It was laughable at those comparisons . Friedgen mentored some great colllege quarterbacks and was OC of a Super Bowl team. Head coaching ? Not even close .
Kill is awful as an OC and hasn't even done it in years. But people here lauded the hire - - and he was going to teach our head coach - that we are paying - to be a head coach. Ridiculous !

Ash will learn with experience - just not sure if he can learn fast enough to be able to keep the recruits and the fanbase.

It's just a mismatched job. Ash isn't ready to take on this type of job (and few are).

What did you want Kill to do differently exactly?

The personnel isn't exactly the greatest show on turf.

Look at the formations we use. The different personnel packages. The pre-shift motion. The clustered receivers. Pistol sets. There's a lot to like here. If he had Nova/Carroo he'd be making chicken soup.

Plum Street, what's your point? Of course he's not the Fridge. But not many are his equivalent. I still think Kill's an upgrade from Drew.

This. I frustrated plum, but that was my point

No you didn't . I read these boards and know you went through a lot . I respect that . So I back off.
I don't understand why you come into the everything I post and call me names and give me a rough time . You have a hard on for me for some reason.

Kill couldn't hold Friedgen's jock strap. (Sorry everyone for the visual.)

Ok, well for the Kill critics: is he or is he not better than Boy Wonder?

I think in time with better talent Kill could get a "functional" offense going but I don't know that it'll ever be exciting or fast pace if that's what you want. Honestly, wonder if Ash got shell shocked from last year and DM's implementation of that kind of offense.

No I don't. Maybe we need to get to know each other better. And lets not over state my having it rough. 90% of my life has been awesome. Like anyone else, I had some setbacks and scares. My philosophy is to never throw in the towel and give up. That said, I am a bit frustrated with the qb and rb choices.
I really wasnt busting you. My point was every one is different. And Fridge was in his own league. Not many like him.

Very good. And like anyone else we both want the best for this program and school .
I just don't feel this guy is the one to do that for us . Maybe you do. It's all small potatoes arguing about football in the realm of real life

Kill is such a drastic upgrade over drew its day and night. We just don't have the depth or talent at all. Nova as much as we hated him is good for at least 1 or 2 more wins versus Bolin alone. And if we had carroo forget it we have at minimum 2 more wins. The skill players on offense are horrible.

OL is improved marginally, DL is massively improved but gassed every game from lack of depth.

Blame Flood, they were posters that think recruiting isn't 50% of the game. Kill offensive game is a running game and the Big Ten has changed since he was HC.

This season was fully expected. Maybe with 2 recruiting classes we see if Ash can turn it around but Ash is around for at least 3-4 seasons.

I'm fine with Kill, not so fine with Bolin. My guess is Bolin is Ash's pick.

I knew some of that which is why I wasn't so excited about the hire but was always open to it. He did put out a top offense maybe even number 1 overall in one of his years at NIU. I believe he was calling plays then too and most likely was up until he took over at Minnesota. So that gives me some hope that eventually with improved talent he could open up a little more but I still wouldn't expect fireworks on offense.

yes, I hope so to. He's certainly a big improvement over Drew....and have seen some good signs of things opening up.. but Bolin isn't helping fer sure. But my point of the stats is let's not expect to get too excited by what we think he will bring vs. what his history is.

Mostly concerned about the QB and RB personnel decisions.

Kill isn't an offensive coordinator. He hasn't been an offensive coordinator in over 20 years. I don't know why people thought we were getting Chip Kelly.

I don't think anyone expected Jerry Kill to be some amazing genius calling plays but at the very least he'd be a level head with two decades of coaching experience, and would at least take the pieces he has and find a way to get them to perform to their best unlike Mehringer who was Mr. Square Peg into a Round Circle frustration wondering why a 165lb QB couldn't break tackles running between the tackles.

If you look at his wiki that's what you see and what I thought at first too when he was hired but if you read articles about him I've read he was calling plays as the HC during his stint at NIU. I'd guess he was likely doing the same prior. He did give up those duties when he stepped up to the P5 at Minnesota.

You know Oregon's new HC Willie Taggart calls plays there too. He did at USF as well. He's got two co-OCs in Mario Cristobal (Alabama) and Marcus Arroyo (Ok. St) and they help in the game planning but on game day Taggart is the one making the calls.

So yea wiki helps in giving job titles and past career stops and usually you can interpret that pretty straight forward but that's not always the case.

If anyone looked at Friedgens offense stats as compared to the year prior, they wouldnt praise friedgen so much. His resume is great but i think the hype is more based on the resume than what he actually did here.

25.8 ppg under friedgen.

25.6 ppg the year prior.

Its the jimmys and joes

I don't think you can be that simplistic there to compare.

2013 we were playing in the American with SOS of 83rd and finished the season losing to ND going 2-6 last 8 games.

2014 we were playing year 1 in the Big 10 East with SOS of 43n and crushed UNC in Detroit going 4-4 final 8 games.

Nova's QB rating jumped from 120 to 140 something and his TD to Int went from like 18-14 to 22-12 (or something like that). Yeah Nova was a senior but what Fridge did with him was significant.

Kill has been a disappointment. His ball control wait for the other team to make a mistake instead of aggressive play offense is tough to watch.

Outside of our MLAX program our sports have some aversion to scoring points.

I literally squeeze my cheeks together whenever I see Bolin release the ball.

Seems like a fantastic kid but he's got a rag arm.

You can't compare 2013 to 2014. Schedule was much different because we changed leagues .
