is a highly touted basketball player. Would you want him to play at Kentucky? I would not, although I have been a life-long Cat fan who bleeds blue. It would pain me to send him elsewhere, but, as a father, I would want him to go to a top flight school where he would develop and have visibility. That's a sad commentary on the state of Kentucky basketball. No surprise that we can't attract star players.

I would want my son to come here if he was starter good and we had a coach that could develop his game. If he is UK good he should have a future playing basketball but he would need to improve no matter how good he was when he got here.
I get your point but it’s kind of unfair. Can you imagine Mark Pope stepping into a legit kid’s living room on a recruiting visit. Before I saw his schtick I had hope. After two years of seeing him in action I could see him walking in with a buzz cut and wearing a suit like a funeral director. He’d have a flower on his lapel that squirted water and a buzzer in his hand that shocked the person he shook hands with. He’d be polite as hell and say some impressive things because he’s undoubtedly a smart, good human. Basketball coach ? No way. He would be great at visiting sick kids in hospitals and immediately cheering them up but head coach of UK basketball is WAY over his skill set.

you ain’t lying. But let me be clear, if my son got a basketball scholarship offer to UK, I’m not shooting it down behind closed doors.
No matter who’s the coach of Kentucky, you better damn well believe I’d want my son or daughter playing here. This isn’t Rupp, Mark Pope, Tubby Smith or Cals Program, it’s ours, the fans. It’s a life long honor to even step on that floor as a basketball player no matter the level, to actually wear those Kentucky uniforms and all that goes into it is just a step below being the real life Superman. Well one plus to your son maybe not being a top talent….. he still has a shot to go to UK if he’s mediocre as long as Pope is here. Is he from Kentucky? If so you’re set.

One positive about playing for Kentucky under Pope, your seasons would be short and offer plenty of opportunities for other hobbies and interests.

I’d still love for my son to play for UK, even under Pope, because by the time he was worthy to play there, he would already be talented enough and fundamentally sound, that he would just ignore any goofy stuff from Pope, and do what he does.
A lot of the current players should do the exact same thing, ignore the goof on the sidelines, because what’s he going to do, reduce your minutes from 20 to 18?

This crowd is getting miserable around here. Yes, this year has sucked, but we are still UK. We are one of the two biggest draws in college bball, and that isn’t changing. Pope may not work out here, and we’ll know after next year, but UK is UK and making up stupid threads about how you don’t want your son to play here because Pope (and Cal’s last several years, maybe) has under-achieved makes us look dumber than we already do at times.
Development is largely on the player and players do more in the offseason by themselves than with the limited time they have with coaches now. People are locked into the old school mentality, times have changed, kids are different and there is no such things as an elite school anymore- kids don't care about that- not the elite ones anyway. Parity is real- Maybe if you are kid like Noah that matters, but our fans say he sucks anyway and expect 15 first round NBA picks- picks 1-15 so, lol

I would tell him if he wanted to play here, “Son, you need thick skin to play at Kentucky. When you’re good, they’ll worship the ground you walk on. When you’re bad, they’ll insult you and call you waste of a scholarship at best. If you can’t handle having everything you do viscously scrutinized, go somewhere else.”
I definitely wouldn’t demand he goes where I want him to because parents who try to mold their kids in their image suck to the highest degree.

If I wasn't a Kentucky fan there's no chance I would want my son to go there right now. It's a mess but since I am blue to the bone I would steer him that direction anyway. We need to get #hit straight.
I would always want my kid to play for UK but I sure think that other coaches would have a lot more to sell.
Not sad commentary, just a realistic concern for a son you love and want the best in life.
If my son was good enough to play college basketball. What is the chance my son would play in the NBA. About 1%. If he does go to UK for 4 years then he will be set for life living in KY. How many of you has been set for life making good money in any job and can work for anyone they want? This is a no brainer. Also I would probably get to see every KY game they play in person for 4 years. Like I said, it is a no brainer.
There are enough real things going on to complain about without making up stupid fairy tale things that aren’t going to happen.
