This thread is so stupid, lewis is the real deal. He has been in college all of 1 month and played minutes on the field. He is young and inexperienced, playing behind an avg ol vs one of the nations top dl. I think he needed to get more time in occ games. Either way he will be fine. Even my fav Brian leonard took time before starting....... their kids

Haskins is the real deal.

There's a definite difference.

his mechanics throwing the ball are not good right now..long arm release, allmost baseball style.I thought putting him in game when 7-0 and RU at 30ish yard line wasnt a good spot for him.Too much pressure and expectation at that point of game..
True freshman..hard to tell at this point combined with WRs who couldnt start on Monmouth .

Bo Melton would start at Monmouth

Non-throwing shoulder I think.
---
not a shock.... he runs the ball like a running back would, in the sense that he wants every yard he can.... this opens him up to getting tackled hard. I thought he took a real
beating yesterday and his being hurt a bit, again, not a shock

You know, a lot of us watched his state championship game on TV last year. He couldn’t make a throw. He could throw it 100mph, but he was so innaccurate. Defenses don’t respect his arm...and neither does our coaching staff.

He’s not ready. #FreeGio
Been saying this since EMU.

Don't know what all the crowing was about in the preseason. He's Oden part 2. As bad as Flood was at recruiting QBs, Ash's selections have been a disaster. No one can get it done through the air: Allen, Oden, Bolin, now Lewis.
I think the disaster is Ash force feeding these kids who are not the least bit ready to do anything besides run.

Brian Leonard and Ray Rice were special the first time they ever touched the ball, it was obvious from day 1.
I don't see specialness here.
But QB is different.

And while I don't usually fully agree with this argument, there was really not much to work with last night. OSU applied a ton of pressure, and receivers were not getting open.

I agree, I said earlier the only way a QB could be impressive would be if he could run away from the pass rush and make people miss.
There's no time to do anything remotely conventional

Savage showed a little his true frosh year. Savage was better than Lewis when he came in. Lewis is really raw. I still think Lewis will be good but a lot of people were making him out to be Cam Newton before he got here. He's not.

He obviously has the tools to be a good QB but he needs to improve accuracy or it doesn’t matter. Right now 50% of his passes are amazing and 50% are terrible. There is some hope but he needs to continue to work on his footwork and mechanics, every day from now till camp next year, the we’ll see what he is.

And this speaks to why he should not be playing as a freshman. Ash is forcing the issue and it's a detriment to the team. He did the same thing last year.

I don't think I've seen anything that resembled amazing. But it's a tiny sample size. How many throws does he have to his credit? 15?

I had heard Lewis came in a little chubby. He's obviously more of a big bodied punishing runner then a quick elusive. But I think slimming him down and making him more athletic will be a priority of Ash and Parker this off season.

Judging QB's by practice is almost absurd. They know they can't get hit and the whistle blows as soon as they start to run. These are probably Gio's two greatest strengths - no fear of getting hit and knowing when to leave the pocket and run. Add his speed into the equation and playing him is a no brainer. Screwing this up one year due to inexperience is excusable. A second year stupidity.

What's frustrating about the Gio situation is, playing Lewis is by no means about helping the team win this year. Gio's college career, and RU's 2017 are being sacrificed in the hope of preparing Lewis for 2018 and beyond.

I'm one to put starting Brolin in that mix as well. Knowing Brolin is gone after this year sets the table for Lewis to start next year. When again, the best QB might not be playing because we are building for the future.

Lewis isn't as great as looked against Morgan St, and isn't as bad as he looked vs Ohio St.

Let's see what he looks like at the end of the year against Maryland, and Michigan St.

the Morgan state game meant nothing. People don't understand how horrible that team was.

Is it too late to give the Lithuanian Lightning (or whatever) a call???? :)

Whatever happened to him btw?

You expect Cam Newton when you put a true freshman behind a mediocre OL against one of the Top 5 DLs in Div. 1? That's ridiculous.

anyone see anything impressive? Not expecting much from a true frosh but...I dunno.
When you have a porous offensive line (I said from spring ball this was my biggest concern), "playmaking" receivers who disappear and can't get open (I also said it was rediculous to expect true freshman to have a significant impact), and coaching that doesn't know how to simplify a playbook to maximize the skills that the players possess (Kill hire never did anything for me - and he isn't a recruiter)

...you can't possibly make any judgement on a true freshman QB

So far one D2 offer from Robert Morris, and a Preferred Walkon from Ohio St. Other G5 and D2 schools keeping in touch as he is plan B on these schools wish list.

So far this year he has about 12 TD passes, 3 picks, 4 TD rushes, his team is ranked about 10 in Ohio, currently 5-1. He is approaching Mitch Trubinsky's TD and Passing yardage records, he is #2 on both.
He has about 60 TDs for his career there w about 20 INTs. Great student and kid too. I listen to his games via internet, might make it out for his playoffs. They were tied with the #1 team, St Ignatious midway thru the 4th qtr before losing, could meet up with them in the playoffs .
Thanks for asking and remembering.

This is true. You see special from day 1. Watched 2 QBs closely at my other school. Russell Wilson and Phillip Rivers. You knew from day 1 they were special. And, look what we did to State in our bowl game when we were getting picked apart by Wilson in the first half and crushed them in the 2nd half when we knocked Wilson out.

This was my concern a couple weeks ago - he's seems a bit slow for P5. The fact that we have nobody to block for him (or anyone else) doesn't help.

As I posted then - there's no great, savior QB on this roster. QB play will not win us any games.

I kinda miss Gary Nova.
He doesn't need to be Carl Lewis. What he needs to do is be able to extend plays. Scramble, not go down on the 1st hit, when lanes open up take them or WRs get lost down field(if they ever figure it out) throw them the ball. When he does run move the pile forward. Everyone is taking way too much away from a game involving a true freshman against one of the best defenses in the country.

Hard to scramble when 5 guys are coming at you. Give Lewis one guy to shuck and I'm confident he can do that. Bolin as a senior can't do that. Again your taking too much away from a true freshman playing a game against one of the top defenses in college football. He's a true freshman, the games moving a mile a minute for him right now. He's unsure of his decisions at this point, with time and more repetition in game situations the game will slow down. Those decisions will become 2nd nature making him appear quicker.

Believe me I've played the game by the end of the year he'll become more comfortable. My 1st game in college I was a mess, the game moved too fast and I was benched. It's fvcking nerve racking your 1st time out there. But guess what as the year went on I felt more comfortable. It became more been there done that and I got better.

I disagree. You can condescend all you want, but I'm not blind - the kid is NOT quick and he is NOT elusive. He's not a scrambler. He might be a perfectly fine rusher, but he's not a scrambler.

Jabu Lovelace part2??

God no. Lovelace went down the first time somebody touched him. Sometimes he went down before anybody touched him. At least Lewis is strong. He's not quick, but once he gets going he's a lot tougher to bring down.

Not trying to be condescending just saying many are making up their minds on what he can do in his career in one game as a true freshman playing against one of the top defenses in the country already. You've already made up your mind that he's going to be a statue back in the pocket. I think once he becomes comfortable he'll be able to move better back there. He'll know when to bail out and be able to see the rush better. That's what the good scrambler's can do get out of the pocket before it closes. He has that ability as you said he might be a fine rusher, Bolin doesn't posses that.

Will we ever have an offensive line in the 4 years Lewis is here that will support his skill set?
Johnny Unitis reincarnated would get twisted into a pretzel with the penetration we allow.
We need speed back there or forever be doomed to what your watching right now in this league
