This is going to continue to be a thing. They got arguably the two best players in this class to do it. If it works for them I think you will see more and more guys go this route.
Sadly, I have to agree with this. I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re the two top players in the class, though. I would say two of the top 7 or 8. IMO, Boston and Clarke are both right up there with those two guys.

Hopefully these HS kids making the jump aren’t overly successful. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hoping for them to fail. I just would like to keep the elite talent in college, as opposed to the garbage G League.

Kuminga not to Duke.

Jalen Green not to Memphis.

#3 went to USC.

We have the best incoming freshman who will see the limelight.

We also have Terrence Clarke who could be better than all of em.

Edit: oh yeah and Cade is on a lame duck OSU team!!

I'm sorry but give me Clarke and Boston any day. They got spark plugs with juice. Kuminga reminds me a lot of Poythress with his mentality. He's very talented but not focused 24/7. Good Luck to him. Will I watch G league? Maybe, if they play KY
He looked plenty focused when he played (outplayed?) Clarke. It’s okay sometimes to admit players that go elsewhere are incredibly talented.

We ended up with a wealth of talent ourselves. Boston started last summer ranked in the teens and played his way up to the #3 best player entering college. Not bad at all.

It's fine.

They top-top guys can do that, won't have a huge impact on college basketball.

HOWEVER, I also think that these guys aren't going to enjoy the G-League experience and that will get around. Might influence some decisions in the future.

Kuminga and other top5 guys will likely be fine.. but it's the guys after that who might get exposed by the G-league talent and experience. That is a big leap from AAU/HS basketball.

I just wonder, how many $500k salaries can the G-league roll out before the ROI just isn't there? If the G-league is becoming a development league for the NBA, there has to be a cut off where say.. the 15th ranked recruit isnt worth the pay, and they could just evaluate that guy at some college for a year.. for free.

Get used to it. Cal will return to his days when he out recruited everybody in the pre one and days. Careful selecting will be critical

I really worry about wasting time on top10 guys, especially the elite ones. That Gleague offer could come at any time and who wouldn't take that? A team could feasibly recruit a kid for 3 years.. but because of his talent the G-league could snatch him up.. what 4 months before the season starts?

I'll miss the elite talent if it indeed goes away.. but I'll be excited to see what Cal can do with slightly lesser, but multi-year talent.

Reasonable concern but Cal does a pretty good job more often than not filling holes. This year could also prove to see how the league benefits guys rather than college. I’m sure it will help some for sure, but could it hurt a guy being in the face of scouts every day and getting exposed? I think that’s possible too. I’m not sure Skal would have done much to help himself if that option was around then and he choose it.

No surprise here.

while the GL has a couple of good players, it is yet to be seen what they actually get to do as far as competitive games are concerned. Who are they playing and what is on the line when they do so? I foresee glorified exhibitions games which are awfully controlled environments to make real judgements on. There are many NBA scouts who still don’t understand the direction of this program and feel like it is a poor evaluation tool compared to the other options.

I don’t believe this is a shoe in for what takes over college basketball. If anything, not playing this year due to Covid has more of a chance to wreck college hoops than the GL.

Finding the best college players will become more and more important. A la Tyler Herro being a much better college player than Rj Barrett, and guys like Shai/Quickley etc.

Hmmmmmm.....go to college for 7-8 months, take a bunch of classes I have no real interest in, have to attend class and do class assignments so I stay eligible......or get $500k from the G-league and possibly other monetary endorsements......easy call.

That's why college needs to level the playing field with the G-League by allowing NIL rights. I'm not sure if $500k will be available for college players, although it wouldn't surprise me in the high profile cases.

But the college experience/training is still one of the best around. Classes aren't difficult. The overall experience of a college athlete is a known quantity, the main downside currently is the restriction on athletes monetizing their NIL.

There are plenty of really good basketball players who will take the opportunity to play college. They could be the next Ja Morant.

imagine giving Khalil Whitney half a mill and then realizing he’s nowhere near that level.
You know it's going to happen. That's why the NBA went back to the age restriction/year removed from high school (one and done) rule. They got burned too many times. Some folks say the NBA has deep pockets and won't care, but any sound business mind never likes to lose money.

lol you make it sound like this a debate. nba is on pace to make 10 billion a year in revenue. and it has done this without the support of many here.

500k 5 or 10 times a year to find and cultivate the next all star or face of the NBA for a decade that will generate hundreds of billions of dollars....think bigger.

Think it’ll be a kid by kid basis. Yes they got two OF the best players in the class, but those kids we seen way before this was a thing that those kids would probably seriously consider overseas/pro options. I think it’ll be more of this last recruiting class a couple elite prospects take a risk on it, however, most attend college.

With Green and Kuminga in the pros, the top incoming Freshmen based on composite rankings are:

1. Cunningham- OK St.
2. Mobley- USC
3. Boston- UK
4. Williams- Stanford
5. Barnes- FSU
6. Clarke- UK
7. Brown- Texas
8. Cisse- Memphis
9. Suggs- Gonzaga
10. Christopher- ASU

Boston, Clarke, and Suggs are the only three playing for contenders, IMHO.

If Sarr is eligible and we have a season, it should be a fun one.

Kuminga would have looked good in blue. Too bad, but yeah, we knew it was likely. At least Duke missed on him, too.

As for Cade Cunningham:

I still prefer the option where we hired Canen a year ago over the option of taking "the high road".

Give me the super team over the ethic's banner.
