Zap you may be right BUT BL was a backup fir awhile. Just saying Lewis has not played enough to judge, and he may need a yr of experience. However i have seen our other qbs, so no reason not to play lewis.

I agree, I said earlier the only way a QB could be impressive would be if he could run away from the pass rush and make people miss.
There's no time to do anything remotely conventional
Lewis did do that early in this game. Compared to Bolin's backpedaling and throwing off his back foot I was "impressed". A lot of points made on both sides here.. yes, at times he looked like that high school star who didn't realize that most of the people on the other side of the ball were bigger stars on their respective HS teams.

Our OC should have been able to identify a QB that he could build a scheme around. But I know with past OCs I would wonder aloud.. does that play work in practice? I cannot imagine calling plays that do not work in practice.. so, is it that we do not practice correctly.. or that the D cannot simulate what they will face on gameday? Or is it something worse.. like some here have suggested.. that we just want to run clock to make things look closer this year as some sign of "progress", after last year not caring about score to make it look as bad as possible... to make it easier to show progress in following years....

I disagree. You can condescend all you want, but I'm not blind - the kid is NOT quick and he is NOT elusive. He's not a scrambler. He might be a perfectly fine rusher, but he's not a scrambler.
I agree, he will be a good runner between the tackles but he's not going to out run people to the sideline or make people miss in space.

What he will be able to do is shake off a defender who might get through the line and complete the throw like Jim Druckenmiller. Without first string reps in practice we probably will not see his best until next year.

I agree Lewis has not played enough, but our O line has, even a straight read option will get blown up by whiffs more often than not, I don't think his skill set will ever work here.
BL was a back up, but the moment he stepped onto the field, he was our best player

Jabu Lovelace part2??

As an aside, Terrence Shawell turned out to be a pretty good basketball player for the Alvernia Crusaders:

What's frustrating about the Gio situation is, playing Lewis is by no means about helping the team win this year. Gio's college career, and RU's 2017 are being sacrificed in the hope of preparing Lewis for 2018 and beyond.

I'm one to put starting Brolin in that mix as well. Knowing Brolin is gone after this year sets the table for Lewis to start next year. When again, the best QB might not be playing because we are building for the future.
James or Josh?

His boot, step up to avoid pressure, and completion out into the flat was terrific feet, good hips and shoulders, and great awareness and placement. He needs time to adjust to being a college QB but that play showed me that he can be a good QB.

A QB that can run between the tackles is what makes this offense effective. It doesn't count on him outrunning people to the sideline.

I think Lewis needs to slim down a little bit to get quicker. He looks like a legit 250. Have him slim down to a leaner 230 and I think he becomes more of a dual threat. You give him a solid rb and some speed at wr and he can run the read option. We don't have the OL to have him hold the ball for longer than 3 seconds.

THAT is seriously on the coaches. I couldn't believe some of the passes we tried where the QB (mostly Bolin) had to stand back there and wait for a play to develop. Meanwhile plenty of teams have QBs throw passes within 3 second to spots on the field where the WR will be.. even if he is covered.. that timing pattern can even be practiced where the QB watches another WR the whole way for 2-3 seconds then turns to fire to the other side to a spot. And you choose which side with pre-snap reads to figure out where the safeties are leaning.. what the coverage looks like and which side will have an open space to throw to. And we need those on 1st down play-action where they can legitimately expect a run. Its crazy to go into a game vs OSU.. with GS as DC.. and expect you are going to have time for slow developing plays.

DC Jefferson=Lewis.

DC was a decent QB who eventually moved to TE. The kid was moved around like a laboratory project.

Our receivers are horrible. Let's hope that Ahmir Mitchell is good.
Mitchell and Melton are going to have to be the guys in the next few years or it's going to continue to be ugly. Whens the last time we've had two 4 star starting WRs from NJ?

You have never said anything positive about anything Rutgers ever. How in the world are people disclaiming Lewis a bust in his true freshman season against a top 10 team? He's played in TWO GAMES!
Didn't that happen to D.C. Jefferson? The kid had a strong arm, decent accuracy and a body LB's couldn't bring down. Please tell me where Lewis is different than D.C. Jefferson.

I'm not saying he's a bust but let's be honest, the moment a Tom Savage type gets recruited he's riding the pine.

Jefferson threw really awkward from what I remember. I think Lewis will be a solid QB. He can chuck it and you can't arm tackle him. He just needs to calm down

He was thrown into a bad situation against Ohio State. Should've let him throw against Morgan State not Ohio State.

The difference is DC Jefferson was a much better tight end then he was QB. Lewis is not going to play any other position but QB.

All the fans were clamoring for Lewis to play now that he played and played poorly you are bitching that he was put in .

I thought he should've redshirted. I'm not bitching that they put him in. But that's a rough game for him to be in. I think Gio should be the starter.

You expect Cam Newton when you put a true freshman behind a mediocre OL against one of the Top 5 DLs in Div. 1? That's ridiculous.

Saying the OL is mediocre is very generous. My hope is that Clark, Vretman and maybe some others can help make that group solid enough to allow for a true evaluation of the QBs and RBs.

Remember how surprised Kill sounded after the UW game when he spoke about the OL?

of course it does. Im not knocking him just decribing his running style not his fit in the offense. He's not a Randle el type, he's more of a Tim Tebow power runner type

Yes Rice and Leonard were special from the first time they touched it, but qb is a different animal.

Ryan Hart was one of our most productive qbs and it was hard to look worse than his first action at cuse.

That being said, there was nothing to feel like magic will be there. To me it's unknown, and I would like to see him get full series (no yo yo ing during a series). Let's see what happens when its not obvious he is gonna run or clear 3rd and long. I think we will see him being effective with the benefit of surprise and the full although pared down playbook.

if you play him every snap vs PSU and Michigan.... he will be destroyed physically and mentally. So what is Ash supposed to do.. this is why he get paid his money. I think Gio isyour best bet.

Savage showed a little his true frosh year. Savage was better than Lewis when he came in. Lewis is really raw. I still think Lewis will be good but a lot of people were making him out to be Cam Newton before he got here. He's not.

I have no idea if Lewis is the answer but not exactly fair to compare to a future NFL QB that had 2 NFL OT's a 3 year starter at C, Sanu, Brown, Joe M's best year etc...look at what happened the following year to Savage when that OL was gone. May be a better comparison

here is the other thing...OL and QB are most likely the two toughest positions to just come in as a true freshman and be good to very good. Even AD was not "good" as a true freshman. RB though, may be one of the easiest positions to just come in and be good. And then again, we are talking about two NFL RB's. Not every college player has to be NFL level. To be honest, I havent been to practices so it would be impossible for me to comment on Lewis's throwing ability. Anyone else that does not go to practice regular, has no idea either. As for running, yes, looks to slow to be a true dual threat. So, he better learn to throw first and run 2nd. Can he get better as the game slows down a little and hopefully we get an OL that will work well for him? There is no way to know yet. But starting next year, he will start seeing some very athletic QB's coming in so he is going to have to learn fast.

he reminds me a bit of ex Minn QB Mitch "Blood" Leidner.. a big guy who runs better than he throws... though not necessarily fast, just tough to bring down...

How did Freshman all American (and now NFL QB) Tom Savage look in his sophomore year behind a sub par o-line? At this point, we just don't know Lewis will be.
