Yes we do have an accurate number of how much money undocumented immigrants pay in taxes.

You seem confused on some of the most basic facts.

well, I'm open to learning where I might be wrong. I've been wrong before and if I'm wrong here, it won't be the last time

Wait til you hear the response lol. I guess I’m supposed to believe that people that aren’t legally allowed to work or have SSNs are the most accurately assessed tax base in America. Who knew???

Laughable. Their line of thinking is so childish.

Are you suggesting the government has no idea who they're taking tax money from?

He doesn't know what he's suggesting, he's just rage posting all over the place.
I don't think this was directed at me, but I have a response anyway.

I'm not suggesting the government has no idea who they're taking tax money from, I'm suggesting that the overall government doesn't know a lot of things about undocumented folks in the US, to include how much money they make and where they work (in general, of course they know some) that's it's extremely unlikely that they know exactly how much money has been paid by undocumented people in the country nor how much undocumented people should be paying.

I'm not suggesting some undocumented people don't pay taxes, just that, IMO, a definitive statements that undocumented people pay $100 billion in taxes - which based on the $5trillion taken in 2024 is an extremely small % - can't be so definitive.

I seem to recall MAGA window lickers having mental breakdowns about when the government controls the means of production. There was some word that encapsulates this, but I can’t quite put my finger on it
Dude... That's the OLD REPUBLICAN PARTY. Remember when they were all about free trade and state's rights? Conservatives would have gone ape **** if the government started taking interest in private companies and activating the National Guard at the Federal level and sending them to other states. The difference is that this is DONALD TRUMP. He can do and say whatever and the Republican won't say a word... That's just the way it is. He IS the Republican party.

Personally, I don't have a problem with this. First and foremost, who in the hell ever said that the Government couldn't turn a profit? I've no problem with the US taking interest in private companies. Personally I'd LOVE to see the Government taking over some big Pharma businesses and dropping those prices to a reasonable level. I feel the same about Tariffs. Nope, it's NOT going to make prices lower, but it will bring back manufacturing to the US and make us less dependent on others AND provide jobs. Paying a bit more for that seems reasonable. I'm just surprised (not really) that the supposed conservatives here are on board with it.

Remember when Michelle Obama wanted to federally mandate more healthy school lunches for instance? They were screaming socialism all over the place. Now we are going nation wide under RFK jr make America Health again. And not a peep. Again, it's whatever Trump wants whenever he wants it. Again, I've no problem with making America healthy again... I do think he's WAY off base on vaccines, but who can argue with fewer processed foods and more healthy choices?

First of all, I'm conservative, and I have a problem with government ownership of the means of production. Consider the DoD getting a stake in Lockheed. That company competes for multi billion dollar contracts against other companies. How will anybody ever know if some special consideration has been given to Lockheed because the government owns a part of them. Now, it might be a different story with the government, which provides funding via grants to universities for research, getting a piece of the patent for the research generated with tax dollars. That's two different stories for me. As for tariffs, I'm not a fan. I do have to admit though that so far I have been surprised at the effect. I predicted higher prices, which has not happened (yet). But, companies cannot absorb the added costs without an impact on bottom lines. And less earnings leads to lower stock prices.

Not all conservatives are on board ..look at Rand Paul.

I have a little different take on Michelle's lunches. Great idea, but a loser in effect. Districts were required to provide certain healthy foods on each plate. At the end of the line were trash cans where kids deposited the majority of those foods. Anecdotal I know, but another great government idea that just didn't work out as planned.

Like you I have a problem with republicans inability to push back on some of Trump's actions. But, they are in fear of their constituents. The reps want to be reelected and right now it's the constituents who are driving the trump phenomenon. The majority seem to support trump even if they disagree with some of his policies/actions.
